Bale: No England player would get in our team

Gareth Bale has stoked the fires between Wales and England further ahead of their Euro 2016 clash on Thursday by suggesting none of the Three Lions squad would get into Chris Coleman's team. The Real Madrid star has made headlines this week after claiming that his side have more passion and pride than their English counterparts.

His comments brought a response from England boss Roy Hodgson and midfielder Jack Wilshere, but Bale insisted he was happy with his comments. And, when asked how many of Wales' opponents are good enough to play for Coleman's side, the 26-year-old replied: "None."

Hodgson had earlier branded Bale "disrespectful", while Wilshere stated that England have a better squad than Wales. But Bale offered his own riposte, talking up his team's chances going into their crucial Group B meeting.

"In the press conference, someone said I disrespected England - that wasn't the case," he said. "They're entitled to their opinion. I really don't care what they say, to be honest.

"If they feel they have the better squad, good for them. We know we have a good team, and we know we can beat them on our day."Bale also moved to clarify his remarks regarding England's supposed inferior passion.

"I'm not saying England don't have passion - I'm sure they do," he added."For me, I just feel with the rugby, the football, whatever sport it is, in Wales, we seem to have that next level and you really feel it on the pitch."

Austria 0-2 Hungary: Dark horses stunned in Bordeaux

Hungary pulled off a shock upset in their opening game at Euro 2016, as they defeated 10-man Austria 2-0 in Bordeaux.

Austria came into Tuesday's meeting in Bordeaux as the favourites to get their campaign off to a triumphant start, having cruised through qualifying in style, dropping just two points from their 10 fixtures.

But Hungary, who scraped into the play-offs before defeating Norway, had other ideas and after being on the back foot for much of the first half, took the lead just after the hour through Adam Szalai's prodded finish.

And things went from bad to worse for Marcel Koller's men four minutes later when defender Aleksandar Dragovic was - perhaps harshly - shown a second yellow card.

Hungary, making their first appearance at a major international tournament in 30 years, clinched victory on the counter three minutes from time through substitute Zoltan Stieber to get off to the ideal start in a group also containing Portugal and Iceland.

Austria, meanwhile, were left to rue not making their first-half dominance count with talisman David Alaba having come closest for them when he struck the woodwork inside the first minute.Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly made history as, at 40 years of age, he became the oldest player to feature at a European Championship match.

But it was almost a nightmare start for the veteran, who breathed a sigh of relief when Alaba's rasping shot from distance inside the opening 35 seconds struck the right-hand post. And the Bayern Munich star went close again in the 10th minute, firing straight at Kiraly from Marko Arnautovic's clever pass.

Austria continued to look the more likely to break the deadlock and Kiraly was called into action once again in the 35th minute as he dived to his left to parry Zlatko Junuzovic's effort following Marc Janko's knockdown.

A lightning break involving Arnautovic and Martin Harnik scythed through the Hungary backline, but the move was not given the finish it deserved as the latter got his feet in a tangle sliding in at the back post.Hungary captain Balazs Dzsudzsak then wasted the chance to punish that profligacy just before half-time when he dragged a shot wide from inside the box.

Dzsudzsak was much more threatening from 30 yards after the restart, sending a left-foot rocket towards the top corner that Robert Almer had to palm behind. But in the 62nd minute, Hungary made the breakthrough as Szalai twice exchanged passes with Laszlo Kleinheisler and stretched to poke beyond Almer for his first goal for club or country since 2014.

And Austria's plight worsened soon afterwards when Dragovic caught Tamas Kadar in trying to reach the ball inside the Hungary area and referee Clement Turpin brandished a second yellow card.

Krisztian Nemeth almost put the game beyond Austria when Almer superbly tipped his effort around the post, before Marcel Sabitzer wasted a golden chance to equalise when he blazed over at the other end.

As time ticked away and Austria pressed hard for a leveller, they left themselves open at the back and Tamas Priskin freed his fellow replacement Stieber, who lifted a composed finish over Almer to spark wild scenes of celebration among Hungary supporters.

