Hazard: Belgium lacked magic to break down 'efficient' France

Belgium captain Eden Hazard admitted that his side failed to find a "moment of magic" against France during their World Cup semi-final after his team's 1-0 loss on Tuesday .

A second-half header from Samuel Umtiti was all Didier Deschamps' men needed to book their spot in Sunday's final.Hazard was Belgium's most threatening player as his team struggled to find a way through a compact France outfit.

But the star attacker claims he would prefer to play for his team and lose than be on the winning side but playing what he called an "efficient" French style."I prefer to lose with this Belgium than win with this France," Hazard said, via Het Nieuwsblad .

"But they do defend strongly and are very efficient. We have not found their weak point. That little moment of magic needed to score was not there. "We have seen a fantastic Belgian team and have been eliminated by a team that was more solid than us."

The loss saw Belgium miss out on reaching a first World Cup final, but they can still better their fourth-place finish of 1986.

Pogba was almost everywhere - Deschamps singles out midfielder after semi-final win

Didier Deschamps was full of praise for Paul Pogba after the midfielder played a starring role in France's World Cup semi-final win over Belgium.Samuel Umtiti scored the only goal of the game in the 51st minute as Les Bleus reached a third final, where they will play either Croatia or England on Sunday.

Pogba was not involved in the winner but worked tirelessly for the team's cause in St Petersburg, creating three chances in attack while also making four tackles.

"All players need to be mentioned but it's true that Pogba was almost everywhere, not only in attack but he was also efficient in defence," Deschamps told the media.

"I think [Belgium coach Roberto] Martinez had decided to put [Marouane] Fellaini on him so Fellaini was only worried about Pogba, so of course he had less freedom on the ball."But he knew what to do, he left very little waste. He was more creative in terms of recovery of the ball, one-on-ones, he performed very well.

"Paul has grown in the team, he is a very expressive player. He knows what he has to do and what he does on the pitch can only increase his legitimacy in the group."

France last won the World Cup in 1998, with captain Deschamps lifting the trophy in Paris after a resounding 3-0 triumph over Brazil in a one-sided final. He refused to be drawn on comparisons between the successful squad of 20 years ago and the current crop, instead focusing on his desire to write a "new page" in the country's footballing history.

"They have to live in their own time - never, ever mention your own history [in 1998]," he said."The players know it. Some of them were not born but they saw pictures. It belongs to other French people who lived through it, but not the younger generation.

"I can't make comparisons, talk to them about players from 20 years ago, even 10 years ago. I'm here with them today to write a new page in history, the most beautiful page."I'm not saying I'm not proud of what we did 20 years ago - no-one can erase that - but one must live in their times. I cannot look and see what is in the rear-view mirror. That is not how you look forward.

"One day I will stop and think about it, but that time has not come yet."

Mbappe: I don't care about Ballon d'Or, I want the World Cup

Kylian Mbappe says he wants to win the World Cup and is not interested in individual awards such as the Ballon d'Or.Mbappe starred as France beat Belgium 1-0 in Tuesday's World Cup semi-final, booking a spot against either England or Croatia, creating a great chance for Olivier Giroud with a wonderful backheel pass.

France have not won the tournament since 1998 when they triumphed on home soil, with Mbappe tipped as a possible Golden Ball winner due to his fine performances.

The 19-year-old has also been suggested as a contender for the Ballon d'Or, having become the first teenager since Pele to score more than once in a World Cup game.Paris Saint-Germain forward Mbappe, though, has his full focus on Russia 2018 as France look to go one step further than their loss in the final of Euro 2016 against Portugal.

"It's unimaginable. It is the dream of a life, of a future life, of everything. I do not have the words," Mbappe said to TF1. "Even in my biggest dreams I had not imagined that, and yet I am a big dreamer. But it remains a step.

"When you do not cheat and work for the collective, you are rewarded. As long as I can help the team, it's all that matters to me. "I do not care about the Ballon d'Or, I want the World Cup."

Man City sign Mahrez from Leicester

    4E1A06E200000578-5939643-image-a-72_1531255690278.jpg

Manchester City have completed the signing of Riyad Mahrez from Leicester for £60 million (€68m/$80m). The 27-year-old winger joins the Premier League champions on a five-year deal after the two sides reached an agreement. “I am so pleased to have joined City, a side playing great football under Pep Guardiola,” Mahrez told the club's website.

“Watching them from afar has been a pleasure. Pep is committed to playing attacking football, which is a perfect for me, and City’s performances last season were outstanding. They’re redefining the English game and I wanted to be a part of it.“I think we can be successful over the coming years and I believe my own game can develop under Pep’s management.”

