Inter 0 Eintracht Frankfurt 1 (0-1 agg): Jovic sends Nerazzurri crashing out

    11004500-6810803-image-a-1_1552598062961.jpg

Inter's Europa League campaign came to a lacklustre end as Luka Jovic's early strike secured Eintracht Frankfurt's progression into the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win.Kevin Trapp had been Frankfurt's hero with his penalty save in the goalless first leg and, without a recognised striker to call on, Luciano Spalletti's Inter side were toothless throughout Thursday's meeting.

Jovic showed Inter – still without Mauro Icardi, who has not played since being stripped of the captaincy in mid-February – what they were missing with a composed finish that paved the way for a dominant Frankfurt display at San Siro.

Sebastien Haller hit the woodwork prior to Jovic's strike and Frankfurt would have had more if not for fine work from Samir Handanovic and Milan Skriniar as Inter, who face AC Milan in a huge Serie A clash on Sunday, went out with a whimper.Any doubts over Frankfurt's approach to the contest were put aside after four minutes – Haller hitting the crossbar after Handanovic had kept out Mijat Gacinovic's effort.

Inter failed to heed that warning, though, and Frankfurt had the lead a minute later when Jovic capitalised on Stefan de Vrij's misjudgement and lofted a delicate finish over Handanovic.

Haller looked to have made it 2-0 before the half hour, but the offside flag came to Inter's rescue before the striker and Gacinovic were denied in the same move by Handanovic's superb double save.Jovic could have doubled his tally after the restart, only to slip at the vital moment, while Skriniar made a crucial challenge to deny Gacinovic a free shot at goal.

But, despite Jovic heading straight at Handanovic late on, Frankfurt were not made to pay for their profligacy, speculative efforts from Antonio Candreva and Skriniar the most Inter could muster as their European hopes were limply extinguished.

Arsenal 3 Rennes 0 (4-3 agg): Aubameyang brace sends Gunners through

    11005954-6810707-image-a-39_1552601243588.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a brace to send Arsenal into the quarter-finals of the Europa League, their 3-0 home win securing a 4-3 aggregate victory against Rennes.

With the Ligue 1 side leading 3-1 from the first leg, Aubameyang and Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored in the first 15 minutes of Thursday's return to draw Arsenal level on aggregate.

Rennes had chances to snatch a last-eight spot at Emirates Stadium on Thursday, with M'Baye Niang cracking a strike against the post at 3-3, but Aubameyang struck again in the 72nd minute.

Only one side in Europa League knockout history had previously successfully overturned a 3-1 first-leg defeat - Fulham downing Serie A giants Juventus in 2009-10 - but Arsenal moved into the quarters, where they could face London rivals Chelsea.

Arsenal needed a fast start and they got one, opening the scoring in the fifth minute when Maitland-Niles and Aaron Ramsey combined down the right channel to tee up Aubameyang for a simple close-range finish.

And the Gunners were soon on level terms in the tie, Maitland-Niles arriving at the back post to steer home a downward header from Aubameyang's cross, Rennes having paused for an offside flag that did not come.

But Arsenal's tempo slipped and a run from Hatem Ben Arfa - an outcast under current Gunners boss Unai Emery at Paris Saint-Germain - ended with a tame shot at Petr Cech.

A buoyed Rennes then hit the post after the restart, Niang beating former Rennes goalkeeper Cech but not the woodwork after Shkodran Mustafi gave the ball away near his own box.

Substitute Alex Iwobi rifled wide from the edge of the penalty area as Arsenal tried to settle the tie before Aubameyang came up with what proved the decisive goal in the 72nd minute.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan sent Sead Kolasinac clear into space on the left wing to deliver a low cross and Aubameyang was there to tuck home, celebrating the goal by wearing a Black Panther mask.

Dynamo Kiev 0 Chelsea 5 (0-8 agg): Blues into quarter-finals after Giroud treble

    10996702-0-image-a-26_1552587144629.jpg

Chelsea cruised into the Europa League quarter-finals as Olivier Giroud's hat-trick helped secure a resounding 5-0 win over Dynamo Kiev at the Olympic Stadium on Thursday.

The Blues travelled to Ukraine with a commanding 3-0 lead from the first leg in London a week ago and any faint hopes that Alyaksandr Khatskevich's side had of clawing their way back into the tie were extinguished by Giroud's fifth-minute opener. The Frenchman added a second shortly after the half-hour mark before Marcos Alonso tapped in a third just before the interval.

