HIV IN SRILANKA (MC , CINEMA THEATERS .....) >> Dear Friends, >> >> Kindly take a couple of minutes to go thru this mail. If useful may advise others also. Please pass this on to others this happened in Colombo recently and may happen elsewhere also. Few weeks ago, in Majestic City (MC) film hall, a person felt something poking from her seat. When she got up to see what it was, she found a needle sticking out of the seat with a note attached saying "You have just been infected by HIV".. The Disease Control Center (in Colombo ) reports many similar events in many other cities recently. All tested needles were HIV Positive... >> The Center also reports that needles have been found in cash dispensers at public banking machines. We ask everyone to use extreme caution when faced with this kind of situation. >> All public chairs/seats should be inspected with vigilance and caution before use. >> A careful visual inspection should be enough. In addition, they ask that each of you pass this message along to all members of your family and your friends of the potential danger. Recently, one doctor has narrated a somewhat similar instance that happened to one of his patients at the Contrast Cinema in Dalugama. >> A young girl engaged and about to be married in a couple of months, was pricked while the movie was going on. The tag with the needle had the message “Welcome to the World of HIV family". Though the doctors told her family that it takes about 6 months before the virus grows strong enough to start damaging the system and a healthy victim could survive about 5-6 years, the girl died in 4 months, perhaps more because of the "Shock thought". We all have to be careful at public places, rest God help! Just think about saving a life by forwarding this message. HIV e-mail warnings create fear psychosis

    By Shezna Shums

A series of e-mails warning people to the effect that needles that have been previously used on HIV positive persons are being used at cinema halls by perverse people are presently being circulated, creating a fear psychosis.

The said e-mails name popular cinemas, quotes a director of a national research institute and refers to a number of instances of innocent filmgoers being infected due to this practice.

However, doctors from the National STD / AIDS Control Programme and Health Services Department claim these electronic mails are circulated only to create a fear psychosis among the people.

"Such e-mails are being circulated abroad as well," said a doctor attached to the National STD/AIDS Control Programme.

He stressed not even one such true incident, where a used needle has been put in a public place with the intention of possibly passing the infection to an innocent person, has been reported so far to the unit.

The e-mail, which was also received by The Sunday Leader, was sent out by a person named Kithsiri Nandasena, AIS, director, Medical and Research Institute (MRI). Upon inquiry, it transpired there was no such person by that name attached to the MRI.

The mail also quoted an instance when "a few weeks ago in a popular cinema hall in Wellawatte, a person felt something pricking while she was seated. When she got up, she found a needle with a note attached to it saying, 'you have just been infected by HIV.'"

The letter cautions people to exercise maximum vigilance when using public chairs and claims the Disease Control Centre in Colombo has recorded instances of finding used needles in cash dispensers and ATM machines.

The e-mail even cited a similar example at a popular cinema in Dalugama. According to the contents, a young girl who was about to get married was pricked by a needle while watching a movie. A tag was attached to the needle that read, 'Welcome to the world of the HIV family.' The mail claims the girl had an unfortunate death, however, medical institutions deny that such an incident occurred.

Example:(Submitted 2003) Subject: Read This - Red Cross Blood Service - could save a life From: Red Cross Blood Service

A few weeks ago in a movie theatre in Melbourne a person sat on something that was poking out of one of the seats. When she got up to see what it was she found a needle sticking out of the seat with a note attached saying "You have just been infected by HIV".

The Disease Control Centre in Melbourne reports many similar incidents have occurred in many other Australian cities recently. All tested needles are HIV Positive.

The Centre also reports that needles have been found in the cash dispensers in ATMs. We ask everyone to use extreme caution when faced with this kind of situation. All public chairs / seats should be inspected with vigilance and caution before use.

Seventeen people have tested positive in the Western suburbs alone in the last 2 months!!! A careful visual inspection should be enough. In addition they ask that each of you pass this message along to all members of your family and your friends of the potential danger. We all have to be careful at public places! This is very important.

Just think about saving a life of someone even you don't know by forwarding this message. Please, take a few seconds of your time to pass it along.