The news brings an end to a deal that had long been in the making. Mahrez had come close to joining City when they made an offer for him on the final day of the transfer window in January, while he submitted a transfer request to the Foxes.

Although Leicester rejected the bid and City backed out, Pep Guardiola suggested afterwards that they would return for him in the summer. And Txiki Begiristain, City's director of football, says he is delighted to have finally captured one of the best players in the English top flight.

“Riyad is a hugely talented player. He beats defenders and creates space," he said.“Over the past few years, he has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most exciting players.“We’re sure he will bring additional attacking quality to our squad.”

Mahrez joined Leicester from Le Havre in January 2014 and helped them to a first place finish in the Championship. Two years later, he was named PFA Player of the Year after scoring 17 goals and setting up a further 10 as they won the Premier League title. He netted four and got two assists in the Champions League the following season as his side made it to the quarter-finals.

Everton close in on €24m Barcelona defender Mina

Everton are nearing a €24 million (£21m/$28m) move for Barcelona centre-back Yerry Mina, Goal understands. The Colombia international only joined Barca from Palmeiras in January, but played sparingly and does not feature in the Blaugrana's plans moving forward.

With the expected arrival of Clement Lenglet from Sevilla and the established duo of Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti, Mina's prospects for minutes at Barcelona are dim.

Despite a lack of playing time at the Camp Nou, the 23-year-old shined at the World Cup for his country, scoring three goals as the Cafeteros fell to England on penalties in the last 16.

Everton director of football Marcel Brands met with Barcelona on Monday regarding a transfer for Mina, the latest in an ongoing series of discussions between the two clubs.New Toffees manager Marco Silva is understood to be keen on signing the 6-foot-4 defender, and has made this desire clear to Brands and the club's hierarchy.

As Goal reported last week, Barcelona are open to selling Mina if they can retain a buy-back option in his contract.Liverpool have also expressed an interest in Mina, along with West Ham and Turkish side Fenerbahce, whose loan offer has been rejected.

Mina is understood to desire a move to a club that views him as an important player, and his performances in Russia have convinced the Toffees that he can be a key part of their defence going forward.

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of midfielder Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria.
The Uruguay international has completed his move to the Premier League club following the end of his involvement at the 2018 World Cup, where his country reached the quarter-finals.

Goal understands that the Gunners have paid £26 million (€30m/$34m) for the 22-year-old, who becomes the club's fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Bernd Leno and Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Head coach Unai Emery told the club's official website: “In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game. A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup."He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing."We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season.”

Torreira, who has only won eight caps for his country, featured in every game as Oscar Tabarez's side reached the quarter-finals, where they were beaten 2-0 by semi-finalists France. The midfielder made a total of 74 appearances for the Serie A side, scoring four goals.

He will wear the No.11 shirt in north London, and will link up with his new team-mates following a post-World Cup break.Torreira is unlikely to be the Gunners' final signing of the summer, with the club also pursuing a deal for Lorient's Matteo Guendouzi.Guendouzi is able to play in a defensive midfield role and made 18 appearances in Ligue 2 last season, while the fee is likely to surpass €8m (£7m/$9.4m) plus bonuses.

Luis Enrique excited by Spain challenge but won't change for critics

Luis Enrique is excited by the challenge of taking charge of Spain following a year out of the game after his Barcelona departure, though he does not plan to change his uneasy relationship with the media. The 48-year-old left Camp Nou at the end of the 2016-17 season, having won three Copas del Rey, two La Liga titles and the 2014-15 Champions League.

Luis Enrique takes the Spain job as the permanent successor to Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked on the eve of the World Cup after it was announced he was taking over at Real Madrid following the tournament.

Fernando Hierro took charge at Russia 2018 but could only lead Spain to a last-16 exit on penalties to the hosts, a second successive disappointing World Cup for the 2010 champions.

And after a year's sabbatical, Luis Enrique is ready to return to management with the national team."I am very excited, after having the opportunity to defend the shirt of the national team and suffer with it," he told Cuatro."I am happy and very excited to have the opportunity to be a coach now."

Luis Enrique's appointment has not been universally praised in Spain, with detractors noting his uneasy relationship with the media. And the manager is aware of what awaits him, though he does not plan to alter his style to soothe the concerns of the doubters.

"I know that criticism is something attached to any position in our country and I'm ready for it," he said."I will treat you [the media] as you deserve. I am 48 and it is difficult to change, I am happy with what I have done so far and I will not change."

Of accusations he is anti-Real Madrid, Luis Enrique added: "I would tell them that I love them very much and I am open to give my best version."