Giroud completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute and Callum Hudson-Odoi added a fifth 12 minutes from time as Maurizio Sarri's side made it four wins from their last five games in all competitions.
Fresh from his call-up to the France squad earlier on Thursday, Giroud got Chelsea up and running when Willian's corner was deflected into his path six yards out and the 32-year-old had the simple task of steering home.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was denied by a fine Denys Boyko save soon after before Giroud grabbed his second in the 33rd minute by applying a superb finishing touch to Alonso's cross from 12 yards.Provider then turned scorer on the stroke of half-time when Alonso prodded in from close-range after smart play down the right by Hudson-Odoi.

Serhiy Sydorchuk was denied by Kepa Arrizabalaga and the post in quick succession after the restart before Giroud brought up his hat-trick just before the hour with a neat header from Willian's free-kick.

Not long after Alonso crashed a free-kick against the crossbar, the impressive Hudson-Odoi sealed a memorable away day by collecting Giroud's pass and clipping past Boyko.

Man Utd facing potential Champions League fixture reverse due to standing below City

Manchester United could see a Premier League standing below Manchester City force them into reversing the order of their fixtures in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Two arch-rivals are currently waiting to discover who they will be paired with in the last eight of Europe’s elite club competition.

It could be that they are drawn against each other and a two-legged derby contest in the latter stages of a European tournament would certainly generate plenty of excitement.

If they are kept apart, though, then there are scheduling issues to take into account.United and City cannot, due to policing demands, play at home on the same night or on back-to-back evenings. With that in mind, contingency plans have been put in place by UEFA.

Were the Red Devils and their neighbours to be placed in the same side of the draw, then City would – having taken the Premier League title when finishing above United last season – get preferential treatment and be granted the right to stick with their original schedule. Those at Old Trafford would be forced to flip the order of their quarter-final encounters.

An explanatory statement released by UEFA read: “Following a decision made by the relevant local authorities, Manchester City FC and Manchester United FC cannot play at home on the same night, nor on consecutive nights.

“Should both clubs be drawn within the same sequence (home or away), the team having finished lower in the domestic league the previous season – in this case Manchester United FC - will be reversed in accordance with the UEFA Club Competitions Committee principles.

“The match schedule for the quarter-finals (including a potential reversal involving Manchester United FC) will be communicated to all parties at approximately 12:45 CET on Friday 15 March.

“In accordance with paragraph 21.01(b) of the UEFA Champions League regulations, the UEFA administration will determine which matches will be played on Tuesday, which matches on Wednesday.

“The calendar for the semi-finals (including a potential reversal involving Manchester United FC, for the same reasons, if both clubs from Manchester are still remaining in the competition) will be communicated to all parties on 18 April 2019, following the return legs of the quarter-finals.”

While there remains the potential for a continental derby between Manchester’s heavyweight neighbours, there is also the chance that all-Premier League ties could be pulled out of the hat.United and City may end up avoiding each other, but familiar foes in the form of Liverpool and Tottenham could still lie in wait.

Outside of the English contingent, Barcelona, Ajax, Porto and Juventus make up the rest of the quarter-final line-up.

Isco: Zidane can lead Real Madrid to victory again

Real Madrid midfielder Isco paid tribute to head coach Zinedine Zidane for returning despite the Spanish giants facing "tough" times.

Zidane cemented his Madrid legacy during a glittering 28-month reign that began in January 2016 and saw him lift three Champions League titles and a La Liga crown.

The Frenchman sensationally walked away from the Santiago Bernabeu in May 2018 and president Florentino Perez has since sacked two head coaches in nine months during an underwhelming season.

The Champions League holders were humiliated 4-1 at home against Ajax to end their bid for a fourth straight European title, and they have fallen 12 points off the pace in LaLiga. Zidane begins his second spell as coach on Saturday against Celta Vigo. With Zidane already established as an icon in Madrid, Isco believes the 46-year-old deserves even more recognition for pledging to rebuild the golden empire which has collapsed in his absence.

"We all know him," Isco said."As a player he was amazing, as a coach he has won everything."It is fantastic for everyone to have him back at Real Madrid. And all the credit for him being back now, when time is tough.

"He loves Real Madrid and hopefully he will lead us again to victory."
Isco has gone through a difficult time at Madrid since Zidane's departure. Although he featured regularly during the short reign of the Frenchman's successor Julen Lopetegui, the Spain international's involvement dropped when Santiago Solari took over.Solari suggested Isco needed to work harder in training last month and then criticised the midfielder's fitness just days before he was relieved of his duties.

Following his early-season injury problems and omissions under Solari, he has been limited to just 16 appearances in La Liga and four in the Champions League this term.

