    This is about basic theory behind the turbocharge technology.

    What is turbocharger?

    • A turbocharger is a forced induction device used to allow more power to be produced for an engine of a given size.
    •A turbocharged engine can be more powerful and efficient than a normal engine because the turbine forces more air, and proportionately more fuel, into the combustion chamber than atmospheric pressure alone.

    • More fuel and air at a higher pressure can produce more horsepower within an engine
    •A naturally aspirated engine can only burn as much fuel as it has air to mix with
    •Mechanical aspiration increases the density of the air in the induction manifold so that more fuel can be added
    •Mechanical aspiration increases the pressure in the combustion chamber to increase power


    How Turbochargers Work

    •First, air passes before entering the compressor
    •The air is then compressed which raises the air’s density (mass / unit volume)
    •Many turbocharged engines have a intercooler, that cools the compressed air to further increase its density
    •Then air enters the engine’s cylinders, which contain a fixed volume
    •After the fuel is burned in the cylinder it is exhausted during the cylinder’s exhaust stroke in to the exhaust manifold
    •The high temperature gas then continues on to the turbine.
    •A pressure and temperature drop occurs across the turbine

    •The compression of air by the turbocharger creates a temperature rise in the induction air which could result in detonation.
    •An intercooler cools the induction air after compression.
    •From that it can further increase the air density according to the real gas equation PV=nRT
    •When intercooler decrease the temperature(T) of air the volume(V) also should be decrease
    •So that we can inject more air into the engine’s cylinders and it helps to good combustion


    Turbocharging versus supercharging

    • In contrast to turbochargers, superchargers are not powered by exhaust gases but driven by the engine mechanically
    •Belts, chains, shafts, and gears are common methods of powering a supercharger.
    •A supercharger places a mechanical load on the engine to drive.
    •A turbocharger does not place a direct mechanical load on the engine.
    •It is more efficient because it uses potential and kinetic energy of the exhaust gas to drive the compressor.
