:(West Ham 3 Manchester United 1: Arnautovic crowns another miserable day for Mourinho

    4629446-6221603-image-a-80_1538227384260.jpg

West Ham stormed to a 3-1 win over an abject Manchester United to pile further pressure on Jose Mourinho. The United manager selected Paul Pogba from the off following a week-long soap opera at Old Trafford but Felipe Anderson gave West Ham an early lead with his first Premier League goal.

Things rarely picked up after that setback as Victor Lindelof deflected in Andriy Yarmolenko's shot to double the advantage for Manuel Pellegrini's team two minutes before half-time.

Marko Arnautovic sealed the points after Marcus Rashford briefly gave the visitors hope, meaning more uncomfortable questions await Mourinho, who omitted Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and captain Antonio Valencia from his matchday squad.

A United line-up that looked cautious on paper started in tepid fashion and they were behind in the fifth minute – Anderson's impudent backheel finish coming after Mark Noble released Pablo Zabaleta down the right.

The Brazilian's defensive work left a little more to be desired and he left Arthur Masuaku isolated when Ashley Young roved down the West Ham left, crossing for Romelu Lukaku to head against the post.Masuaku was a touch fortunate not to be penalised for a shove on Scott McTominay in the area and Mourinho's frustrations were compounded when Yarmolenko's strike took a wicked deflection off Victor Lindelof, leaving David de Gea with no chance.

After the break, substitute Rashford played in Young to deliver another delightful cross that Marouane Fellaini met at the back post – forcing Lukasz Fabianski into the save of the match.A sliding Arnautovic almost converted Anderson's pass before the home faithful greeted Pogba's withdrawal in the pantomime style.

When play restarted, Rashford cleverly converted from Luke Shaw's corner but Noble picked out the yawning gap between Chris Smalling and McTominay in the United defence and Arnautovic coolly finished the job 16 minutes from time.

Huddersfield Town 0 Tottenham 2: Kane double tames Terriers

    4630908-0-image-a-30_1538233458514.jpg

Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham warmed up for a Champions League clash against Barcelona with a comfortable 2-0 Premier League win at Huddersfield Town.Kane struck twice in Spurs' 4-0 win in this fixture last season and although Mauricio Pochettino's side could not match that result on Saturday, the striker's first-half double was enough to seal victory.

Spurs were without Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Hugo Lloris due to injury, but Kane stepped up with a header and a penalty to follow his spot-kick in a 2-1 win at Brighton and Hove Albion in their last league fixture.

Huddersfield are bottom of the table with David Wagner's men still waiting for their first home league goal of the season, while Spurs move up to fourth.Kane charged through on goal for the game's first big chance in the 10th minute, but Jonas Lossl was quickly off his line to smother the England captain's attempted chip.

Huddersfield were regularly exposed by long balls from the back and another led to the opening goal, Kane profiting with a header after Lucas Moura fed Kieran Trippier to cross.Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga had to make a fine save low to his left to push away a long-range Chris Lowe drive that swerved dramatically, but Spurs quickly doubled their lead.

Danny Rose went down under a challenge from Florent Hadergjonaj and Kane duly sent Lossl the wrong way from the penalty spot, with Laurent Depoitre unlucky to see a superb volley crash back off the crossbar as Huddersfield sought a response before the break.

Pochettino withdrew Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele at half-time, with an eye on Barca, and Lucas had Spurs' best chance to extend their lead, the Brazilian blazing over the crossbar in the 64th minute.

Newcastle United 0 Leicester City 2: Vardy, Maguire ensure Benitez's barren run goes on

Newcastle United were comprehensively outplayed as their winless start stretched to seven Premier League matches in a worrying 2-0 defeat at home to Leicester City.

Forgiving in both boxes and lacking quality in between, Rafael Benitez's side failed to ask regular questions of the visitors on Mike Ashley's first appearance at St James' Park in 16 months.

Benitez commented ahead of the match that he would welcome Ashley's return and his reasons were perhaps evident in a performance that could well have led the club's owner to conclude reinforcements are required.

