Happy Benzema targeting 'history' at Real Madrid

Karim Benzema is confident he can put a disappointing individual season behind him to become a key figure in the post-Cristiano Ronaldo era at Real Madrid.

The 30-year-old looked to be a fading force last term as he netted just five La Liga goals and began to face speculation over his future at the Santiago Bernabeu.

But his opening goal in the Champions League final win over Liverpool and the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as head coach appears to have given the former France striker fresh hope of a prominent role in his 10th season at the club.

Reportedly the subject of interest from AC Milan, Benzema says he is squarely focused on bouncing back to his best and spearheading Madrid's push for more success.

"We have to keep winning silverware because the target here is always to win things as a team," the ex-Lyon striker told his club's website."On a personal level, I'll be looking to have a better season than I did last time around and continue to etch my name into the club's history books.

"I couldn't have imagined achieving everything that I have, but I joined this club to win silverware, be a success and achieve a lot of things."I knew that I'd have some tough seasons, but it doesn't matter because this is the best club in the world. I'm really happy."

Benzema also provided an insight into the early stages of the team's transformation under Lopetegui, who was sensationally sacked as Spain coach on the eve of the World Cup.

"We know that Lopetegui is a coach who likes his teams to have the ball and play a possession-based game," the four-time Champions League winner said."He also places great emphasis on working hard when we lose the ball and how we press after we've given possession away."

No Higuain offers from Chelsea or AC Milan, says Juventus chief Marotta

Giuseppe Marotta said there has been "nothing concrete" from Chelsea and AC Milan regarding Gonzalo Higuain, though the Juventus chief executive admitted the striker could be sold following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.Goal understands the Serie A champions are prioritising the sale of the Argentine striker and are hoping to get around £58m ($76m) for him after his two seasons in Turin.

Higuain has been linked with a reunion with former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri at Premier League side Chelsea, while the Argentina international's name has emerged as a possible makeweight in a deal for AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci.

Juve and Milan have already held talks over a potential swap, but Chelsea will have the advantage in talks if they advance on their interests due to Sarri's relationship with the forward.Marotta, meanwhile, revealed the Serie A champions are weighing up their options after Ronaldo's high-profile arrival from Real Madrid left Juve inundated with attackers.

"I won't deny that with the addition of Cristiano Ronaldo we've got a quality attacking department that's a bit crowded," Marotta told Sky Italia."We'll evaluate things with Higuain, but nothing concrete has arrived from Chelsea and Milan.

"He is still an important player for us. Now obviously there is more competition, but he is a professional and we are evaluating his future together with his representatives. We have great respect for him."And talk of Bonucci making a possible return was no surprise for Marotta, who has already spoken to the defender.

"All this was born simply because we met Leonardo, who had just settled in at Milan and we exchanged opinions on the football he was playing there," he added.

"On this occasion he informed us of the great respect Bonucci still has towards Juventus and I perceived the desire for a reunion. It stopped there."Although they may be set to lose one star striker, CEO Marotta says the Bianconeri are aiming for the biggest prize on offer this season.

"With the arrival of Cristiano we want to do well in the Champions League, with the hope that he and his team-mates can give us this great satisfaction."

Ozil, Aubameyang & Bellerin model Arsenal's new third kit

Arsenal have unveiled their third kit for this season - a "modern green" number that comes with a nod to the club's history ingrained.

Hector Bellerin, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Alexandre Lacazette and Petr Cech showed off the new kit while on tour in Singapore. The London side are preparing to begin a new chapter under coach Unai Emery after seeing the end of the Arsene Wenger era.

But the Gunners have paid tribute to the pre-Wenger age with a third kit that resembles their Bluebottle shirt from the 1982/83.The shirt also has a big W dotted across the middle to complement the M that is spread over the away jersey - a tribute to the WM formation the Gunners used in the days of Herbert Chapman.

The shorts and socks, meanwhile, are similar to the shirt with their green base and with the bagdes, logos and sponsors detailed in navy blue.

'Ruthless and brutal!' - Klopp slams 'wrestler' Ramos for Salah challenge

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has broken his silence on Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos following the incident which saw Mohamed Salah suffer a dislocated shoulder during the Champions League final.Salah left the pitch in Kiev in tears after a challenge with Ramos that saw his arm become trapped underneath the Spain centre-back's body.