Emery backs Arsenal to 'do something important' after booking Europa League quarter-final spot

Unai Emery believes Arsenal can "do something important" after reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League thanks to a comeback against Rennes.

The Ligue 1 side built a 3-1 lead in last week's opening leg but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang recorded two goals and an assist in Thursday's return at Emirates Stadium to send the Gunners through 4-3 on aggregate. That 3-0 victory followed a 2-0 home win against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, with Emery's men inflicting the first domestic defeat of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's temporary spell in charge.

Arsenal are fourth in the Premier League table, holding the final Champions League qualification place, although triumphing in the Europa League offers another potential route back into the continent's elite.

And with Arsenal showing more consistency following the turbulent early months of his reign after replacing Arsene Wenger, Emery feels his team are on the right track after a sixth straight home victory in all competitions.

"For us, today and Sunday we were competitive. I think it's good confidence for us to feel that," Emery told a news conference."After, I want to take to take better control with the ball and with possession. Against United and today we lost the ball a bit.

"We are going to continue working next week, we are going to Dubai. We have good possibilities in the next month to do something important."We can be proud today. Very difficult week, United on Sunday and Rennes today. Today we played very consistent, being competitive without the ball and serious defensively.

"I missed us being a bit more controlled with the ball, but they left a lot of attacking players in the final third which gave us space to attack them. Our match was competitive, we did well today."

Premier League clubs make up four of the Champions League quarter-finalists with London rivals Chelsea joining the Gunners in the Europa League's last eight.
Emery led Sevilla to three consecutive Europa League titles but the Spaniard is unsure whether Arsenal can be considered favourites to lift the trophy in Baku in May.

"These two matches have been very difficult," Emery added. "Today, Sevilla are out, Inter are out. Every team is now important and it's going to be very difficult."The Champions League and Europa League have different moments, sometimes Spanish clubs, English clubs [do well].

"A domestic league like here [the Premier League], we have six teams playing for the top four."I said to the players this competition is exciting not just because it gets in the Champions League, but also it's a title."

Arsenal return to action at home to Newcastle United on April 1.

Lukaku an injury doubt for Wolves FA Cup tie as Lingard returns to training

Romelu Lukaku is an injury doubt for Manchester United's trip to Wolves in the FA Cup quarter-finals, according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Belgium international has been in scintillating form for the Red Devils over the last month, scoring six goals in his last four appearances across all competitions.United have enjoyed a resurgence in 2019 under the stewardship of caretaker boss Solskjaer, winning 14 of his 18 matches in charge.

Their momentum was stalled somewhat last time out though, as Arsenal managed to end the Norweigian's unbeaten Premier League record with a 2-0 win at Emirates Stadium.

Lukaku started that match and he was expected to retain his place in United's line up at Molineux on Saturday, but Solskjaer has revealed a foot injury may see him sidelined. He also revealed that Jesse Lingard has made his return to training, following a hamstring issue which has kept him out of action since February 24.

Solskjaer gave an update on Lukaku's fitness in a press conference on Friday, saying: "He's had a sore foot this week and he’s being assessed, so hopefully he’ll get through today."Phil Jones is back, there have been so many players out, Anthony [Martial] is back, Ander [Herrera] has been training, Jesse [Lingard] has been training and we’ve got a decision to make tomorrow on who’s match fit.."

The Red Devils have suffered an injury crisis of late, with a number of senior players picking up injuries which has seen Solskjaer's squad stretched to the limit.

Alexis Sanchez is the superstar currently facing the longest spell on the sidelines, after sustaining knee ligament damage against Southampton in February.

The Chile international is not expected to return to action until April, but Solskjaer has offered a positive update on his recovery progress, stating he is expected back at the training ground this weekend."He's [Sanchez] coming back on Sunday, he's not been on grass yet. He's been seeing his people in Barcelona, but he's a few weeks away yet."

Asked whether he believes Sanchez can rediscover his best form upon his return, he added: "I hope so. You can never be 100 per cent sure but Alexis is such a determined lad, he loves football and is doing everything he can to get back and show his best side.

United will be hopeful of continuing the quest for silverware this term with a win against Wolves , but the seventh-place Premier League outfit will represent a stern test for Solskjaer's side.Securing a semi-final berth in this year's FA Cup would help to restore confidence within the squad after last week's defeat to Arsenal, with a huge run of fixtures on the horizon.

The Red Devils are fighting for a place in the Premier League's top four and they still have realistic ambitions of winning the Champions League, with the draw for the last eight of this year's competition set to take place on Friday morning.

