PINETOWN - A driver with a camera attached to the dashboard of his vehicle, has captured a horror crash that has claimed 22 lives in a single hit.
Earlier reports of 27 or more dead are incorrect. Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the initial figure of 27 dead had decreased to 22. He said 19 people died on scene and three died in hospital
An additional estimated 32 people sustained various injuries, said paramedics. The accident happened at about 9pm on Thursday.
The video that shows the moments before a runaway truck hurtles down the M13, across a major intersection, through a red traffic light and wipes out four fully laden taxis and the occupants of VW Jetta.
Chris Botha, spokesperson for Netcare911, told eNCA on Thursday that those who witnessed the incident had helped paramedics triage patients. He said the scene was of utter carnage.
The driver would face charges of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.