Lenglet set to complete €35m Barcelona move

Barcelona are set to complete the signing of Sevilla centre-back Clement Lenglet in a deal worth €35 million (£31m/$41m), Goal understands. The Frenchman's signing is likely to be made official on Wednesday after a medical. He will sign a five-year contract. The Blaugrana paid Lenglet's full €35m release clause after failing to negotiate a lower fee for the 23-year-old.

Lenglet became one of Europe's most sought-after defenders at Sevilla, following his arrival from Ligue 1 side Nancy in January 2017.Manchester United were also credited with an interest in securing his signature, but Lenglet has opted to stay in La Liga with Barca.

Sevilla made an effort to keep hold of Lenglet, but the defender rejected a new contract proposal from the Andalusian side.Lenglet becomes Barcelona's second major signing of the summer, after Arthur arrived from Gremio for €40m on Monday.

Vinicius Junior 'nervous' ahead of €45m Real Madrid move

    \
Teenage forward Vinicius Junior is 'nervous and anxious' ahead of his arrival at Real Madrid.Vinicus, who turns 18 on Thursday, initially signed for Los Blancos last May in a massive £40.5m (€45m/$54m) transfer from Flamengo.Brazilian law prohibited him from leaving prior to his 18th birthday, and he will now join Julen Lopetegui's men for pre-season on Monday.

Posting on Instagram, Vinicius wrote: ''On Friday I go to Madrid and I am a little nervous and anxious for this new stage of my life. 'A new challenge that I am going through, being so young, that God can bless me and also my family, that my friends can help me more. This is my biggest dream."

Chelsea close on €58m Jorginho & Sarri as De Laurentiis says sorry to Man City

Chelsea are closing in on a deal to sign Jorginho and appoint Maurizio Sarri as manager after Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis apologised to Manchester City for the delay in completing a move for the midfielder.

City had been aiming to complete a £50 million (€56m/$66.3m) deal to sign Jorginho , with De Laurentiis confirming he has accepted an offer from the Premier League champions.

However, City have yet to get the deal over the line and it now appears that Jorginho could instead follow his former Napoli coach Sarri to Chelsea, who are set to pay a combined fee of €58 million (£51.3m/$68m) plus €7m (£6m/$8.2m) in add ons for the pair.

Sarri has been replaced at Napoli by Carlo Ancelotti, but talks are still ongoing over a deal for him to take over from Antonio Conte as manager at Stamford Bridge.

De Laurentiis, though, says that where Jorginho ends up playing next season is a separate matter to Sarri as he waits for the 26-year-old to make a decision on his future.

"We said to ourselves if Jorginho has any requests, we'll take them into account,” said De Laurentiis at a press conference to present Ancelotti as Napoli’s new coach

“I accepted Manchester City’s offer 15 days ago, but I have to apologise to them.
“I can understand if the player would prefer to live in London rather than in Manchester, and if Chelsea pay him more.“Jorginho to Chelsea is not tied to Sarri.”

Brazil-born Jorginho had been left out of Napoli’s pre-season training camp , while the club have already signed Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz in a reported €30m (£26.5m/$35m) deal from Real Betis to replace him.Sarri’s future could also be close to a resolution after De Laurentiis acknowledged it is all now hinging on the Italian coach to resolve the situation.

De Laurentiis has been holding out for the £7m release clause in his former coach's contract, with lawyers continuing to work to secure the move that both Chelsea and Sarri want. But De Laurentiis has suggested that talks are now close to bearing fruit regarding an agreement for Sarri to be appointed by Chelsea.

“His case is at the finish line, it depends on him,” said De Laurentiis of Sarri.“We’ll see what happens in the next hours. My lawyers have submitted the text to his lawyers.”

Conte has been taking pre-season training while talks continue regarding both his future and that of Sarri, and he put the squad through a double session on Wednesday.

No offers for Man Utd target Rebic but anything can happen - Bobic

Eintracht Frankfurt have not received any offers for star striker Ante Rebic, Fredi Bobic says, but the Bundesliga side's sporting director admits they will struggle to hold on to him if any arrive in the close season. The 24-year-old has scored 12 goals since joining the German club from Fiorentina on an initial loan deal that was made permanent this summer.

Rebic's heroics for Croatia at the World Cup have only enhanced his reputation, as he grabbed attention with an excellent opening goal in his side's 3-0 win over Argentina, and he could raise his profile even more with his side set to take on England in the semi-finals.

Reports that Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Napoli are all watching him have recently emerged, adding to reported interest from Bayern Munich.Although Rebic has three years on his contract with Frankfurt, Bobic is not ruling out a big offer forcing his club's hand.

