SriLankan Airlines looking to sub-lease Airbus A350s
ECONOMYNEXT - State-run SriLankan Airlines is in talks to sub-lease three Airbus A350 aircraft it is has to take delivery this year, Chief Executive Suren Ratwatte said.
Sri Lankan has ordered up to eight A350s with three due in 2016, one in 2017 and another four from 2020 onwards.
But SriLankan has not been able to make profits on long-haul European routes the aircraft was deployed and a new administration has asked it to focus on regional traffic to cut losses.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament that SriLankan may have to cancel the A350 orders and pay penalties.
The A350s due this year is leased from AerCap.
Ratwatte declined to confirm reports that the carrier is in talks with Turkish Airlines to sub-lease the A350s.
Trukish is a remarkable airline, which made losses under state-control which became one of the fastest growing and profitable carriers in the world after it was listed on the Turkish Stock Exchange and state-control was reduced.
SriLankan which was profitable when it was privatized and was managed by Emirates, became a loss-making carrier after ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa cancelled the visa of the expatriate chief executive and Middle Eastern carriers sold its stake and existed.

Bad news early morning guys
A Srilankan Airlines Airbus A330-200, registration 4R-ALJ performing flight UL-891 from Bangkok (Thailand) to Colombo (Sri Lanka), was in the initial climb out of Bangkok's runway 19L when the crew stopped the climb at 4000 feet reporting smoke in the cabin. The aircraft returned to Bangkok for a safe landing on runway 19R about 11 minutes after departure.
A passenger reported there was smoke in the aft cabin.
A smoke filled SriLankan Airlines flight bound for Colombo from Bangkok declared an emergency soon after taking off last night and returned to Suvarnabhumi airport with passengers and crew on board.

Many passengers photographed were seen loitering on the tarmac unattended soon after Captain Upali Amerasinghe instructed them to disembark the upon the aircraft ramp steps being positioned.
Passengers were seen photographed covering their noises and mouths still suffering from smoke inhalation even after disembarking the aircraft.
In a recorded video captured by a passenger Capt. Amerasinghe appears to be more traumatized than the passengers himself. He is heard announcing “there is nothing to worry about, so please use caution when getting down from the ladder”.
A passenger on the flight Dallas Kelaart speaking to Colombo Telegraph from Bangkok asked ” Which ladder was the captain asking us to disembark from? ”
“There was absolute chaos and the ground staff in Bangkok did not have the situation under control. I in fact have refused to fly back on the same aircraft. The ground staff is pushing us to somehow travel on the same plane now saying there is no other choice as the flights from Bangkok to Colombo are all full. This situation has brought bad publicity to the airline, as most passengers taking pictures and videoing the incident handled unprofessionally have already posted these on social media” Kelaart said.
Passenger Kelaart including another 15 passengers have categorically refused to fly back on the same aircraft after it was cleared to operate, stating the flight to be unsafe to travel.
SriLankan Airlines was recently ordered to provide explanation by the International Civil Aviation Organization for alleged safety violations pertaining to flights operated to Seychelles.
It was reported that SriLanka risks been blacklisted by ICAO if proved to be guilty for safety violations.
Whilst publishing this story the aircraft still remains on ground in Bangkok.
This is fucking true. I was working that night.
Cathay was on 4 miles final when the power failure occurred, and the backup generators didn't kick in. One of my friends was at the control position, asked cathay to go around. ultimately they diverted to some other airport. there were several other aircraft started up, this sri lankan flight.. think it was 306 or something said they can depart on their own discretion so we allowed them to go. Others were asked to go back to parking bays.
what the actual fuck.
safety of all the passengers in jeopardy. if it was another airline then would have sacked both pilots on arrival.
I'm not a flyer and has absolutely no knowledge on flying..what the actual fuck.
but the crew sounded fairly confident that they can take off.
once you line up the aircraft and lock it on the runway heading i think they can take off without drifting off the runway. and the aircraft has some lights at the front so they can see a fair distance ahead.
but for landing of course there's no excuse. you absolutely positively need to be able to see the runway edge lights for our CAT I approach system
since this was a departure, we were under the impression that if the crew is confident they can take off.

i did some reading and couldn't find many incidents of these sorts. looks like its not that big of a deal, although it sounds terrifying to hear such a thing. and yes, landings is a definite no.
could the runway lights intensity controlled by the pilots from inside the cockpit?
No. we control the intensity from tower
BTW, this article on colombo telegraph, like most other articles on the site, is heavily bloated.
the incident of an aircraft landing while a military fighter jet was on runway took place during Chandrika's era. the pilot in question was Chandrika's official pilot. that's how he got away.
