Parma 1 Juventus 2: Dogged hosts downed but Ronaldo's wait goes on

Juventus were made to work hard for a 2-1 win at Parma that maintains their perfect start to the Serie A season.

The champions looked on course for a comfortable evening when Mario Mandzukic netted after two minutes, but Parma made life difficult for their esteemed guests until the former Croatia international intervened again to tee up Blaise Matuidi's winner.

Gervinho had drawn Parma level on his full debut and the hosts could have led at the interval, before their momentum waned following the restart. There was still no breakthrough for Juve new boy Cristiano Ronaldo, though, as his barren start to life in Italy continues beyond an international break during which he will miss action for Portugal.

The visitors were quick off the mark, with Mandzukic meeting Juan Cuadrado's pinpoint cross and then beating the recovering Simone Iacoponi to the loose ball to stab into the net.

That sensational start suggested a Juve romp was on the cards, but Leo Stulac's swirling free-kick soon crashed against the crossbar and a Parma equaliser followed before the break.Gervinho was on hand to turn the ball over the line after Roberto Inglese's header, from an enticing Massimo Gobbi delivery, evaded Wojciech Szczesny, who at least prevented Luca Rigoni from completing a first-half turnaround.

But a moment of real quality saw Juve reclaim their lead and ultimately win the match just before the hour-mark as Mandzukic flicked into Matuidi's path and the France international provided a superb finish from a tight angle.

'I knew this season would be difficult' – Mourinho not surprised by United's poor start

Manchester United's poor start has not come as a surprise to Jose Mourinho, who knew it would be a difficult campaign for the Red Devils before their Premier League season got underway.United are already playing catch-up in the Premier League following back-to-back defeats after suffering a demoralising 3-0 loss at home to Tottenham.United manager Mourinho is under increasing pressure having lost twice in three matches as they prepare to travel to Burnley on Sunday.

However, Mourinho – who has cut a frustrated figure after United's failure to meet his transfer demands having only signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and reserve goalkeeper Lee Grant – predicted his team would find it tough this term.

"I said that in the summer before the competition started," said Mourinho. "It's not especially now. Two defeats are two defeats. We still have 35 matches to play. It's not because we lost six points that this is going to change."I knew this was going to be difficult because I knew that last season was going to be very, very difficult."

Asked about a realistic target, Mourinho said: "Win at Burnley. Then win against Watford. That is the target we have."We have matches to play every week and the target is always to win. We know that in the Champions League, we have to play the biggest candidate in Juventus.

"They were always a big candidate but they transformed themselves into the biggest candidate."They don't hide the fact their investment made was really to win the Champions League. But even against that big team, we are going to try to win.

"Last season we had a fantastic start and we won the first three matches. We got nine points from three matches, scoring 10 goals.

"Then we lost a couple of matches. Maybe this time we started with two defeats and who knows if we will have a good run that gives us consecutive victories and consecutive points."

Juventus will help Ronaldo break Serie A duck – Matuidi

Blaise Matuidi insisted Juventus will help Cristiano Ronaldo open his Serie A account after the superstar fired another blank for the Italian champions.Ronaldo has experienced a barren start to life in Serie A following his blockbuster arrival from Real Madrid, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner scoreless in Juve's 2-1 win at Parma on Saturday.

The Portugal captain, his 23 attempts at goal without scoring is the worst tally in Europe's big-five leagues , with Nantes midfielder Valentin Rongier behind him in second with 15 shots.

The 33-year-old forward tallied eight shots against Parma without finding the back of the net but Matuidi – who scored the winner – believes Ronaldo will break his duck."He is a great player and will score eventually, as he's very important for this team," Matuidi told DAZN .

"He was unlucky this evening, but we will help him and he's got plenty of time."He was a little annoyed at not being able to score, but it'll come."Douglas Costa, who came off the bench for his 50th Juve appearance, added: "Cristiano is playing in a new league and understandably he wants to score but he also knows it's the three points that matter most."