"I am very happy about the success of Ante Rebic with the Croatian national team," Bobic told Sport1. "The players and the coaching team are watching the World Cup games together in the training camp in the USA and, of course, are especially excited about Ante

"So far, there are no offers available and we're planning a steady season with Ante Rebic for the new season."Of course we know that a lot can happen when a big club makes an offer."We cannot compete economically with the big ones, but that's nothing new."

Ronaldo chose Juventus, we didn't approach him - Marotta

Cristiano Ronaldo made the first move to start negotiations with Juventus over his shock move from Real Madrid, chief executive Giuseppe Marotta has revealed.

The 33-year-old joined the Serie A side in a move worth €100m (£88m/$117m) plus €12m (£10.5/$14m) in additional charges, while he committed to a four-year contract that will see him net €30 million (£26.5m/$35m) each season.Juve tried to sign Ronaldo when he was just 18, only to see the move fall through and the attacker to become a star at Manchester United and then Madrid.

This time, however, it was the Portuguese icon who got in touch with the Bianconeri, as he sought a way out of the Spanish capital following their Champions League win. While his agent, Jorge Mendes, was in talks with the Bianconeri over Joao Cancelo's move to Turin, the forward made first contact with the Italian champions, leaving them with an easy decision to make.

"I'm happy, very happy," Marotta told Corriere della Serra after landing the five-time Ballon d'Or winner. "The real protagonists of this team are the player himself and the Juventus shareholders.

"It was Cristiano Ronaldo who was the first to believe in this, the first to launch it.He chose Juve, and when we understood that we could seize this opportunity, the shareholders of the club agreed to support the move. I insist, it was a great team game."It all began when we started dealing with Joao Cancelo, who has the same agent of Ronaldo."

The signing has proved an exciting one for Juve fans and figures across the football world. Former Bianconeri and Italy star Alessandro Del Piero hopes Ronaldo can lead his new side to Champions League glory, just as he did United and Madrid. Meanwhile, Brazil icon Pele said he made the "right move" in seeking a "new challenge".

Liverpool open talks to sign £13m Shaqiri from Stoke

Liverpool are hopeful of completing a deal for Stoke City winger Xherdan Shaqiri this month, Goal can confirm.

Jurgen Klopp has identified the Switzerland international as one who can bolster his attacking options, while the presence of a release clause in the 26-year-old's contract makes a deal a financially attractive one.

Goal understands Shaqiri will be available for around £13 million ($17m) following the Potters' relegation from the Premier League, and that the former Bayern Munich man is keen on a move to Anfield.

Shaqiri has spoken publicly of his desire to remain in England , and talks between Liverpool, Stoke and the player's representatives are underway.

Klopp has already added two players - Naby Keita and Fabinho - to his squad this summer, but is aware of the need for further reinforcements if his side are to close the gap to champions Manchester City, and remain competitive in the Champions League too.

Shaqiri would not be seen as someone to come in and start games immediately, though Klopp appreciates the importance of depth across his attacking positions.

Liverpool got lucky last season in that their front three - Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah - remained fit and healthy for the majority of the campaign, but their lack of depth was exposed during the Champions League final, when Salah departed injured.Shaqiri scored eight times for Stoke last season and has made 92 appearances in total since joining from Inter in 2015. He is currently on holiday after representing Switzerland at the World Cup, helping them to the last 16 where they were beaten by Sweden.

Liverpool may be able to sweeten any deal by offering a player on loan. Stoke have enquired about young winger Sheyi Ojo, who scored for the Reds in their pre-season friendly win over Tranmere on Tuesday night, while Klopp must make decisions over the likes of Harry Wilson, Ryan Kent, Marko Grujic, Ben Woodburn and Dominic Solanke, among others.

His side take on League Two outfit Bury on Saturday before a midweek game against Blackburn Rovers. Liverpool then fly to America for a three-game tour, where they will play Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Manchester United in the International Champions Cup. Shaqiri could be signed in time to play a part in that trip.

Klopp, meanwhile, remains keen to add at least one more attacking midfielder to his squad this summer. Liverpool saw a deal for Lyon captain Nabil Fekir break down due to a medical issue last month, but serious alternatives are yet to emerge amid claims from the player's agent that the move remains on the table. Fekir, in any case, is still with France at the World Cup and would not be due to return to action until early-August.

Calls for Liverpool to sign a goalkeeper were intensified after Loris Karius' mistake against Tranmere this week, but the club have made no progress with regards to a move for Alisson Becker, their preferred target. They have no interest in the likes of Nick Pope, Jasper Cillessen, Thomas Strakosha and Jiri Pavlenka, all of whom have been linked of late.