Jamie Vardy struck the opener from the spot in the 30th minute following DeAndre Yedlin's panicked handball and Leicester's victory, their sixth in seven competitive meetings with the Magpies, was fittingly sealed with a second-half header from the influential Harry Maguire.Passive for much of the first half, Newcastle were made to regret the two early chances they squandered.

Joselu first dallied over an opening that Maguire's sliding challenge snuffed out, before an unmarked Mohamed Diame headed Christian Atsu's inviting cross past the post.

Maguire was dominant in both boxes and it was his shot that struck Yedlin's raised arms for the penalty that Vardy converted for his third of the campaign.

Newcastle improved to some degree after the interval and, with a result still within reach, Benitez's decision to replace Matt Ritchie in the 65th minute was met with boos that had until then been reserved for Ashley.

Regardless, the result never seemed in jeopardy and Maguire climbed over Ciaran Clark to meet James Maddison's corner in the 73rd minute, giving the in-form Foxes a third straight win in all competitions.

Arsenal 2 Watford 0: Late goals seal Gunners' fifth straight Premier League win

    4632264-6221989-image-a-89_1538236246541.jpg

Arsenal struck twice in the final 10 minutes to see off a spirited Watford 2-0 at Emirates Stadium on Saturday and register a fifth consecutive Premier League win.

Unai Emery's side were second best to the Hornets for much of the second half and were indebted to Premier League debutant Bernd Leno – who replaced the injured Petr Cech on the stroke of half-time – for two fine stops. That gave them the platform to win the game late on as Craig Cathcart's own goal in the 81st minute put them ahead and then Mesut Ozil's strike two minutes later secured all three points.

After an impressive start to the season – which saw them win their opening four games – Watford have now gone three without a win and are in danger of slipping down the Premier League table.

After a lively opening Alexandre Lacazette squandered a golden opportunity in the 15th minute, clipping a tame effort over the onrushing Ben Foster and wide of the post after latching onto Abdoulaye Doucoure's poor headed pass.

Leno wasted little time in making his mark after replacing Cech - who pulled up holding his hamstring after a goal kick - getting down smartly to push Troy Deeney's flicked effort from Roberto Pereyra's free-kick around the past six minutes into the second period.

Lacazette's woes in front of goal continued soon after, skewing his header horribly wide after a sweeping counter attack, before Leno again came to his side's rescue, racing off his line to block Andre Gray's effort.

Substitute Isaac Success clipped agonisingly wide late on before Cathcart turned Alex Iwobi's cross into his own net under pressure from Lacazette.Ozil then sealed the win with a cool finish from Lacazette's cross in the 83rd minute as Emery's men marched on.

Manchester City 2 Brighton and Hove Albion 0: Sterling and Aguero on target for champions

    4630502-6221891-image-a-47_1538232252342.jpg

Manchester City maintained the unbeaten start to their Premier League title defence as Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero sealed a 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Pep Guardiola's men had to be patient before Sterling claimed his fourth goal of the season shortly before the half hour.Brighton's defensive work became increasingly last-ditch from that point and Aguero found the goal his endeavours merited in the 65th minute.

The result lifted City back to the top of the table ahead of the crunch clash between Chelsea and Liverpool at Stamford Bridge later on Saturday.
Leroy Sane was the most consistent threat during a largely listless opening from the champions and it was no surprise to see him to the fore when they broke through.Aguero drove City forward on the counter-attack and released the jet-heeled Germany winger, whose cross was slid home by Sterling.Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan denied Sterling and Fernandinho before the break as City moved through the gears.

Kyle Walker sent a shot skidding wide from a similar distance to the one he scored from against Newcastle United last month and Sane misjudged a header from Bernardo Silva's excellent floated cross.Captain Lewis Dunk produced a sprawling block to deny Aguero in the 58th minute, with Ryan standing firm to repel David Silva's shot in the ensuing scramble.

But there was no stopping City when Aguero barrelled through the midfield and skipped past Dunk's tired challenge. The Argentina striker slid in Sterling, who selflessly supplied a return pass for a tap in.

Fernandinho misjudged a header from a Brighton corner five minutes from time, with the ball striking his arm, but penalty appeals were waved away by referee Lee Mason.

