Mourinho: Liverpool is just another match for Man Utd

Manchester United's Saturday showdown with Liverpool is no more important than their forthcoming cup clashes against Sevilla and Brighton and Hove Albion, according to Jose Mourinho_One of English football's bitterest feuds returns to Old Trafford on Saturday, with two points separating second-placed United from Liverpool in third in the Premier League table.

Mourinho's trophy-laden career has taken in stints with Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid – bringing him into direct contact with some of European football's biggest rivalries.

Nevertheless, he claims he remains unbitten by the derby day bug.Asked whether he had a greater understanding of the United-Liverpool rivalry ahead of his fourth stab at the fixture, the Portuguese told reporters: "I still don't know because in my mentality every match is the same and I'm not very good on that culture of this match is special, this rivalry is special."I never looked to AC Milan as the biggest rival, I never looked at Atletico Madrid as the enemy, I never looked at Arsenal as the big rival.

"For me it is just a big match with two historical clubs, not just in England - in the world. I still don't look to some matches as a special opponent. It is a big match because we are speaking about some big clubs."We have three matches now – Liverpool, Sevilla and Brighton. If you ask me if I could choose one to be the most important, I can't choose.

"The most important is Liverpool because it is the next but the other two are knockouts. I don't think the fans are happy if I say Liverpool is the biggest match of the season and Sevilla is not a big match."Everyone wants to go to Wembley for the FA Cup semi-finals. Is Brighton less important than the Liverpool match?"

Mourinho's tactics in the drab 0-0 draw at Anfield last October drew widespread criticism but he was predictably keen to give the views of pundits the short shrift."Some of the guys with an opinion, they couldn't resolve their own problem when they were managers," he added.

"They give opinions like it looks like they have solutions for everything but it's not like that"But they are in a position where they can give opinions about everything."

With a full schedule of European action to watch this week, the United boss managed to avoid delving into any build-up to the Liverpool game.
    "Sometimes I read, sometimes I don't; sometimes I listen, sometimes I don't," Mourinho commented.

"This week I was more focused on enjoying the Champions League and Europa League and preparing my match."

:love:Manchester United 2 Liverpool 1: Rashford double secures huge victory

    4A0F76EE00000578-5485017-image-a-50_1520687703705.jpg

Marcus Rashford emphatically marked his return to Manchester United's starting XI with a double in a huge 2-1 Premier League victory over rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday.

In the line-up for the first time since Boxing Day as Jose Mourinho made three changes with Paul Pogba ruled out through injury, Rashford scored a first-half brace to boost United's hopes of finishing second to runaway leaders Manchester City.

The England international ended a run of 10 Premier League matches without a goal to send United five points clear of third-placed Liverpool in the 200th competitive meeting between the sides, though Tottenham could close to within four by beating Bournemouth on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp made five alterations to the side that secured progression to the Champions League quarter-finals against Porto on Tuesday, with Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold reinforcing the defence, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mohamed Salah returned further up the pitch.

But that backline was bullied by Romelu Lukaku, who proved a magnet for the long balls from which he helped create Rashford's goals - the first of which came after a delightful change of direction in the 14th minute. An own goal from Eric Bailly on his first start since November having been sidelined with a knee injury gave Liverpool hope during an improved second-half display, but the Red Devils held on for a potentially crucial victory.

Klopp on Friday said the clash was not "an attacking team against a defending team" but that was exactly how the opening stages played out, with United sitting back and Liverpool controlling possession. It was the hosts who took the lead, though. David de Gea's goal-kick was flicked on to Rashford by Lukaku, and he brilliantly chopped inside of Alexander-Arnold and fired inside the far post.

Van Dijk wasted a glorious chance to equalise in the 23rd minute, his shoulder rather than head connecting with a corner from James Milner - wearing the captain's armband as Jordan Henderson sat out with a dead leg - as he missed the target from inside the six-yard box.United made the most of that reprieve by doubling their advantage just 62 seconds later, again from a long pass from deep.

Van Dijk's challenge on Juan Mata after brilliant work from Lukaku inadvertently sent the ball to Rashford, who guided it beyond an out-of-position Loris Karius with the help of a nick off Alexander-Arnold.It should have been three when Alexis Sanchez picked out the unmarked Mata in the middle of the area before half-time, but the Spain international sent his overhead kick wide.