'F**k off Russia' - England and Wales fans unite against hooligans

England and Wales fans have been filmed forming a boozy truce to ridicule aggressive Russian supporters in Lille ahead of their Euro 2016 clash on Thursday.

There was a simmering violence in the northern French city of Lille on Tuesday. It represented a continuation of the bloody brawling between English, Russian and French hooligans in Marseille at the weekend, leading to arrests and injuries across the city.

Russia have been threatened with disqualification by Uefa should further violence occur in the rest of the tournament.

But tensions between the two supports were once more evident, with England and Wales fans teaming up to sing "we're England and Wales, f**k off Russia" outside a bar.

Russia face Slovakia at 2pm UK time in Lille on Wednesday, then 24 hours later England and Wales clash in the nearby city of Lens.

Portugal 1-1 Iceland: Bjarnason goal frustrates Ronaldo & Co.

    cYGqxBF.jpg

Birkir Bjarnason wrote his name into the history books as Iceland belied their underdog status to earn a 1-1 draw with Portugal at Euro 2016 on Tuesday.

Iceland were making their first appearance at a major tournament and the situation appeared bleak when Nani scored the 600th goal in European Championship history to put Portugal into a deserved half-time lead.

However, poor marking cost Fernando Santos' men early in the second half when Bjarnason had plenty of time to pick his spot and volley home Johann Gudmundsson's cross.

Nani had already been denied by a fine stop from Hannes Halldorsson, while the usually prolific Cristiano Ronaldo - who tied Luis Figo's record of 127 Portugal appearances - endured a scrappy outing in his attempt to become the first player to score in four separate European Championships.

After Austria - Portugal's expected rivals for top spot in Group F - lost 2-0 to Hungary, Ronaldo cut an increasingly frustrated figure as the final set of opening pool games provided a day of surprises, despite the favourites having 26 shots to Iceland's four.

All the teams at Euro 2016 have now played, and Santos must rally his troops for Saturday's contest against Austria, while Iceland and their raucous support can take confidence into their showdown with Hungary.

Iceland almost made a great start when Portugal were caught out down the left and Gylfi Sigurdsson cut inside before forcing Rui Patricio into action with a shot towards the near post.

Portugal were soon in the ascendancy, though, and Ronaldo showed quick feet on the left to hold up a pin-point cross for Nani, whose point-blank header was brilliantly saved by Halldorsson.

Ronaldo then had a couple of chances of his own, first heading over from Vieirinha's cross before failing to make clean contact in the area from Pepe's excellent ball over the top.But the pressure told in the 31st minute. Vieirinha's throughball found Andre Gomes in the right channel and he squared for Nani to add the simple side-foot finish from six yards.

Ronaldo dragged a long-distance volley wide of the right-hand post as the second half continued in a similar manner, but Iceland hit back in the 51st minute.Gudmundsson made progress down the right before checking back and launching a deep cross to the back post where Bjarnason had escaped Vieirinha's attentions to volley in unmarked.

It was a wake-up call for Portugal who upped the tempo and Ronaldo laced one straight at Halldorsson before Nani was desperately unlucky with a flicked header that went wide of the left post from Raphael Guerreiro's delivery.

Ronaldo uncharacteristically headed straight at Halldorsson before the stage was set with a pair of late free-kicks, but the captain's trademark technique let him down as the Icelandic wall stood firm to preserve a precious and poignant point.

Renato Sanches breaks Ronaldo record as Portugal's youngest tournament player

Portugal's starlet Renato Sanches has beaten the record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo as the youngest player ever to appear for the nation in a major tournament. At 18 years and 301 days, Sanches broke the mark that Ronaldo had set at Euro 2004 as his nation spluttered to a 1-1 draw with Iceland.

The Real Madrid star was 19 years and 128 days old on his tournament debut, which he marked with a goal during a 2-1 defeat to Greece.

The Benfica teenager will be moving to Bayern Munich at the end of Euro 2016, after agreeing a deal worth €35 million to sign for the Bavarians.
And there is no doubt he has a sparkling future, even if he had little time to make an impact on Tuesday.

Sanches came on to replace Joao Moutinho after 71 minutes of Portugal's draw, and showed some signs of the promise that convinced Bayern to break the bank for his signature.