Everton 3 Fulham 0: Sigurdsson, Tosun end winless run

Everton picked up their first Premier League win since August after seeing off Fulham 3-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Second-half goals from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Cenk Tosun secured only a second victory of the league season for the Toffees and ended a run of back-to-back defeats.

The win, which leaves Fulham three points outside the relegation zone, extended Everton's record run of wins at home against Slavisa Jokanovic's side to 22.

Fulham's bright start was not affected by the loss of Timothy Fosu-Mensah to a serious-looking injury eight minutes in, and Andre Schurrle wasted a great chance to put the visitors ahead when he blazed over the bar after being teed up by Ryan Sessegnon.

There was another huge let-off for Everton before half-time, with Sessegnon finding only the crossbar after being picked out in space in the penalty area by Jean Michael Seri.

Frustrations had been building in the Goodison Park stands and they grew among the home fans seven minutes into the second half, when Sigurdsson smacked the bar from 12 yards after Denis Odoi was penalised for a push on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Sigurdsson made amends three minutes later, though. Having released Jonjoe Kenny down the right with a clever pass, the midfielder followed up to intercept a poor clearance and curled a first-time finish into the bottom-left corner with his left foot.Luciano Vietto's heavy touch saw Fulham miss the chance to equalise, and the miss was punished 66 minutes in when substitute Tosun nodded home Theo Walcott's cross from the right.

Sigurdsson netted his second on the break in the closing stages with a composed side-foot finish, via a slight deflection, to seal Everton's first league win since they beat Southampton on August 18.

Barcelona 1 Athletic Bilbao 1: Messi and Munir combine to prevent another defeat

    4632414-6222065-image-a-38_1538236614895.jpg

Barcelona's Lionel Messi set up fellow substitute Munir El Haddadi to rescue a late 1-1 draw at home to Athletic Bilbao, but the reigning champions still dropped points for a third successive LaLiga game.

Ernesto Valverde seemingly had one eye on Wednesday's Champions League trip to Tottenham considering his decision to leave Messi in reserve, but he came on to set up Munir's late equaliser and at least prevent Barca losing a second consecutive match.

Although Barca played some neat football at times in the first half, Athletic posed the greater danger going forward and deservedly went ahead just before the interval through Oscar De Marcos.

Messi finally entered early in the second period and he – like Philippe Coutinho before him – struck the frame of the goal late on, before picking out fellow substitute Munir six minutes from time to secure a share of the spoils.

Athletic looked the bigger threat in the first half, with Inaki Williams sending a dipping half-volley just wide after racing in behind the defence to give Barca their first scare 12 minutes in.Williams troubled again soon after, but he failed to apply the finish under pressure from Arturo Vidal after skipping past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Luis Suarez forced Unai Simon into a save from a tight angle in the 37th minute, but Athletic capitalised a few moments later – De Marcos steering Markel Susaeta's cross in after escaping the attentions of Jordi Alba.Valverde waited nine second-half minutes before introducing Messi and that seemed to boost Barca, with Coutinho striking the crossbar with a volley just past the hour.

Barca's luck looked to have run out when Messi blasted against the post from 12 yards out 13 minutes from the end.But their talisman kept plugging away and found Munir in the 84th minute with a low cross, the forward prodding past Simon to salvage a point.

Nice 0 Paris Saint-Germain 3: Neymar shines as Tuchel's men stay perfect

    wire-4634454-1538243460-956_634x494.jpg

Neymar scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain recorded an eighth consecutive Ligue 1 win under Thomas Tuchel by seeing off 10-man Nice 3-0 at Allianz Riviera. With Angel Di Maria hitting the post in a frantic opening, Neymar - excellent throughout Saturday's encounter - kept his cool to curl in the opener in the 22nd minute.

Christopher Nkunku's 46th-minute effort doubled PSG's lead, with Wylan Cyprien's red card making things easy for Tuchel's side.

And Neymar added a third in second-half stoppage time to extend the leaders' advantage at the top to nine points.Di Maria should have put PSG ahead in the 11th minute, but the post to come to Nice's rescue, while Marquinhos failed to turn home following a goalmouth scramble.