Liverpool stepped up a gear after the restart and saw penalty claims for Ashley Young's foul on Salah and a handball by Antonio Valencia turned down by referee Craig Pawson.

They were rewarded in the 66th minute when Sadio Mane beat Scott McTominay for pace down the left and sent in a cross that Bailly approached with the wrong foot and sent into the back of his own net. There were boos when Mourinho replaced Rashford with Marouane Fellaini to add an extra body in midfield with 20 minutes remaining, and the Belgium international was fortunate not to concede a penalty when he sent Mane to ground.

Klopp sent on Georginio Wijnaldum and Dominic Solanke as Liverpool fought to restore parity, but Salah sliced a wild volley over in the sixth minute of stoppage time as United held on for a third successive league win.

Malaga 0 Barcelona 2: Suarez and Coutinho cheer absent father Messi

    4A122F0900000578-5485881-image-a-30_1520716074752.jpg

Barcelona made light of Lionel Messi's absence and continued their march towards LaLiga glory with a 2-0 victory over 10-man Malaga.

Typically, Messi was Barca's match-winning hero when Ernesto Valverde's side beat nearest rivals Atletico Madrid 1-0 last weekend, but sat this one out after his wife gave birth to the couple's third child

Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho scored excellent goals with Messi missing inside the opening half hour and Barca's lead at the summit – with Atleti to host Celta Vigo on Sunday – is now 11 points.

At 2-0 loss at La Rosaleda last April landed a damaging blow against Barcelona's title defence last season, but this Malaga find themselves rooted hopelessly to the bottom of LaLiga.

Any prospect of an unlikely comeback for the hosts became even more remote when right winger Samu was deservedly sent for an atrocious 30th-minute lunge on Jordi Alba.

Youssef En-Nesyri and Maxime Lestienne missed chances as Malaga fought gamely, but, sitting as they do 11 point from safety, their relegation appears a similar formality to Barcelona wrapping up the title.

Suarez was frustrated by a brilliant save from Roberto in the 13th minute, a strong hand keeping a shot out of the bottom-left corner after Paulinho found the Uruguay international with a clever cushioned pass.

The Malaga goalkeeper had no chance two minutes later when Suarez darted between his two centre-backs to head home Jordi Alba's superb raking cross from the left.Paulinho was at the heart of many of Barca's best moments early on and fired into the side-netting before another Brazilian wonderfully illuminated the contest.

Ousmane Dembele clipped a pass into Coutinho's feet and the man who replaced the France winger as Barca's record signing showed ingenuity to direct a perfect backheeled finish past Roberto.Samu then allowed his frustrations to boil over in ugly fashion as he launched himself at Alba, who was fortunate to escape with nothing more than a limp and a torn right sock.

That left Malaga with a dauntingly uphill task and they could scarcely afford En-Nesyri wasting a glorious 36th-minute chance. The shot-shy forward has two goals to his name all season and headed off target from inside the six-yard box after Manuel Iturra dug out a cross.

Coutinho forced another sharp stop from Roberto before the break and the Malaga number one continued to be busy in the second half.Samuel Umtiti should have made him work harder when Dembele cleverly delayed a chipped cross to the far post in the 55th minute.

Dembele, frustrated by injury for much of his debut season in Spain, was starting to enjoy himself and saw Roberto hold impressively after Sergi Roberto neatly laid Ivan Rakitic's searching pass into his path.Coutinho was in a determined but fruitless pursuit for one of his long-range specials to find the net, while Lestienne hooked across goal at the other end.

The game was ambling towards its conclusion by that stage, although Suarez ensured he will sit out next weekend's match against Athletic Bilbao by earning a booking for a clumsy 84th-minute shove on Ignasi Miquel.

Bayern Munich 6 Hamburg 0: Lewandowski hat-trick brings title within reach

    4A10A95F00000578-5485763-image-a-160_1520707191840.jpg

Robert Lewandowski became Bayern Munich's highest-scoring foreign player and brought up 100 Bundesliga goals with a hat-trick in a 6-0 rout of relegation-threatened Hamburg.

The 29-year-old Poland international struck twice in the first 20 minutes of a game that had the feel of an exhibition match at Allianz Arena, to break the record previously held by Brazilian striker Giovane Elber.Lewandowski missed a late penalty, but was gifted a second spot-kick and scored to take his tally to 142 goals in 182 games across all competitions for Bayern.