Ramos was heavily criticised for the calculated nature of the challenge on Liverpool's top goalscorer. He defiantly chose to laugh off the claims he had deliberately set out to injure the Egyptian forward or elbow Loris Karius in a later incident that many cited as the reason behind the goalkeeper's concussion and subsequent errors in the second half of the match.

Klopp, though, did not hold back in his thoughts on Ramos' role in his side's 3-1 defeat to Madrid in May, calling the challenge "ruthless and brutal" before likening it to a move seen more often in wrestling matches.

He also vented his frustrations at Ramos' reaction to the incidents, with Klopp keen to stress that this is far from the first time the Spain skipper has been at the centre of a disciplinary storm."If you watch it back and you are not with Real Madrid then you think it is ruthless and brutal," Klopp told reporters.

"I saw the ref taking charge of big games at the World Cup and nobody really thinks about that later. But in a situation like that somebody needs to judge it better."If VAR is coming then it is a situation where you have to look again. Not to give a red card but to look again and say: ‘What is that?’ It was ruthless.

“I’m not sure it is an experience we will have again – go there and put an elbow to the goalkeeper, put their goalscorer down like a wrestler in midfield and then you win the game. That was the story of the game."Ramos said a lot of things afterwards that I didn’t like. As a person I didn’t like the reactions of him. He was like: ‘Whatever, what do they want? It’s normal.’ No, it is not normal.

"If you put all of the situations of Ramos together then you will see a lot of situations with Ramos. The year before against Juve he was responsible for the red card for [Juan] Cuadrado. Nobody talks about that afterwards.

"It is like we, the world out there, accepts that you use each weapon to win the game. People probably expect that I am the same. I am not.

"We are aggressive but I always use the word ‘legal' as well. Usually if you try something you will get punished. Someone will see it and ban you for four or five weeks. But in this example, no one."This ref should have had the courage to decide that game. In this situation we didn’t get it and, if you write this, people will say I am weak or a bad loser or a whiner. I am not. I accept it. It’s not like I wake up in the morning and think: ‘Ramos!’"

Liverpool are next in action when they face Manchester United in the International Champions Cup in Michigan on Saturday.

Chelsea set to meet with Juventus over moves for Rugani and Higuain

Chelsea and Juventus are set to hold talks on Saturday in Nice as the Blues target moves for a number of the Serie A champions' players.Goal understands Chelsea CEO Marina Granovskaia will meet with Juve sporting director Fabio Paratici while Maurizio Sarri's side prepare to face Inter in the International Champions Cup.

Sarri has targeted moves for a number of Juventus players due to his familiarity with Serie A, having already secured the arrival of Jorginho from Napoli.

A second bid of £45 million ($59m) was lodged for centre-back Daniele Rugani earlier in the week, and Chelsea are hopeful that these talks will allow a breakthrough to be made in their pursuit of the Italy international.

The Blues have already seen a £36m ($47m) bid rejected by the Bianconeri for Rugani but he remains Sarri's primary defensive target with less than two weeks of the transfer window left to run in England.Should Rugani prove unattainable, Chelsea will turn their attentions to his team-mate Mattia Caldara.

The 24-year-old is yet to make an appearance for Massimiliano Allegri's side, having signed for Juve in January 2017 before being loaned back to Atalanta for 18 months in a bid to gain further experience.Caldara has been linked with a move away already this summer, with AC Milan reportedly keen to bring him to San Siro in a deal that would potentially see Leonardo Bonucci move in the opposite direction.

Bonucci has made it clear that he wishes to return to Turin after just one season with the Rossoneri, and as revealed by Goal, they have been exploring a potential swap deal that would involve Gonzalo Higuain.

Argentina international Higuain is surplus to requirements at Juve following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, and Chelsea are hopeful that Saturday's talks could see them jump to the head of the queue in that race.Sarri managed Higuain during his time at Napoli and is keen to bring the former Real Madrid man to west London to spearhead his attack following Alvaro Morata's struggles in 2017-18.

Juventus have prioritised selling Higuain as they look to free up some money to spend in the final weeks of the transfer window, though they would still likely want in excess of €60m (£53.4m/$70m) for their top goalscorer from the last two seasons.

Juventus-linked Darmian determined to leave Manchester United despite defensive injuries

Matteo Darmian has not changed his mind about wanting to leave Manchester United despite regular right-back Antonio Valencia being sidelined with injury.

