Arsenal 2 Manchester United 0: Aubameyang on the spot as Gunners strike huge top-four blow

    10808494-6792369-image-a-90_1552241089104.jpg

Arsenal struck a potentially significant blow in the race for the Premier League top four with a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.A Granit Xhaka strike and a second-half penalty from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who missed from the spot in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham last week, gave the Gunners three valuable points that lift them into fourth.

The result also ends United's nine-game winning run away from home under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, just four days on from their dramatic Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsenal started positively but should have been behind nine minutes in, when Romelu Lukaku steered Luke Shaw's low cross against the crossbar from six yards out.The Gunners punished that miss three minutes later, when Xhaka's swerving strike from 25 yards out completely bamboozled David de Gea and nestled into the left-hand corner.

Fred struck the base of the post as United sought a quick response, and both Marcus Rashford and Lukaku should have done better after finding space inside the penalty area.

Lukaku was denied by a good Bernd Leno save when Rashford picked him out with a clever pass, and the German was out again to smother the ball at the feet of the England striker as United's pressure grew.

Arsenal made the most of those missed opportunities 21 minutes from time, when Aubameyang sent De Gea the wrong way from the penalty spot after Alexandre Lacazette went to ground under minimal contact from Fred.

Chelsea 1 Wolves 1: Last-gasp Hazard strike rescues Blues

    10807854-6792209-image-a-66_1552238258027.jpg

Eden Hazard's last-gasp strike rescued a 1-1 draw and potentially salvaged Chelsea's top-four ambitions in a lacklustre showing against Wolves on Sunday. The Blues were staring down the barrel of a costly defeat courtesy of Raul Jimenez's textbook counter-attacking goal in the second half.

But Chelsea's genius forward drilled home in injury time to secure a point that meant the momentum garnered from three straight wins over Tottenham, Fulham and Dynamo Kiev was not totally lost.

Maurizio Sarri's side can only be as far as four points adrift of the top four after Manchester United visit Arsenal on Sunday, while Wolves miss out on a first league double over Chelsea since 1974-75.

Chelsea enjoyed a near monopoly in terms of possession in the first half, but clear-cut chances were at a premium.Gonzalo Higuain did get in behind only to be easily foiled from a tight angle by Rui Patricio, while tentative claims for handball after a mis-control from Jimenez in the area fell on deaf ears.

Wolves had not managed an effort on goal let alone on target, but their patience was rewarded with a classic counter for the opener after 56 minutes.Diogo Jota and Jimenez combined brilliantly in midfield before the former had the wherewithal to play in the Mexico striker, whose prodded effort hit Cesar Azpilicueta and squirmed past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

That sparked Chelsea into life and Pedro's dipping try tested Patricio, while Higuain just failed to get a touch from close range from the resulting corner.A diving Patricio kept out Willian's bending effort but, just when it looked like Wolves were home and hosed, Hazard struck.

The Belgium forward – who was otherwise a peripheral figure – was afforded too much space and Chelsea's talisman clinically found the bottom-right corner from 20 yards for his 50th Premier League goal at Stamford Bridge.

Inter 2 SPAL 0: Injury-hit Nerazzurri end winless streak

    10807550-0-image-a-24_1552237504980.jpg

Matteo Politano and Roberto Gagliardini gave an undermanned Inter a 2-0 home win over SPAL as they closed back to within a point of AC Milan.

The Nerazzurri had a goal disallowed and lost two players to injury before winger Politano and midfielder Gagliardini struck in the space of 10 second-half minutes to lift the mood at San Siro.Their quickfire goals ended a three-match winless streak in all competitions and reduced the gap to the third-placed Rossoneri ahead of next weekend's derby.

Inter must first host Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg of an evenly poised Europa League last-16 tie and could do so without Marcelo Brozovic and Miranda after the pair sustained injuries.
The hosts were already without Radja Nainggolan and Ivan Perisic and, during a frustrating first half, Luciano Spalletti must have wished Mauro Icardi was not still exiled over a contract dispute.

Lautaro Martinez threatened regularly and looked to have broken the deadlock when he skilfully fired home just after the half-hour, but a VAR review found the forward to have handled the ball in controlling Kwadwo Asamoah's pass.

Inter's irritation grew as Brozovic limped off with a thigh problem, while Miranda made way at half-time due to a suspected fractured nose.Relief eventually arrived in the form of Politano's clever 67th-minute strike, the 25-year-old swivelling onto Martinez's deflected pass and picking out the bottom-right corner.

And, after suspicions of offside on that goal were dismissed, Inter were able to celebrate a first Serie A victory since February 17 as Gagliardini cushioned Cedric Soares' wayward shot and rifled in the 77th-minute sealer.