Franck Ribery also grabbed a brace and Arjen Robben was on target to ensure Jupp Heynckes' side took another step towards their sixth consecutive Bundesliga title.

Heynckes restored Ribery, Robben and Lewandowski to his starting line-up for the game and saw his faith in Bayern's senior professionals repaid with a clinical display of finishing, but suffered a blow when substitute Corentin Tolisso had to be carried off with a serious leg injury. The victory puts Bayern 20 points clear with 24 left to play for and the champions could have the title wrapped up before the end of March.

The opening goal felt inevitable from the outset and arrived after eight minutes when Lewandowski's pass to Robben was intercepted but the loose ball ran through to Ribery, who skipped over the outstretched arms of Christian Mathenia and rolled the ball into the unguarded net.

It was 2-0 four minutes later when Joshua Kimmich hung the ball up in front of the Hamburg goal and Lewandowski shook off his marker before sending a simple downwards header into the net from close range.

Bayern's third came after 19 minutes when Jerome Boateng's long ball was squared into the box exquisitely by David Alaba and Lewandowski side-footed the ball past Mathenia before the Hamburg goalkeeper could react.

The second half was 10 minutes old when Robben scored his first league goal of 2018 to make it 4-0, slamming the ball into the top-left corner of the net from just inside the box after good work by Alaba.Bayern's day was spoiled when second-half substitute Tolisso collided with Hamburg's Vasilije Janjicic and suffered an injury to his shin that left him unable to continue.

Heynckes sent on Sebastian Rudy in his place and the Germany international soon announced himself with a curling shot from the corner of the penalty area that flew only a yard wide of Mathenia's goal. With 10 minutes left to play, Ribery made it 5-0 with a superb solo effort, jinking his way through a crowd of players before beating Mathenia in a one-on-one - the pick of the afternoon's goals.

There was still time for Thiago Alcantara to win a penalty when Kyriakos Papadopoulos pushed him in the penalty area, but Lewandowski ballooned the spot-kick into the stands. Two minutes later Filip Kostic fouled Joshua Kimmich and the referee pointed to the spot again.

Lewandowski made no mistake on his second attempt, burying the ball into the right-hand side of the net to complete his treble.

Paris Saint-Germain 5 Metz 0: Nkunku stars as PSG run riot

    4A107D8500000578-0-image-a-48_1520729869882.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain bounced back from their Champions League disappointment with an emphatic 5-0 win over rock-bottom Metz at the Parc des Princes. The French giants crashed out of European football's premier competition to Real Madrid in midweek, but their domestic superiority was once again on show as they restored their lead at the Ligue 1 summit to 14 points.

PSG's star of the show was Christopher Nkunku, who took full advantage of Edinson Cavani's absence through suspension to deliver a display brimming with invention, industry and, most importantly, goals.

The 20-year-old - making just his second start of the season - took centre stage after Thomas Meunier's early goal, flashing two superb strikes past Eiji Kawashima in the space of eight first-half minutes.Kylian Mbappe netted a fourth just before the break as the hosts threatened to rack up a cricket score.

As it was, Unai Emery's side opted to take a more pedestrian approach to the second half and only added one more - Thiago Silva heading home in the 82nd minute.

The tone for the most comfortable of victories was set inside the opening five minutes as Meunier scored his fourth league goal of the season.Mbappe's goal-bound effort was deflected into the path of the marauding Belgian, who coolly slotted past Kawashima into the far corner.

Mathieu Dossevi then twice came close to pulling the visitors level. His first attempt was diverted onto the crossbar by the outstretched foot of Presnel Kimpembe and his second shot from just outside the area was well held by Alphonse Areola.

They were made to pay for those missed chances after 20 minutes when Nkunku latched onto Marco Verratti's incisive pass to drill a left-footed shot past the exposed Kawashima. His first ever senior brace followed just eight minutes later when he picked up Angel Di Maria's pass and found the bottom corner with a fine strike from 20 yards.

He was denied a hat-trick when his header was incorrectly ruled out for offside before Mbappe scored the goal his industrious display deserved moments before the interval.Verratti was again the provider, sliding a perfect pass through the Metz backline for the 19-year-old to pick up and dispatch past Kawashima.

