Unemployment, insecurities of private job and migration hassles are some of the issues that are making professional degree holders to take up a sweeper's job.

Around 17,000 youth have applied for 114 posts of sweepers in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district. While there is no educational qualifications required for the posts, surprisingly MBAs, B Techs, BSc are ready to work as a sweeper at a salary of Rs 17,000 per month.

The Uttar Pradesh government has put the selection process on hold after sweeper’s organisation demanded that “safai karmachari” post be reserved only for the Valmiki community.

A similar case has happened recently in the Bhatinda district where 8,500 applications were received for 19 posts of class IV. The applicants were MBA, MCA degree holder.

The Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) in a statement yesterday said it was deeply concerned about Sri Lanka’s intended bilateral agreement with India named “Economic Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA).”
“OPA with 46 Associations of professionals of the country, having substantial professional resources in the country in any discipline, is of firm opinion that it is absolutely unnecessary for foreign professional services to be allowed liberally in the country by such a bilateral agreement with any country,” the statement said.

“Such an agreement to bring foreign professional services to the country can be detrimental to the local professional resource base.”
Any organisation requiring to hire foreign professional expertise for a particular job function may be allowed on request on acceptable reasons for which no such bilateral country agreement is warranted, OPA President Prof. Rohana Kuruppu said.
