(CNN) -- Conditions at the launching site are good and preparations are moving smoothly. And if all goes according to plan, China will launch its first lunar probe at 1:30 a.m. Monday (12:30 p.m. ET Sunday), state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The feat will be a significant one. It will make China the third nation -- after the United States and the Soviet Union -- to soft-land on the moon.
And it will come just over a decade after the country first sent an astronaut into space.
The Chang'e-3 probe -- which will blast off from a Long March 3B rocket in Sichuan province located in southwest China -- is expected to land on the moon's surface in mid-December, a spokesman for the China's State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence told Xinhua.