Now he will have his sights set on breaking the scoring record his captain set in that debut 12 years ago.

Santos defends Ronaldo reaction after Iceland draw

Portugal coach Fernando Santos rubbished suggestions Cristiano Ronaldo refused to shake hands with Iceland players after his side's disappointing 1-1 draw at Euro 2016.

The Real Madrid star was left unhappy after struggling to make an impact, including failing to convert two late free-kicks, as his team were held in Saint-Etienne on Tuesday.

Asked about Ronaldo's post-match reaction, Santos played down reports the 31-year-old had failed to acknowledge the opposition.

"I didn't see that at all. I was watching the players," he told a news conference.
"He greeted the Portuguese crowd – that was amazing. We wanted to give our crowd a win, they supported all through the match."That's not what I saw. I don't think that's true at all."

Nani had given Portugal a 31st-minute lead, but Birkir Bjarnason levelled for Iceland early in the second half as they earned a point in the Group F clash.Santos rued his side's missed chances and said there was no chance of underestimating Iceland, who are at their first major tournament.

"We should have scored more goals – there's no secret about that. We weren't surprised by Iceland because we were familiar with their team," he said.Santos added: "We started off OK in the second half then there was this move. We knew they could do this, start playing long balls to full-backs who crossed well.

"Iceland played a pragmatic type of game. We fought back well after the goal, we were shaken a bit but fought well and had chances to win."In the end Iceland had another dangerous shot, in between we had three or four chances. We are to blame for not scoring.

"Final 10 minutes we were anxious and should have been more patient and tried to score with cooler heads, be more patient in selecting opportunities."We're disappointed not to win the match. We believe we can go through. Our aim is to win on Saturday [against Austria]."

Ronaldo is a 'sore loser' who 'fannies about' says Iceland hero Arnason

Iceland hero Kari Arnason hit back at “sore loser” Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugal captain complained that their Group F opponents had a “small mentality” following their 1-1 draw at Euro 2016.

Ronaldo said Iceland celebrated as if they had won the European Championship after the final whistle and declared that as the reason why the outsiders will “do nothing” in France this summer.

Arnason, who along with Ragnar Sigurdsson marked Ronaldo out of the game in Saint-Etienne, instead declared Iceland were unlucky not to win the game and criticised the forward for his reaction.

“He’s just a sore loser,” Arnason said. “He didn’t want to lose the game. What does he expect - for us to play like Barcelona against him? He fannies about and dives around.“Obviously we were the underdog, we played like the underdog and we were unlucky not to win the game.”

Arnason also stated that the Iceland coach Lars Lagerback provided no specific blueprint to deal with Ronaldo other than to watch him closely. “We didn’t pay any extra attention to him,” he said. “Obviously everyone knows how good he is so you have to know where he is at every given moment but there was nothing in our game plan to specifically close him down.“We just knew we had to be close to him at every given moment and it worked perfectly.”

Iceland went behind to a Nani strike in the first half but struck back after the break through Birkir Bjarnason. The Basel midfielder secured a point on Iceland’s tournament debut in a moment that few connected with the small island nation will ever forget.“It’s amazing,” said Arnason. “I mean we knew we could do it. I think we were a bit unlucky not to steal the win at the end with [Alfred] Finnbogason’s chance.

“The second half played into our hands. We didn’t have the ball much, obviously, but we were solid and we can always catch people on the counter. There’s not many people who want to play against our forwards in the form they were in today.”

Chile 4-2 Panama: Vargas, Sanchez book quarterfinal spot

    chile-cropped_1ncsjo64mz2f51sbye4gdi3wky.jpg

Defending champion Chile is through to the Copa America Centenario quarterfinals after a 4-2 win over Panama on Tuesday. Eduardo Vargas and Alexis Sanchez scored braces to ensure Chile's spot in the last eight of the tournament despite an early scare.

Miguel Camargo gave Panama a fifth-minute lead at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia - his first international goal - but Vargas restored parity just 10 minutes later. The Hoffenheim forward added his second two minutes before the halftime break, before teeing up Sanchez to volley home early in the second half.