The France striker should have scored a second shortly after the restart, but inexplicably whipped wide when it looked easier to score.Nkunku was again denied his hat-trick on the hour when Kawashima showed outstanding reactions to get down and repel his close-range effort on the line. The Japanese international was called into action again soon after to deny Mbappe before instinctively deflecting Moussa Niakhate's attempted clearance over the crossbar.

Thiago Silva added a late flourish to the scoreline, though, with a thumping header from Giovani Lo Celso's corner as PSG put their Madrid humbling firmly behind them.

Chelsea 2 Crystal Palace 1: Willian scores again as champions bounce back

    4A11950C00000578-5485693-image-a-128_1520706311309.jpg

Chelsea bounced back from consecutive Premier League defeats by easing to a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, as Willian scored his fifth goal in five games.

The reigning champions lost to Manchester United and Manchester City in their last two games, but things were rather more straightforward this time around and they should have claimed a more comprehensive win over Palace given the number of chances they created.Chelsea were on top for most of the first half and attempted a total of 16 shots, though both of their goals had more than a hint of fortune about them.

The in-form Willian got the first, as his 25-yard effort took a deflection on its way in, before Martin Kelly put into his own net after a Davide Zappacosta shot caused problems.

Palace nearly halved the deficit just after the restart when Alexander Sorloth hit the post, but that proved to be one of few opportunities for the visitors, who slipped to a fourth successive league defeat.

Patrick van Aanholt grabbed a consolation in stoppage time but it mattered little in the grand scheme of things and Chelsea moved to within two points of fourth-placed Tottenham ahead of their trip to Bournemouth on Sunday.

The early exchanges gave every indication Palace were in for a long day, as Chelsea wasted no time in piling on the pressure. They somehow failed to take the lead in the eighth minute, though, as Olivier Giroud's scuffed effort from close-range went straight to Wayne Hennessey.

But the goalkeeper was helpless in the 25th minute, as Willian darted in from the left and saw his long-range effort deflect in off James Tomkins, finding the bottom-left corner. And Chelsea's second soon after was even uglier from Palace's perspective.

Willian stepped over a pass on the edge of the area, allowing Eden Hazard to take charge and feed Zappacosta into the right side of the box, with the Italian's attempt hitting Hennessey and going in off Kelly in calamitous fashion.

They almost added a fourth on the stroke of half-time, but Tomkins made a brilliant intervention on the line to deny Giroud at the end of an exceptional move.Palace almost pulled one back early in the second half, as Sorloth charged through on goal and blasted against the left-hand post.

The hosts responded by crafting another fine chance of their own – Willian embarking on a remarkable solo run, before exchanging passes with Giroud and seeing his eventual shot crucially blocked just in front of the goal.

Giroud was presented with an even better opportunity 23 minutes from time, but he could only hit the post from the middle of the box after Marcos Alonso's cut-back, and the former Arsenal man was replaced by Alvaro Morata soon after.
Van Aanholt set up a grand finale by providing a neat finish after good play by Wilfried Zaha in the 89th minute, but it proved to be too little, too late as Chelsea held on.

Eibar 1 Real Madrid 2: Two-goal Ronaldo rescues Zidane's men late on

    4A0F9C7900000578-5485119-image-a-28_1520689477074.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo was Real Madrid's hero yet again as the in-form Portugal star scored twice in Saturday's 2-1 win at Eibar, including the late winner that prevents them losing further ground on LaLiga's top two.

Eibar defender Ivan Ramis had seemingly done enough to secure a point for the home side that would have left their visitors trailing second-placed Atletico Madrid by six points, but Ronaldo struck in the 84th minute to rescue the win and ensure Valencia cannot leap above them later on Saturday.

Before kick-off, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona had been the only two sides to leave Eibar with all three points since the end of October and Zinedine Zidane's side struggled to get to grips with their wingers during the early exchanges.

Eventually Madrid appeared to exert a degree of control and Ronaldo – following a moment of Luka Modric inspiration – opened the scoring in the 34th minute, continuing his brilliant recent form.

But Eibar secured themselves a deserved equaliser five minutes after the restart, as Ramis headed in a corner from Pedro Leon, who provided an assist against his former club for the sixth time, the most he has provided against any other opponent in LaLiga.

