I think there's more to it than that. In the present William was alive as Delores(Hale) was leaving. The scene before that was him going down the elevator. We never saw what happened in between. If he wanted to check a scenario where he didn't shoot Emily then he would be testing that scene, not this one.

There seem to be lot of time span in between as the forge in post credit scene looks abandoned for a long time. So it might be something we don't expect.

I think William knew why host Delos failed and that he made the same choice of abandoning his son.(Forge was his idea to begin with)