Panama scored with 15 minutes left through Abdiel Arroyo to set up a tense finish, but Sanchez struck a second in the closing stages to seal Chile's passage into the knockout stages. It means Chile is likely to finish second to Argentina in Group D and face Mexico in the last eight.

Juan Antonio Pizzi made three changes to his Chile lineup, bringing in Vargas, Marcelo Diaz and Jose Fuenzalida for Mauricio Pinilla, Fabian Orellana and Pablo Hernandez.

Panama, needing a win, made five changes from the side that was routed 5-0 by Argentina, including Camargo for Armando Cooper, while the suspended Anibal Godoy was replaced by Amilcar Henriquez. To the surprise of the pro-Chile crowd, it was Camargo who gave Panama a shock lead inside the opening five minutes.

A defensive error led to a Panama attack before Camargo hit a long-range effort that was misjudged by Claudio Bravo, leaving the Barcelona goalkeeper stunned.
Chile knew a defeat would see it eliminated and looked to get back in the game immediately, with wave after wave of attacks on the Panama defense, which was holding firm.

That was until a neat one-two between Sanchez and Arturo Vidal opened up some space for the former to have a shot on goal, which was brilliantly saved by Jaime Penedo. However, Vargas was quickest to react to the loose ball in the area, slotting home from close range to level.

Vidal had two gilt-edged chances soon after to put Chile ahead, his first a header superbly kept out by Penedo, before a second effort less than 30 seconds later went just over the crossbar. But Chile's pressure did eventually lead to a second goal, with Vargas heading home a teasing Jean Beausejour cross on the stroke of halftime.

Panama coach Hernan Dario Gomez brought on Gabriel Torres and Arroyo for Luis Tejada and Roberto Nurse for the second half, but changing his forward line could not stop Chile scoring a third.

Vargas was in for his hat trick but managed to pick out Sanchez at the back post, and the Arsenal star blasted home an unstoppable volley to give Chile some breathing space.

Panama's two substitutes combined five minutes later for a good chance, but Torres could only blast Arroyo's cutback over the bar, before the latter found the net in the 75th minute.

Arroyo was unmarked at the back post after a flick-on from a free kick and his header could not be kept out by Bravo, who fumbled it into his own net. But Chile made sure of the result in the dying stages, with Sanchez's well-placed header beating Penedo.

Argentina 3-0 Bolivia: First-half blitz sets up Venezuela Copa America clash

    ezequiel-lavezzi-argentina-06142015_10t53fwhvlwt61764m3j64na9s.jpg

Argentina booked a quarterfinal clash against Venezuela following a comfortable 3-0 win over Bolivia in the Copa America Centenario on Tuesday. First-half goals from Erik Lamela, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Victor Cuesta sealed the win, confirming top spot in Group D with nine points.

Lamela and Lavezzi scored within two minutes of each other, before Cuesta scored his first international goal in his first start just past the half-hour mark.

Lionel Messi was introduced at halftime but the goals dried up for Argentina in the second period, running out the three-goal win at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.Argentina will now face Venezuela in the last eight of the special-edition centenary tournament, while Chile meets Mexico.

With their spot in the quarterfinals already confirmed, Gerardo Martino elected to make six changes from the lineup that defeated Panama 5-0, but that did not mean it was a weakened team. The likes of Sergio Aguero, Lavezzi and Lamela all came into the side, and it was the latter who got things going in the 13th minute.

Bolivia conceded a foul in a dangerous area and Lamela's free kick took a heavy deflection off Yasmani Duk, beating Carlos Lampe for just his second international goal. It took Argentina less than two minutes to double its lead, with Lavezzi converting a loose ball in the area after Gonzalo Higuain had his shot saved by Lampe.

Cuesta had been drafted into the team to give Javier Mascherano a rest, and the central defender scored his first goal for Argentina in the 32nd minute.Lavezzi capitalized on a blocked shot and played in a low cross for Cuesta, and the Independiente man stretched to get the crucial touch.

Higuain almost made it 4-0 heading into halftime but he had his shot blocked, before Messi was introduced in place of the Napoli striker for the second period.
Messi was immediately busy, much to the delight of the crowd, and had a curling free kick on the hour-mark just miss.As the half wore on Argentina applied less and less pressure on the Bolivia defense.