PSG's pressure soon paid off, though, Neymar picking out the bottom-right corner with an exquisite strike from 25 yards.

Neymar was on target again two minutes before the break, only for the goal to be ruled out due to Kylian Mbappe drifting offside.PSG did not have long to wait for their second. Malang Sarr did well to block Mbappe's strike, but Nkunku was on hand to sweep home the rebound.Nice's comeback hopes were ended before the hour – first-half substitute Cyprien picking up a second booking for appearing to swing an elbow at Neymar.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had a goal disallowed as PSG tried for a third, but it took the visitors until stoppage time to wrap things up, Neymar slotting in from Mbappe's square ball to add further gloss to a terrific display.

Juventus 3 Napoli 1: Mandzukic double deals Serie A title rivals a blow

    4634724-6222457-image-a-28_1538244484017.jpg

Mario Mandzukic scored twice as Juventus secured an important 3-1 victory over 10-man Serie A title rivals Napoli at the Allianz Stadium.

A seventh straight win for Massimiliano Allegri's side means they are now six points clear of second-place Napoli – a lead that could be reduced to five on Sunday should Sassuolo continue their fine start to the season by beating AC Milan.

Napoli took an early lead through Dries Mertens, before Cristiano Ronaldo and Mandzukic combined to equalise. The World Cup finalist scored again early in the second half after Ronaldo's shot had cannoned back off the post.

Mario Rui was dismissed in the 58th minute for the visitors before Leonardo Bonucci scored his first goal for the club since returning from Milan in August to seal the win 14 minutes from time.
After Pitor Zielinski hit the upright, Napoli broke the deadlock in the 10th minute by punishing Bonucci's sloppy pass with an incisive move that resulted in Mertens sliding Jose Callejon's cross into an unguarded net.Juve drew level in the 26th minute when Ronaldo turned Elseid Hysaj inside out before whipping a fine cross into Mandzukic, who headed past David Ospina.

Ospina did brilliantly to push Ronaldo's 20-yard strike onto the post four minutes after the restart, but Mandzukic was on hand to slot the rebound home.Napoli's hopes of finding a way back into the game were dealt a huge blow shortly before the hour mark when Mario Rui received a second yellow card for an ugly tackle on Paulo Dybala.

Bonucci prodded home Ronaldo's header off a corner at the back post to ensure Juve claimed yet another maximum haul, but the Portugal star spurned a great opportunity to make the scoreline more emphatic.

Chelsea 1 Liverpool 1: Sturridge stunner rescues point

    4635568-0-image-a-76_1538245972394.jpg

A stunning strike from Daniel Sturridge snatched a 1-1 draw for Liverpool against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.Jurgen Klopp's side looked to be heading for a second defeat to the Blues this week after Eden Hazard struck a brilliant opener, but Sturridge's emphatic effort from distance in the 89th minute rescued a point.

The draw, which comes just three days after Chelsea claimed a 2-1 EFL Cup win at Anfield, means Liverpool's 100 per cent winning record in the Premier League this season ends and they are level on points with leaders Manchester City, behind only on goal difference.

Chelsea sit two points further back after a thrilling encounter, but, like Liverpool, remain unbeaten.Mohamed Salah wasted two early half-chances before Willian was thwarted by Alisson, but Liverpool fell behind for the first time in the league this season 25 minutes in through a stunning Hazard goal.

The Belgium star combined with Olivier Giroud and Mateo Kovacic in the centre-circle, raced onto the midfielder's pass and rifled the ball across Alisson and into the bottom-right corner.

Salah looked to have levelled 32 minutes in after escaping Marcos Alonso and rounding Kepa Arrizabalaga, but the covering Antonio Rudiger stretched to clear the ball off the line.

Kepa denied Sadio Mane with a strong reflex stop in the second half, but Chelsea looked a threat on the break and Alisson denied Hazard one-on-one after a quick free-kick.The disappointing Salah was replaced by Xherdan Shaqiri as Liverpool chased their equaliser, and the Switzerland international promptly side-footed wide with the goal gaping after Andy Robertson had capitalised on Alonso's slip.

