Machan, I don't know about Karate or any martial art for that matter. However I read on this online thread that most of these so called martial arts fail miserably in real world. The reason given is that most of these artists practice and teach karate, kung fu or whatever din don bo for pure showmanship. If you really want to learn defend yourself you should attend a self defense class or a MMA class (it too is an art but many had argued it being superior to other common M-arts in real world)

Please note this is something I read online

what you read online is, pardon me mate, total bullshit. You learn martial arts not to fight. It's an art. It helps you improve confidence, stay healthy, and stay active. When essential you may put that into use, but such occasions are rare.
MMA is total waste of time if you consider them because it's something for those who want to fight, and fight like dogs. So I call it dog fight.
The reality is: if Karate and Kung Fu fail, ao does MMA, and that too long before the former two.
If we talk about the real world then a gun would outplay all of them. Then that being the case, your choice should be the other uses such as I mentioned above. And there MMA fails mate.
Back alley dog fights are not considered an art, and for that a gun would be better.
By learning the real martial arts like Karate and Kung Fu a person becomes healthy, noble, and civilized. It improves all faculties of a human.MMA doea the opposite. Never market the popular American rivalry against the age old traditional character building arts.

Yes the ones you have mentioned are arts. They teach you to master yourself, be more vigilant and stay strong. But the problem is performing those moves when some crazy bloke jumps at you. Honestly, I think fighting like a "dog", cheating will help you block an attack and deliver a proper kick/punch to the sack than going Haiyaaaaaa..aaaa.

Carrying a gun or knife, dude I was talking about real world scenarios. Not Hollywood or American ghettos Plus read again I was recommending Self-Defense class, you know... to DEFEND yourself, not fly like nyancat

I sense that you value these martial arts and I respect that. But I am inclined to agree with the opinion on the thread which I mentioned above.

Bro I agree with everything you say and Karate is one of the best martial arts to learn, strong and never gets old works everytime anywhere. Its good if you not only learn the proper karate but also the discipline n philosopy behind it. I think very few in sri lanka really do that. Its the same with Kung fu, judo or aikido or ninjitsu etc.

But I dont agree about one thing you say about MMA. MMA is a sport made of wrestling, karate, judo, kung fu, muay thai, wrestling, boxing, japanese ju jitsu, brazilian ju jitsu, capoiera, aikido, wushu and any other martial art that enables you to fight. Its not a dog fight really. if you know the characters like anderson silva and lyoto machida out of the ring you will know. They have studied one or two martial arts and moved on to the next level of Mixed Martial Arts. Its the next level of fighting really. I think training MMA first is not a good idea just like u say. Its only good if you already have a sense of what a real martial art is after studying something for a while.

What if all the thugs n criminals instead of the fitness they had used in the streets had a ring to fight in with descipline ? Thats MMA. and MMA is not american, do you know who the father of MMA is ? Shifu Bruce Lee.

I think you should do some studying about MMA other than what you see in a bout, the origins and history specially.
personally speaking this is only my opinion from experience. My father is a Blackbelt in kyokushin karate, did some boxing before. Myself and my brother studied Kung-fu with Jeet kundo for 2 years. I currently live in Dubai training MMA. my brother also trains aikido n mma in srilanka.

It looks like we are at a deadlock at the grading of MMA. Be as it may, I strongly object to the idea that MMA is the next level. In reality, it's the absence of a level. It's very rare a person masters a single art properly, and the idea of success through a salad is surprising. I learned Kyokushin under Sensei Palitha Galappatthi (and Shihan Nanda Siriwardena) before moving to Shotokan in which I achieved 2nd dan black belt. I hail from Gampola, fyi. There were many sellers of martial arts and even Bruce Lee was sold. (One such seller was a popular actor, you will be able to guess.) In reality the chances you save yourself with MMA is only a fairy tale mate, whoever has mastered a real art like Karate and Kung Fu would do better. It's not mere iyaahoooo... it's about handling a situation the best way. I do not agree that MMA serves better, for if you cannot master a single art completely, you cannot expect a "next level" which includes many. Instead may I say that you get stranded in the middle of nowhere.
Anyway, nice having a decent discussion with you gentlemen rather than another slum fight with filthy words :)

Well said brother ! yeah and i agree to ur statement about not being able to master Karate and Kung-fu. To master them it may require a whole lifetime. I believe MMA to be a sport and earn livelihood from their skills. I also like the idea of being a fighter who can wrestle like a wrestler, a submission artist by knowledge of ju jitsu, spar like a boxer n muay thai fighter n other skills like judo, karate. in other words on the mat in the ground game, sparring on the feet grappling, kicks and all. not totally perfect in all aspects but improving daily. maybe we have different views and ideas but we agree on one thing and thats the traditional karate, kung fu from the creators is the best form !