That did not stop them dominating possession, however, with Bolivia struggling to get a touch of the ball in its own half, let alone in the opposition's.But Bolivia held firm in defense, keeping the scoreline to a somewhat respectable three-goal margin.

Pedro: I want to return to Barcelona

    pedro-cropped_1mhk17f74qrv91xv34g400vkwp.jpg

Chelsea forward Pedro has revealed he wants to return to Barcelona and says he has already spoken to the Spanish club's president Josep Maria Bartomeu regarding a possible move.

Pedro signed for Chelsea in August 2015 having previously spent his entire career at Barca, but struggled to make a big impact last season, scoring just eight goals in all competitions in his maiden campaign at Stamford Bridge.

The Spain international claimed last month that he “misses” Barcelona but insisted he had no regrets about joining Chelsea last summer. But it has since emerged that Pedro is pushing for a move back to Barcelona with the winger keen to retire with the Catalan giants.

"Hopefully [I can return to Barcelona], I know it's difficult, I spoke with the president when we saw each other at the Cup final and I also spoke with all the people who love me there," he told beIN Sports.

"It's complicated, but I've always said I would like to retire at Barca."The years have passed and Barca have some of the best players in the world, it's a very demanding club and coming back is complicated, but I can't rule it out.

"I spent 11 or 12 years in Barcelona, my family are there and a lot of my friends, as well. The fans love me a lot, I felt valued by the club, and it's always very tough to leave the club of your dreams.

"Ultimately, I had to make that decision because I saw that my chances had become exhausted."

Russia 1-2 Slovakia: Hamsik the hero as Falcons hold on

Marek Hamsik produced a superb performance to inspire Slovakia to a 2-1 Euro 2016 win over Russia.

The Napoli star scored one and set up another for Vladimir Weiss at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, to give his country their maiden European Championship victory following a 2-1 loss to Wales in their Group B opener.
Hamsik found the net with a stunning strike on the stroke of half-time to give Slovakia a 2-0 lead, 23 minutes after playing provider for Weiss. Weiss had took advantage of an outstanding long ball from Hamsik, beating a pair of Russia defenders and thumping Slovakia into the lead.

Denis Glushakov got one back for Russia with 10 minutes to go with a well-placed header but they were unable to complete the comeback despite a heavy spell of late pressure.

The defeat inflicted further Euro 2016 pain on Russia, who were handed a suspended disqualification and a £119,000 fine by UEFA for crowd trouble against England during last Saturday's 1-1 draw.

Jan Kozak's Slovakia will now look to make sure of their place in the last 16 against England while Russia's progression hangs in the balance ahead of the group-stage finale with Wales.

Slovakia were the better team in an uneventful first 20 minutes, but long range efforts from Hamsik and Jan Durica failed to test goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev.

Russia striker Artem Dzyuba had the first real chance of the game but could not generate enough power on his header after good work down the right from Igor Smolnikov.

Dzyuba then turned provider for Fyodor Smolov after 27 minutes, but his fierce strike brushed the post and went wide.Russia were soon made to pay for their profligacy when Hamsik played a wonderful searching pass to former Manchester City forward Weiss, who cut back inside and buried his shot in the bottom corner.

The impressive Hamsik doubled Slovakia's advantage in superb style on stroke of half time with a curling effort that cannoned in off the inside of the Akinfeev's post.Russia rallied in the early exchanges of the second half but lacked cutting edge in the final third.

Oleg Shatov was given space to shoot by the Slovakia defence but hit a sailing effort over the bar and Aleksandr Kokorin's blocked strike trickled into the arms of Matus Kozacik.Slovakia's Durica then put in a brilliant block to deny Russia a way back into the game courtesy of a Smolov volley.

Glushakov's header gave Russia hope and the midfielder had a chance to equalise in the final minutes, only to see his volley go agonisingly wide.

Rooney: Wales more than just Bale

Wayne Rooney insists England must not focus solely on Gareth Bale when they face Wales in their pivotal Euro 2016 Group B clash in Lens on Thursday.Real Madrid star Bale is Wales' most high-profile player and scored the opener in the 2-1 defeat of Slovakia on Saturday.