Liverpool 4 Burnley 2: Firmino and Mane keep Reds hot on City's heels

    10805268-6791909-image-m-53_1552230889434.jpg

Liverpool fought back from a goal down to claim a 4-2 win over Burnley and move back to within a point of Premier League leaders Manchester City.Pep Guardiola's side eased to a 3-1 victory over Watford on Saturday to turn up the heat on Liverpool, who had drawn four of their previous six league matches.

The pressure was increased when Ashley Westwood scored straight from a corner on Sunday, but Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane each netted twice to secure the comeback, despite a late Johann Gudmundsson goal amid difficult conditions on Merseyside.

Anfield was stunned after only six minutes when Westwood's corner from the left curled all the way into the net, although Alisson was furious it was allowed to stand after claiming he had been blocked by three Burnley players on the line.Liverpool levelled within 13 minutes, though, Firmino tapping in after Tom Heaton made a mess of trying to block Mohamed Salah's low cross from the right.

And it was 2-1 before the half-hour mark, Mane side-footing into the right-hand corner after Adam Lallana did well to block a clearance.Burnley improved after the break, with Dwight McNeil causing problems down the Liverpool right, but the result was put beyond them 67 minutes in when Firmino buried his second into an unguarded net after Salah had failed to capitalise on Heaton's poor goal kick.

Mane should have scored a late fourth when he somehow turned Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross onto the crossbar with the goal at his mercy, but he made amends by rounding Heaton and burying a left-foot finish after Gudmundsson's close-range finish had threatened to make the final few moments anxious.

:)Ronaldo could play until he's 40 - Giggs

Cristiano Ronaldo could play at the highest level until he is 40 years of age, according to former team-mate Ryan Giggs, who reached that milestone for Manchester United.

Ronaldo made a €112 million (£98.5m/$131m) transfer to Juventus last summer and has since celebrated his 34th birthday. However, the record-breaking Portuguese forward is showing few signs of slowing down.

He will be hoping to make it a sixth Champions League title this season – for a third different club – though Juventus have a lot of work to do in order to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their round of 16 clash.

“He is no longer the player that he was when he was at 19, 20 but he has adapted his game,” Giggs told Goal in Johannesburg, South Africa, during the UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour Presented by Heineken.“He went from a winger, who used to beat people, make goals, score goals to now really just an out-and-out goal scorer, and he scores every type of goal, headers, goals in the six-yard box free-kicks and every type of goal.

“He is also the best professional I have played with. The way he looked after himself, not only in training but also away from the pitch. The way that he eats, the way that he conducts himself."So, I’m not surprised that he is still playing and still at the top of his game.“You still have to have that hunger, desire and dedication to go out and train and look after yourself - eat the right way, not drinking alcohol, getting enough sleep and enjoying it.

“Ronaldo, if you look at him, he still looks after himself. So, if he still has that hunger, that desire and enjoying it like I said, he can still go until 40 I think.”

Ronaldo was a team-mate of Giggs in the Manchester United team when they won the 2008 Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson on penalties against Chelsea in Moscow.

They were both back in action the following season but Barcelona under Pep Guardiola proved too strong for United, just as they did a couple of seasons later when Giggs was on the losing side again.

"We would have been the first team to regain the Champions League which would have been special,” Giggs said. “That was probably the most disappointing game of my career. We didn't play well. We didn't turn up. I was really disappointed.

“In 2011, sometimes you just have to hold your hand up; we were up against a great team. It was very difficult for us... we still made it difficult for them, but it was of those times, probably the only time or a handful of times in my career, where we were up against a better team.

"I would have liked to have won more. Of course, we were in four finals - we got beaten twice by Barcelona; probably the greatest team I have played against...Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Pique - really top players in a top team. So, we would have liked to have won it a lot more, but it's a difficult trophy to win. I'm just happy I won it twice."Giggs admits that it’s impossible to plan for the talents of Lionel Messi and that the only thing United could do in both finals was try to restrict the number of times the Argentine No. 10 received the ball.

“I don’t think you can plan to play against Messi,” he said. "What we tried to do was stop the ball from getting to Messi. So, if we could stop the ball from getting to Messi, then he couldn’t hurt us. But of course, it is very difficult.“In that game, he had a free role where he could go wherever on the pitch, and you have Xavi, Iniesta on the pitch, you have to stop them as well, that’s the problem that we had. They had a great team, but to stop Messi is very difficult.

“Him [Messi] and Cristiano Ronaldo are probably on par, it just depends who you think is the best. Obviously, Ronaldo has won something internationally, his played in Portugal, England, Spain and now Italy. That is the difference between him and Messi.

“Then you look at Messi and he is doing things that no other player has done. He is scoring goals, making goals and they have both won so much in their career. So, there’s not much between them.”

Wales manager Giggs first tasted success in the 1999 final against Bayern Munich during a memorable season when United became one of only six teams to complete a treble.

“When you win it in 1999, I was 26 or 27 and you think 'okay this is the first of many finals at least', maybe winning it, but it wasn't until nine years later where we got to the final,” Giggs said.

