We also went through the "Free" education in Sri Lanka.
But, when seeing retrospectively, we had the following observation.

    * Sri Lanka is giving free Primary, Secondary and tertiary education. Countries like India give only Primary education as "Free". Most western/ "developped" countries do not have a free education system.

    * Sri lanka is having a very very low percentage of graduates (with a bachelor degree). But, the countries with out "Free" education, have a very high (compared to Sri lanka) percentage of population of graduates.

    * The above contrast get very much worse if we compare percentage population with a post graduate (PhD).

    * We have seen, even the kids get gastritis even at the age of year 5.

    * In our previous generation, we observed illnesses like heart attacks only when they get old. (like above 50). But now we observe, a significantly large population getting illnesses like heart attacks in early 20's of age.
(i.e. They may be educated than their previous generation. But they die soon. LOL)

    * Sri lanka is exporting unskilled labor, which causes many social issues.

I have seen the following model in some countries.
They give the basic education "Free of charge" and it's compulsory.
They do have free tertiary education up to a certain degree.
But, there is a significant opportunity to get the free education through private/ paid universities. There's a very good private sector + public sector collaboration and they do collaborate well with the banking sector. The banks freely give loans for tertiary education, so that even a poor person (who didn't get selected to the state sector university through the competitive exam) can get the tertiary education by getting a loan which can be settled in few years while doing his job. By this model they have achieved a very high percentage of graduates than we do. Even if they export labor, it's skilled labor, so that they earn more and they send more $ to their mother country.

Education in Sri Lanka seems to be very stressful to the kids. They develop gastritis even at the year 5 exam. They do not do sports. They are not healthy and ultimately many people from work force may be dying at young age by heart attacks etc due to lack of exercise etc. They have not done sports etc at school. They have no training of team work. They know only about competing. This has a very bad effect (bad attitudes like selfish) when they start working.
What I see as the solution, is minimization of the stress/ competition at the very young age and promoting group activities like sports. The education does not mean cramming books and vomiting them at the exam.
But, this cannot be achieved unless we increase the opportunities for tertiary education. It would be nice to minimize competition before the A/L. (i.e. Scholarship, O/L)

Ya ban i don't think the new generation have much life expectancy as the previous generations...apart from the beautiful nature and climate i don't think there's anything other thing in sri lanka to be happy about...I was born in 1988 and we did play outside till at least o/ls..there were no facebook and such....but i don't see any kid playing anything now a days...education is shit it's nothing but by heart....who can by heart the most wins...apart from it look at the mental stress in sri lanka, everything is corrupted, people running a rat race and we eat shit everyday....because of this education most teens starting lifes at the age of 25...Some graduate even late...in other countries you have your own kids going to school at that age...This o/l and a/l mentality should be eliminated...i have seen some top companies now recruiting people are who not interest in studies it's a great thing....It's good that the education is free but the duration and stress should be reduced...It will be a miracle if we can live up to the age of 60 at least at this pace of stress now a days....

Nothing wrong with the current education system. But major attitude change has to be made in campuses. In order to do that, politics in campuses should be completely eliminated, specially the jvp nut jobs. Nurtured by the free education, every student's ultimate goal seem to be working abroad with PR in mind and never look back.

yes. I personally have seen a significant number of young males getting heart attacks in their 2nd and 3rd decade of life. We have never seen this disease pattern in our previous generation.
i.e. WE ARE CREATING A SICK POPULATION.
Kids are getting these non communicable diseases (NCDs) because they lack exercises.
Basically because they don't have a time to do sports.

At year 5 scholarship and O/L, inappropriately we have created a competition.
A competition is needed when there are limited resources, so that only the winner gets that.

The limited resource in Sri Lanka is the opportunity for tertiary education

I have seen people with simple passes in A/L, going abroad and becoming doctors and engineers. To my knowledge, they practice reasonably well after graduation.
So, that means, even a student who has got only simple passes for A/L in Sri Lanka have had a reasonably good education and we can make a reasonably ok graduate out of him/ her.
So, then we have to know the limiting factor is the opportunity for tertiary education.

If you get through A/L with flying colours, you get the opportunity for free tertiaty education.
Although you dont pass A/L, but if your parents are very rich, still you can go abraod and can become a doctor.

But, even though you get through your A/L reasonably, but if your parents are not rich enough, you cant become a graduate.

i'm not saying that we should stop graduates coming ton the country.
    They should be welcomed.
But we should make tertiary education available/ feasible for the people with a middle level income.
We can promote private banks to give loans for tertiary education.
Through public-private partnership/ collaboration, that loan interest should be kept to an affordable level.
Tertiary education through private sector local universities should be promoted.
So, that we dont have to export un-skilled labor.
We can promote, educational tourism, and through that income, we can promote local graduates tertiary education.
Just a model, drawn in my mind.
Please consider, this is not a political discussion.
I just wanted to tell this to some audience.

Thanks for the comment/ support bro.
Ape avun life eka patan ganne 30y withara.
When they finish education/ find a job, it's about 30y of age.
They plan to have kids by about 35y.
But by then they are sub fertile.
In other countries, they become graduates at a much less age.
    :(