And while Rooney is an admirer of the former Tottenham winger, he is wary of focusing all his attention on one man."He's a fantastic player, but Wales have a lot of good players in the team," he said. "It's not England versus Gareth Bale, it's England versus Wales and we have to stop a few of their players if we want to win the game."

England go into the match third in Group B, following a 1-1 draw with Russia on Saturday, but Roy Hodgson's men know that a win would take them top."We'll have the same mentality as we had for Russia [a 1-1 draw on Saturday]," Manchester United's Rooney added.

"We've two games left, we're not going to prepare differently for Wales. It's the same preparation whether it's Russia, Wales or Slovakia. It's down to us as players now. We've done our work on the training field and it's down to us to do it on the pitch.""The tournament makes it a special game but we know there are three points at stake, two British teams and we are looking forward to it.

"We've prepared well and will give everything to get the three points."Wales, and Bale in particular, have been vocal in the build-up to the encounter, which is regarded by many as an international derby.

Rooney, though, insists he and his team-mates have not been affected by the mind games.Asked why he thought they had taken that approach, Rooney added: "You’ll have to ask the Wales players that.

"We’ve been preparing for this game as we always do behind closed doors and all the information we need we've worked on on the training pitch or in meetings."

Romania 1-1 Switzerland: Mehmedi leaves Swiss on brink of last 16

Admir Mehmedi led Switzerland's comeback as the nation grabbed a 1-1 draw against Romania, leaving them just a point away from a guaranteed place in the last 16.

Vladimir Petkovic's men could have qualified for the knock-out stages for the first time with a victory in Paris, but fell behind to Bogdan Stancu's first-half penalty – Romania's second spot-kick of the tournament.

Admir Mehmedi brilliantly levelled the scores after the break, preventing Romania from recording just their second win at a European Championship.

Switzerland looked the more likely to win it from there, but failed to make their pressure count and will conclude their group campaign against hosts France.
Romania, meanwhile, will surely need a win in their match against underdogs Albania if they are to extend their tournament.

While Anghel Iordanescu made four alterations to the Romania team that valiantly lost to hosts France on the opening night, Switzerland were unchanged from their win against Albania, and Haris Seferovic, trusted to lead the line again despite missing a glut of chances last time out, had further opportunities early on.

Taking a pass in his stride and turning Vlad Chiriches in the sixth minute, the forward sent an effort flying past the far post, before shooting tamely at Ciprian Tatarusanu 10 minutes later.

And, this time, Switzerland were immediately made to pay for his profligacy.
With Stephan Lichtsteiner tugging Alexandru Chipciu's shirt in the area, Romania were awarded a penalty. As against France, Stancu took full advantage to find the net.But there was almost an instant response.

Like Stancu, Fabian Schar had scored in his side's opener, and he almost caught Tatarusanu out with a stunning long-range volley, acrobatically tipped over by the Fiorentina goalkeeper.

Petkovic's side were soon close to being caught out again, though. After Chipciu curled wide from a tight angle, right back Cristian Sapunaru should have done better as he prodded a loose ball against the post.

However, with Switzerland knowing a win would seal their progression, red shirts continued to pour forward, and Blerim Dzemaili inexplicably placed a free header off target from close range. This Romania outfit had Europe's best defence in qualifying, and, given their pace on the counter, the Swiss appeared to be playing into their hands. But, finally, with 57 minutes played, Mehmedi forged a breakthrough.

Ricardo Rodriguez's scrambled corner dropped onto his team-mate's toe, perfect for the Bayer Leverkusen forward to thump high into the net.And Switzerland were not happy to settle for a point, introducing teenage superstar Breel Embolo from the bench.

The Basel youngster was a constant nuisance in the final half hour of the match, but Yann Sommer had to remain on his toes to repel a ferocious Gabriel Torje free-kick.And for all the Swiss pressure, they struggled to create clear sights of goal in the closing period of the game.

Dzemaili flashed a volley over the top, but Romania were able to close the game out to keep their slim hopes of qualifying from the group stages alive.