Roberto Firmino saw a header hooked off the line by David Luiz as the visitors kept Chelsea pinned back, before Sturridge rescued a result with a curling strike from nearly 30 yards out that left Kepa with no chance.

:(Man Utd are a mess but can't afford to lose Pogba - Scholes

Manchester United are “a mess”, according to Paul Scholes, but their struggles make it imperative that they retain the services of “best player” Paul Pogba. It has been suggested that the Red Devils are reaching a point where something has to give, with talk of in-house squabbles seeing the exit door edge open for at least one high-profile figure.

Pogba, having struggled for consistency since returning to Old Trafford in 2016, and beleaguered boss Jose Mourinho are considered to be the most likely candidates to move on.

Scholes believes that something has to happen, with United having hit a new low during a demoralising display in a 3-1 defeat at West Ham.
He told BT Sport: “This club seems to be in a bit of a mess.

“Whether it’s from above Mourinho, we know he didn’t get the money he wanted in the summer. He’s been given a lot of money already to spend on players, [Victory] Lindelof and [Eric] Bailly especially. It’s early days for people like Fred, you do have to give him time.“It just seems like a war right through the club from Ed Woodward to Mourinho and then Mourinho to his players. The players just look unstable.”

Rio Ferdinand agrees with his former United team-mate, with the public arguments being played out in 2018-19 standing in stark contrast to the era of Sir Alex Ferguson when anybody who crossed the Scot was swiftly shown the door.

“There seems to be mini-wars going on in the changing room, probably above that as well,” said the former defender.“There’s mini wars within the camp. That has to be ironed out, someone within that club has to come in and say get yourselves together and sort it out.

“Back in the day Sir Alex Ferguson would have ironed it out. If players stepped out of line in his eyes, they’re gone. Whether they’re in their prime, they’re gone.David Beckham, Jaap Stam, Roy Keane, Ruud van Nistelrroy. Something’s got to give here.”

Scholes, though, believes that parting with Pogba would only serve to heighten United’s problems, with the World Cup-winning midfielder still the finest player on the club’s books. He responded to Ferdinand’s claims about Ferguson selling top stars by stating: “He [Mourinho] hasn't got those luxuries. When the manager [Ferguson] did get rid of players there was always quality around him.

“The war he’s got now with Pogba is he’s still his best player. What else does he do? Can he let Pogba go? I don’t know if he can.”

Inter 2 Cagliari 0: Martinez opens Serie A account

Lautaro Martinez scored his first Serie A goal and Matteo Politano volleyed in a screamer as Inter battled to a 2-0 home win over Cagliari, although they survived more VAR drama.Argentina attacker Martinez netted a first-half header from a Dalbert cross to set Inter on their way to a fifth win in their last six games in all competitions.

Inter, who named stars including Mauro Icardi, Ivan Perisic and Marcelo Brozovic on the bench, spent much of Saturday's San Siro clash on the back foot but Politano's late goal made sure of the points.

Cagliari, now winless in four Serie A games, could not find a way to break down Luciano Spalletti's resurgent side with Daniele Dessena's second-half strike rightly ruled out for handball. With Icardi on the bench, Martinez started up front and he made an early impact with the opening goal in the 12th minute, heading in a left-wing Dalbert cross.

Samir Handanovic captained Inter in Icardi's absence and the goalkeeper bravely dived at the feet of Leonardo Pavoletti as the striker tried to turn in a Paolo Farago cross, taking a knock to the head but continuing after receiving treatment.

Antonio Candreva had a great chance to make sure of the points in the 62nd minute when he was sent through into the box by Politano, but the Inter winger fired straight at Alessio Cragno.

Cagliari's goalkeeper made another strong save to push away Politano's long-range drive and the visitors seemingly levelled in the 72nd minute. But replays showed Dessena finished with his arm as he bundled a cross over the line, with Inter grateful for VAR again following the chaos at the end of last weekend's 1-0 win at Sampdoria.

And Inter wrapped up their third straight Serie A win in the 89th minute when Politano let fly with a sensational volley from just inside the box, a small deflection giving goalkeeper Cragno no chance.