"And it was different because it was against Chelsea; someone from your own league and, again, it was different because it went to penalties. It was a tough final in Moscow, against a very good team, but we managed to come out winners.”

Mata hoping to hand Man Utd fitness boost after being forced to watch 'magical' nights from afar

Juan Mata is hoping to hand Manchester United a fitness boost “soon”, with the Spaniard missing out on “magical” nights while nursing a hamstring injury. The World Cup winner suffered an untimely knock during an eventful Premier League meeting with Liverpool on February 24.

That contest also saw Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard forced from the field, while Marcus Rashford had to manage his way through an issue of his own.

Mata has been forced to sit out United’s last four games across all competitions as a result of his ailment, but the 30-year-old claims he is making positive progress in his recovery.

A man who continues to head towards free agency while stuck on the sidelines posted on his personal blog: “It is has been another different week, without being able to play, but there are reasons to be optimistic.“On Friday I was able to put in some work out on a pitch again and my recovery is progressing as hoped. Hopefully I can rejoin the team soon.

“Thank you for your messages. I’m going to keep doing everything I can to be back fit as soon as possible.”With Mata unavailable, United suffered a first Premier League defeat under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday as they went down 2-0 at Arsenal.

That defeat has halted the Red Devils’ charge somewhat in an ongoing bid for a top-four finish, but they have been flying of late and can still call upon the memories of a number of domestic victories and a stunning Champions League triumph away at Paris Saint-Germain.

Mata added on recent performances: “I watched the game at the Emirates at home. A defeat that wasn’t desired but has to be played down. I believe that we deserved more against Arsenal.

“In the second half, in particular, we started to look for the equaliser, but once they scored their penalty the task ahead was a lot tougher. It has to be remembered that we were playing against a great team at their own ground, but I really think that we deserved better than a 2-0 loss.

“It resulted in our first defeat with Ole in domestic competition [Premier League and FA Cup], where we had amassed 15 matches unbeaten. Despite this disappointment, we continue moving forward with the motivation to get back to winning ways, and we do so with confidence.

“To finish talking about last week, obviously we have to discuss Paris. It is something difficult to explain with just words. A historic night. To come back from 2-0 down is tough, but to do so against an opponent like PSG is even more difficult.

“This magical night represented the greatness of Manchester United and it will be, without doubt, remembered forever in the history of our club. We’re already looking forward to playing in the quarter-finals.”

The last eight of a different competition is next on the agenda for United, with an FA Cup quarter-final clash with Wolves set to be taken in at Molineux on Saturday.

Barcelona ready to step up bid to sign Ajax star De Ligt

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is preparing to step up his bid to bring Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt to Camp Nou, Goal understands.

The man at the helm in Catalunya has already conceded that the Dutchman’s “name is on the table” as summer transfer plans are pieced together. At just 19 years of age, but already a senior Netherlands international and captain of his club side, De Ligt is considered to be a useful addition for the present and future.

Barca are, however, aware that they are far from his only suitors.Liverpool have been credited with holding an interest in pairing the teenager with his fellow countryman Virgil van Dijk at Anfield.

Goal has also previously revealed that Manchester City and Juventus are closely monitoring events in Amsterdam, with the Premier League and Serie A title holders forever in the market for top talent. With competition for a prized signature building, Barcelona acknowledge that they need to act fast.

They already have a deal in place which will see Frenkie de Jong trade the Eredivisie for La Liga in the next transfer window, with a €75 million (£65m/$85m) agreement set to be pushed through. It would likely require a similar fee in order to land the current holder of the prestigious Golden Boy award.

Barca’s technical secretary, Eric Abidal, has already met with De Ligt to sound him out on a switch. Initial talks were held in November, but the situation has progressed considerably since then. With De Jong on board, Barca want another addition tied up in April.

Goal understands that Bartomeu is ready to take the lead in discussions and get things over the line.He has dealt with De Light’s agent, Mino Raiola, in the past and the professional relationship between Barca and Ajax is considered to be good.

The Dutch giants have never stood in the way of any player that wants to further himself outside of their control and they are aware that De Ligt will move on at some stage. Marc Overmars, the club’s director of football, has already admitted as much.

Barca now believe that De Ligt is open to the idea of joining close friend De Jong in Catalunya. The intention is to act quickly and take advantage of a situation seemingly working in their favour.Goal understands that De Ligt will be acquired despite the need to move defensive options out at Camp Nou.

Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet are established members of the fold, but questions remain over the long-term fitness of World Cup winner Samuel Umtiti.Barcelona also recently signed Toulouse youngster Jean-Clair Todibo, while Jeison Murillo has not convinced during a loan from Valencia.

Movement is to be expected over the coming months, with there a determination on the part of Bartomeu to ensure that the comings and goings include De Ligt linking up with Ernesto Valverde’s squad.