Luck appeared to have deserted Madrid after they wasted several chances, with Ronaldo among those guilty, but the Ballon d'Or holder produced an emphatic late header with his 17th goal in 10 games, moving them to within four points of Atletico, who face Celta Vigo on Sunday.Madrid travelled to Ipurua knowing they were not going to be facing an Eibar side that is easily dominated.

And Eibar's start gave every indication that Zidane's men were in for a long day, as they troubled through Leon in the first minute – the former Madrid winger's cross nearly finding Kike Garcia.

Eibar appeared to target Madrid's full-backs and their crosses from both flanks continued to trouble, even if they often just missed the intended target.Keylor Navas then had to be at his best in the 19th minute, tipping Kike's 20-yard effort just past the post.

Madrid – who lost Raphael Varane to a head injury – gained a foothold, though, with Gareth Bale forcing the approaching Marko Dmitrovic into action in the 32nd minute.Shortly after, the visitors had the lead – Modric finding Ronaldo with a remarkable lofted pass using the outside of his foot and the forward finishing the chance with aplomb.

But Eibar once again looked an attacking threat upon the restart, with Navas called into action early on as he tipped Gonzalo Escalante's deep delivery over the crossbar.

And from the resulting corner, Ramis lost Sergio Ramos and headed beyond the helpless Navas to equalise.Ronaldo seemed destined to restore their lead when Bale passed into the area just after the hour mark, but Dmitrovic produced a sensational save to deny him.

Eibar should have put themselves ahead 14 minutes from the end when Escalante nodded the ball to Takashi Inui and he headed well over from close range.Ronaldo subsequently punished that miss, meeting Dani Carvajal's right-wing cross with a powerful header that gave Dmitrovic no chance and sent Madrid back to the capital victorious.

Everton 2 Brighton and Hove Albion 0: Toffees enjoy home comforts despite Rooney penalty miss

Everton continued their fine home form with a 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion courtesy of Gaetan Bong's own goal and an excellent strike from Cenk Tosun.

A match pitting together two of the Premier League's mid-table clubs never looked likely to provide a feast of entertainment and the visitors' lack of ambition made for a largely drab affair, until a frantic final 30 minutes in which Wayne Rooney missed a penalty and Anthony Knockaert saw red.

Sam Allardyce's side certainly showed more desire to force the issue and were left to dwell on a first half of missed chances after going in goalless at the break. But Bong inadvertently made the breakthrough in the second half when he shinned Yannick Bolasie's curling delivery into an unguarded net, with Theo Walcott lurking.

Tosun then scored for the second game running as he fired in off the underside of the crossbar and Knockaert was dismissed for the Seagulls having lunged in on the returning Leighton Baines, before Mat Ryan made an excellent save from Rooney's spot-kick.The Toffees have now lost just once in 10 home league matches since Ronald Koeman left, with Saturday's triumph all but securing their top-flight safety.

Brighton can also almost begin to plan for another campaign among the elite, despite having seen a fine seven-match unbeaten streak in all competitions ended in meek fashion.

Baines' return to action for the first time since November headlined Everton's four changes and Allardyce's men – beaten 2-1 at Burnley last time out – showed some positive early intent.Seamus Coleman dragged a low shot beyond the far post in a dominant start for the hosts, who also saw Bolasie prod wide on the volley after Ryan had flapped at a cross.

Brighton's first shot came in the 25th minute as Glenn Murray stung the palms of Jordan Pickford from 25 yards, sending a timely reminder of the visitors' potential threat.Bolasie did well to get behind the Albion defence and connect with a looping header that dropped narrowly off target, with Ryan's goal living a somewhat charmed life.

A low-key start to the second half saw the Goodison crowd fall into near silence until Rooney's thunderous drive was bravely blocked away by Shane Duffy. And the breakthrough arrived on the hour mark, Walcott seeking to latch on to Bolasie's deep cross and Bong diverting into his own net under pressure.

Chris Hughton's charges, winless away from home in the league since November, struggled to mount any meaningful response against a home side who lost Walcott to injury 18 minutes from time.

Everton shrugged off that setback as Baines fed Tosun, who produced a powerful finish that rattled in off Ryan's crossbar. There was still time for Knockaert to see red following a moment of madness in which he dived in two-footed on Baines, while Rooney spurned the chance to increase the margin of victory after Dominic Calvert-Lewin had been fouled by Duffy.