Valencia and new signing Diogo Dalot have both been out of action on the club's tour of the United States, with Darmian selected against AC Milan in the International Champions Cup.The full-back even wore the captain's armband against his boyhood club in Valencia's absence but Darmian remains determined to leave Old Trafford before the closure of the transfer window.

"I don't think the injury of Antonio is a big injury," Darmian, who is in the final year of his United contract, said."I don't know how long he needs to stay out, but at the moment he is the captain, he's first choice.

"I want to play more regularly. Last season, I didn't play much - that's my objective and my ambition."That's why I spoke with the manager and also with the club about my future."I want to leave but we will see what happens because we don't know."

Juventus and Inter have been linked with Darmian but United manager Jose Mourinho said no offers received for the full-back have been close to the club's valuation. And former Torino defender Darmian sees a return to his homeland as the most likely destination as he sticks to his guns over a United exit, having been restricted to five Premier League starts in 2017-18.

"It's an option. Yes, probably," Darmian said of a possible Serie A switch."We will see what happens. Honestly, I'm waiting. If I stay, I stay and I do what I did up until now. If I go, it is because the offer that another team makes will be good.

"To play for probably the best club in the world is a good thing, and for me, it's an honour to play here and play for Manchester United. But we have to take decisions in our life and this is my decision."

Spalletti confirms Inter interest in Vrsaljko

Inter coach Luciano Spalletti has confirmed his club's interest in Atletico Madrid full-back Sime Vrsaljko.

Rumours persist that the Nerazzurri are nearing a deal for the 26-year-old Croatian, who starred in the World Cup as his country reached the final for the first time in their history.Such a deal could come as a surprise after Vrsaljko extended his contract in February, signing a fresh four-year deal.

But Spalletti has done little to quash the speculation, telling Calciomercato.com: "We like Vrsaljko. The directors are working, certain things will be defined once our preparations begin, when our squad is more settled."As more days pass and we approach the deadline, the situations change.

"We're working on the pitch, so [Piero] Ausilio [sporting director] and [Giovanni] Gardini [chief administrator] are thinking about it. You also know the positions we need covering."Inter have been busy in the transfer market so far this window, bolstering their ranks with the signings of Radja Nainggolan, Lautaro Martinez, and Matteo Politano.

They have also secured the free transfers of Kwadwo Asamoah and Stefan de Vrij from Serie A rivals Juventus and Roma respectively as they gear up for their first Champions League campaign since 2011-12.

Arsenal 5 Paris Saint-Germain 1: Ozil scores on Gunners return

    4EA51C3700000578-6002137-image-a-33_1532782151655.jpg

Mesut Ozil scored on his return to the Arsenal starting XI in an emphatic 5-1 International Champions Cup win over an unfamiliar Paris Saint-Germain side, while Alexandre Lacazette netted a brace.Ozil, who captained the Gunners, has had a difficult couple of months that culminated in him retiring from international football last week after growing tired of perceived mistreatment from the German Football Federation (DFB).

That saga stemmed from a pre-World Cup meeting with controversial Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, but he returned to Arsenal action in successful fashion on Saturday after his country's shock group-stage exit in Russia.Arsenal were dominant for much of the first period, a spell which essentially began with Ozil's 13th-minute opener at the end of a fine move.

A host of chances went begging thereafter, as Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan squandered the best opportunities, and PSG briefly made them pay for their profligacy.Timothy Weah was the inspiration, winning a penalty from Sead Kolasinac, and Christopher Nkunku converted in the 60th minute.

But the Gunners stepped things up again towards the end – Lacazette, who was brought on for Iwobi at the break, scoring twice in quick succession from close range, before Rob Holding and Eddie Nketiah wrapped up an impressive win over coach Unai Emery's former team.

Although PSG's starting XI was packed with young players, they enjoyed a far greater start and almost made the most of their early pressure – Azzeddine Toufiqui sending a curling left-footed effort just wide from 20 yards after a brilliant marauding run from Adrien Rabiot.

Arsenal soon woke up, however, and took PSG's inexperienced defence apart, as Aubameyang latched on to a pass into the right side of the area on the break and squared to Ozil for an easy finish past Gianluigi Buffon. That ushered in a period of control and they almost got a second in the 23rd minute, but Iwobi was denied when one-on-one with Buffon at the end of a slick passing move.

