This is because deceased was a Police officer and the accused is a Doctor.
How many fatal accidents happen in Sri Lanka for a day. Most of the victims are voiceless villagers or urban dwellers who have no voice.
Get the statistics I am ready to debate how this case became so important. Is it because of a death of Police officer.
Most of the fatal accidents in SL are due to negligence of the driver. Whether it is drunken or not if the person is guilty he should be punished. But do we see any convictions and or any driver going to prison. This is very rare. The conviction rate is very low.
The reason being corruption in Police, incompetence in Police and Attorney General's Department which normally takes more than a year to file charges (indictment ) in High Court.
The court also takes usual time as these are not priority matters.
All these had resulted indiscipline in all the users of the road including drivers, pedestrians etc.
In most of drunkards do not even come to the Police. They go home and later produced to the Police. So no tests are done soon after the accident to ascertain the alcohol level in blood.
See how Private Buses and three wheel drivers use the road. But they are not punished . Who is at fault. Most of the Private bus drivers are drunken in the night , but they were never checked by Police!
This case has become sensational due to death of one Police officer but how many innocent Sri Lankans have died due to sheer negligence of drivers but were were social media pundits at that time. Be sensible, whether the deceased is a Police officer or another it is a valuable human life being wasted due to the negligence of a driver
Have we forgotten ex cricketer who killed a mother and daughter allegedly retruning from a Night Club in the morning! What happened to that case , was he convicted and jailed. No! Has the Police done their job or Attorney General done theirs. Has the Court done its duty. These are the questions that we should ask now , we should not wait till it happens to one of your close relatives or colleagues.
Value of life is same irrespective of social standing. when it comes the punishment it is also same whether to a Doctor or nurse or any other person. Is it reality