Buffon was again alert just before the break, saving from Mkhitaryan, who probably should have done better.PSG improved after the break and deservedly pulled level with an hour played – Nkunku coolly slotting home a penalty after Weah had been clumsily tripped by Kolasinac.

But they were not level for long, as Emile Smith Rowe – the scorer of a stunner against Atletico Madrid – provided a gorgeous right-wing cross a few moments later on his 18th birthday and Lacazette impressively flicked the ball in off the crossbar.

And Lacazette was decisive again 19 minutes from time, nodding in off the post from the middle of the box following a Holding flick-on.Holding got in on the act in the 87th minute, meeting a corner about 16 yards out and sending a looping header into the top-left corner, before Nketiah rounded off the crushing victory in stoppage time, finishing off a swift break in clinical fashion.

Oblak expects Real Madrid to replace Ronaldo with another star

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak is not getting his hopes up about Real Madrid being slack in the transfer market after losing Cristiano Ronaldo, adamant they will bring in a genuine "star" to take his place.Ronaldo's Madrid departure came as something of a shock after Portugal's participation in the World Cup ended, the forward joining Serie A champions Juventus.

The Ballon d'Or holder followed Zinedine Zidane out of the club in search of a new challenge after helping them to a third successive Champions League title, the coach leaving because he doubted the team's ability to keep winning after seeing them struggle in LaLiga last term.

Madrid ended the domestic season third behind Barcelona and Atletico, and while Ronaldo's departure is a boost to both of their rivals, Oblak is expecting a major signing to be made, with Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Eden Hazard the most regularly linked. When asked if Ronaldo's sale gives Atletico the upper-hand in their rivalry, Oblak told reporters: "Last season we finished in front of Real Madrid.

"Ronaldo is one of the best in history, so Madrid have lost an important player, but I'm sure they will buy another star."They will always have a great team, so it will be difficult to say [who has the upper-hand] before the season starts. We will have to see how the season goes."

Oblak himself was tentatively linked with Liverpool towards the conclusion of last season, though it was swiftly established he has a €100 million (£89m/$116m) release clause in his contract, effectively ending the speculation.

As such, Alisson became the most expensive goalkeeper in history when the Reds agreed a deal with Roma which could reach €72.5m (£65m/$85m) , and Oblak thinks it is a sign that those between the posts are starting to get noticed."Before there wasn't much recognition for goalkeepers," Oblak said. "I think the goalkeeper is important in the team.

"Everything starts from the back and every position is important. The goalkeepers are getting recognition now."

Everton to reject all Pickford offers amid Chelsea links

Everton will reject offers from any club for Jordan Pickford amid reports linking Chelsea with a move for the goalkeeper, Goal understands.

Marco Silva's side are keen to hold onto their prized asset as they aim to do more business themselves in the final two weeks of the transfer window, having already landed Richarlison from Watford and waved goodbye to Davy Klaassen and Ramiro Funes Mori.

Everton's relationship with Chelsea is strained due to the London side's previous approaches for John Stones and Ross Barkley having proved disruptive for the Merseyside club.

The Blues are said to have made the shot-stopper a top target while they run the risk of losing current No.1 Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid, as he pushes for a move to the European champions to be closer to his family in the Spanish capital.Talks for the 26-year-old have stalled as Chelsea want a replacement to come in before sanctioning the sale of their reliable first choice.

However, Pickford is unlikely to be the one to step in for the Belgian, as he only joined the Toffees last year in a £30 million move from Sunderland and still has four years remaining on his contract, but his impressive displays at the World Cup have only increased talk of him heading to a bigger Premier League side.

Alisson was Chelsea's initial top target to replace Courtois but he went on to join Everton's rivals Liverpool in a £65m ($87m) deal from Roma.Chelsea have also been linked with Jack Butland, Kasper Schmeichel and Gianluigi Donnarumma, but a clear option has yet to be determined.

Maurizio Sarri's side have already landed one backup goalkeeper this summer in the form of ex-England No.1 Rob Green and they also landed midfielder Jorginho from Napoli.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are also in talks with Juventus over the potential signing of Gonzalo Higuain, Daniele Rugani and Mattia Caldara.

Barcelona likely to make more signings, says Valverde

Barcelona's summer transfer business is not over, according to coach Ernesto Valverde, who says the Blaugrana are likely to make more signings before the close of the window.

The Liga champions recently announced the capture of Brazilian winger Malcom from Bordeaux, beating Roma to the punch at the last minute.Malcom became the club's third signing of the summer following Arthur Melo and Clement Lenglet's arrivals at Camp Nou.

And while Barca's business so far represents a solid strengthening of the squad, Valverde feels his squad lacks depth in midfield following the exits of Andres Iniesta and Paulinho.

“We're open to any possibility,” the coach told a news conference, “It's true that we've had some big departures in midfield so it's likely that we will make more signings.“We will try to build the most competitive squad possible, keeping in mind that Andres [Iniesta] and Paulinho have left.”

When quizzed on what profile the club are looking for in terms of targets, he said: “It doesn't depend only on me, but on the club and what players are available.“We want players that fit our style. We need people that can generate play through the middle – and if they can get forward into the box, too, even better.”

Despite all the talk of more signings, Valverde is eager to trim the fat from his squad, with Lucas Digne close to Everton and one of five central defenders likely to be moved on.

Firmly in the midst of pre-season, however, the coach has time to run the rule over his fringe players and make an informed decision over who he wants to keep at Camp Nou.

“It's a familiar story for all the teams at this stage of the season,” he said, “There are players coming back from loans, players from the B team and we have to decide [who will stay and who will go].

“We think the B team can help us this year, and, yes, I prefer to have a small squad. As for the players that could go, we will see.“The tour of the United States provides a chance for the players coming back from loans and up from the B team.”

Benfica 1 Juventus 1 (2-4 on penalties): Ferreyra injury mars ICC tie

    4EA69E6200000578-6002759-The_27_year_old-a-30_1532804162584.jpg

A seemingly serious injury to Facundo Ferreyra marred the International Champions Cup match between Benfica and Juventus that the Bianconeri won via a penalty shootout.Jonas hit the post and Mattia Perin saved from Joao Felix to allow Alex Sandro to roll in the winning spot-kick, earning Juve a 4-2 triumph after a 1-1 draw at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday.

But Ferreyra leaving the field on a stretcher wearing a neck brace remained the defining moment of a low-key ICC contest that was lit up by two fantastic second-half finishes.

Benfica's new signing Ferreyra caught team-mate Jardel in a heavy collision that left the former Shakhtar Donetsk striker needing lengthy treatment and he will be a serious doubt for next month's Champions League third qualifying round tie against Fenerbahce.

Serie A champions Juve lacked coherence in their play throughout and Benfica took a deserved lead in the 65th minute, Alex Grimaldo deceiving substitute goalkeeper Perin with a 25-yard free-kick that dramatically dipped under the woodwork.

Juve were without big names including star signing Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina attackers Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain, and it was Luca Clemenza who produced a superb equaliser with just six minutes to play.Alex Sandro then earned Juventus a penalty shoot-out win, with Massimiliano Allegri's side playing Real Madrid in their last ICC meeting, while Benfica take on Lyon.

Ferreyra should have tested Wojciech Szczesny more seriously in the ninth minute when he latched on to a long pass, while Claudio Marchisio fired over a low Joao Cancelo cross at the other end.

Mattia Caldara started for Juve despite reports he could join AC Milan in a deal involving a return for Leonardo Bonucci and his mistake handed Gedson Fernandes a fantastic chance, but the midfielder dragged his shot wide.A long delay for the concerning injury suffered by Ferreyra lowered a sluggish tempo further, the striker carried off on a stretcher after an accidental collision with Jardel in the Benfica box.

Cancelo switched to the left flank at the break and the former Benfica defender almost opened the scoring in the 48th minute, his whipped right-footed curler narrowly clearing the crossbar.Andrea Favilli struck both goals in a 2-0 defeat of Bayern Munich but the forward was denied by goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachodimos at his near post as Juventus moved through the gears.

But it was Benfica who nudged ahead with a goal of the highest quality from Grimaldo midway through the second period.Replacement goalkeeper Perin was left motionless by Grimaldo's whipped hit, which looked certain to rise over the top before the ball somehow dropped under the crossbar.

Medhi Benatia should have headed home Clemenza's cross to level the scores in the 76th minute but the centre-back somehow failed to direct the ball home from just a few yards out.But Clemenza took matters into his own hands with a brilliant late equaliser, the young substitute dancing through a series of challenges before thundering an unstoppable drive home.

Vlachodimos pushed away Alex Sandro's header to force the game to penalties, with Jonas hitting the post with his effort to hand Juventus the advantage.Perin saved with his legs to keep out Felix's strike and Alex Sandro consigned Benfica to defeat after their ICC penalty shoot-out victory against Borussia Dortmund last time out.

But Benfica coach Rui Vitoria will be more concerned about Ferreyra, with Fernandes also limping off in the closing stages.

Real Madrid & Man Utd target Milinkovic-Savic to stay at Lazio, claims Inzaghi

Milan Badelj and Joaquin Correa are set to sign for Lazio according to head coach Simone Inzaghi, who believes in-demand midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic will stay at the club.

Milinkovic-Savic has been linked with a switch to Serie A champions Juventus, with Real Madrid and Manchester United among the other European giants reportedly keen on the Serbia international.

But Inzaghi is keeping €100million-rated (£89m/$116m) Milinkovic-Savic in his plans for the new season, with Badelj set to bolster Lazio's midfield options when he officially signs on a free transfer from Fiorentina.

Lazio are also close to completing a deal reported to be worth €16million for Sevilla winger Correa, who featured in 21 La Liga games last term. But Inzaghi suggested a proposed move for Atalanta's Alejandro Gomez as a replacement for Felipe Anderson, who has joined West Ham, will not happen.

"I asked for Alejandro Gomez as a substitute for Felipe Anderson, then we analysed the situation and we preferred to take Correa, a young player who will give us so much because he boasts physical and technical qualities," Inzaghi told reporters.

"The purchase of Badelj, in this sense, it's important because he's an international football player who has great enthusiasm for having arrived on such a team and is also that player who was missing in the midfield.

"There are many voices around Milinkovic-Savic, he can change the games alone. I spoke with Sergej, he wanted to arrive two days earlier in Auronzo, but I gave him two more days of holiday. I feel calm."Anything could happen. Our desire is to do well as in the last years, we will fight with everyone."

Barcelona and Everton agree €25m Digne fee as move nears

Everton and Barcelona have come to an agreement over a fee for France international left-back Lucas Digne, Goal can confirm. The Toffees have agreed to sign the former Roma and Paris Saint-Germain star for a value between €22 million (£19.5m/$25.6m) and €25m (£22m/$29m) once bonuses are included.

The defender, who turned 25 last week, grew frustrated at Camp Nou last season when his first-team opportunities were limited under new coach Ernesto Valverde, who restricted him to only 20 appearances in total and caused the player to miss out on the opportunity of playing at the World Cup.

His Barcelona career had started promisingly under Luis Enrique, who quit at the end of the 2016-17 season. Valverde’s presence, however, saw Lille youth produce Digne have his playing time dramatically reduced as Jordi Alba became an immovable object in Barca’s system.

It is expected that Digne will replace Leighton Baines at Goodison Park, with the 33-year-old having now played 10 seasons for the Toffees. Barcelona are currently on a pre-season tour of the USA, where they will face Tottenham on Saturday in Los Angeles.By the time they face Roma on Tuesday, though, it is expected that Digne will have flown to Liverpool and completed his move to Everton.

Marco Silva’s club are also working on a deal to sign Colombia international centre-back Yerry Mina, who was one of the revelations of the World Cup, where he scored three times with his national side.Like Digne Mina has struggled to make an impression at Camp Nou under Valverde, featuring only six times in the second half of last term after moving from Palmeiras in January.

With less than a fortnight left in the transfer window, Everton’s progress in bringing players in has been relatively slow, although they secured a deal to sign Richarlison from Watford earlier this week.

Notable players to leave, however, include defender Ramiro Funes Mori, midfielder Davy Klaassen and veteran forward Wayne Rooney. The left-back spot was seen as a particular area of concern with Kieran Tierney, Marvin Plattenhardt, Jordan Lukaku and Dalbert all considered before agreeing terms over Digne.

Ahead of a meeting with Rennes on Saturday in France, Everton have won only one of their five pre-season meetings – a 22-0 success over ATV Irdning. Among their other results is a scoreless draw against Lille, one of Digne’s former clubs.