Champions League quarter-final draw: Man Utd face Barcelona, City tackle Tottenham & Liverpool land Porto

    8kuXi2R.jpg

Manchester United will face Lionel Messi and Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League quarter-finals, while Tottenham take on Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Elsewhere, Liverpool have landed Porto in the last eight and Juventus will be looking for more magic from Cristiano Ronaldo against Ajax. There was a good chance, with four sides still in the competition, that an all-English affair would be put in place.

    rZUE0jd.jpg

City and Spurs came out of the hat together and will need no introduction to one another as they prepare to lock horns in pursuit of European glory.
Pep Guardiola is looking to lead the Blues to a first Champions League crown, having previously claimed the trophy on two occasions with Barcelona.

The mercurial talents of Messi helped him to those successes and the Argentine will be looking for the fifth triumph of his remarkable career in 2019.That quest must go through Old Trafford after seeing Barca paired with United.

The Red Devils had initially been pencilled in to travel to Camp Nou for the first leg of a heavyweight contest, but that will now be staged in Manchester due to the need for a fixture swap. With City also drawn second in their meeting with Spurs, two near neighbours cannot be at home on the same night or on back-to-back evenings.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will, therefore, welcome Messi and Co to Old Trafford before looking to finish the job and book a semi-final berth in Catalunya – with the former United striker returning to the scene of his 1999 Treble-winning exploits.

Liverpool will also be looking to reach that stage having suffered final heartache against Real Madrid last season. The Reds overcame Bayern Munich in the last 16 and will be feeling confident heading into a two-legged tie with Porto.

Juventus, meanwhile, know that they can call upon the services of five-time winner Ronaldo in their ongoing pursuit of a first European Cup win since 1996.

Their opponents the last time they lifted an iconic piece of silverware were Ajax – who they defeated on penalties at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The Dutch giants have been something of a surprise package in this season’s competition, with the notable scalp of Real Madrid – fresh from three successive triumphs – claimed in the previous round.

While his former employers proved to be no match for the men from Amsterdam, Ronaldo will be seeking to add to the hat-tricks heroics which saw him single-handedly down Atletico Madrid when Juve are reunited with Eredivisie opponents.

If the Portuguese can inspire more progress for the Bianconeri, there will be no meeting for him with eternal rival Messi in the semi-finals.The draw for that stage has already determined that the victors in Juve’s meeting with Ajax will take on Tottenham or Manchester City in the last four.

That leaves Manchester United or Barcelona to take on Liverpool or Porto in the second semi, with a place in a Madrid showpiece at Wanda Metropolitano on June 1 up for grabs.

Europa League quarter-final draw: Arsenal up against Napoli as Chelsea land Slavia Prague

    11031546-0-image-a-8_1552651785845.jpg

Arsenal have been handed the toughest of their possible Europa League quarter-final draws against Napoli, while Chelsea will take on Slavia Prague.Elsewhere, there is an all La Liga affair between Valencia and Villarreal and an intriguing clash which pitches Benfica against Eintracht Frankfurt. The tie of the round, though, was the first one out of the hat.

Unai Emery proved to be something of a specialist in this competition during his time in charge of Sevilla, claiming a hat-trick of successes.

He would, however, have been hoping to see current charges Arsenal avoid Napoli.A notable scalp will now need to be secured if the Gunners are to remain on course in Europe and go at least one better than their semi-final showing from 2018.

    11032368-6813443-image-a-16_1552653096123.jpg

Serie A opponents would also have preferred to avoid a trip to north London, but that is what they will be making in the first leg of a heavyweight showdown.Arsenal will be at Emirates Stadium for that contest as the order of their fixtures has been reversed.

That is because Chelsea were also drawn as the initial away side in their meeting with Slavia Prague. Two London neighbours cannot compete at home on the same day and, as FA Cup holders, the Blues from Stamford Bridge have been given preference.

Maurizio Sarri will be hoping that, in his first season at the helm, Chelsea will have the job done before turning out in front of their own supporters – with his side yet to taste defeat in this season’s Europa League.

The same can be said for Villarreal, who are now readying themselves for a meeting with familiar foes.Valencia edged their way past Krasnodar in the last 16 but will not have far to travel when taking on domestic rivals in the last eight.

The final fixture in the quarter-finals will see Eintracht Frankfurt seeking to prolong their impressive run.The Bundesliga side disposed of Italian heavyweights Inter to reach this point, with a notable 1-0 victory taken from a trip to San Siro.

Eintracht’s next opponents, Benfica, had to go the distance against Dinamo Zagreb before snatching goals in the 94th and 105th minutes to progress 3-1 on aggregate after extra-time.If the Portuguese clear the next hurdle put in front of them, they will then face either Slavia Prague or Chelsea in the semi-finals.

A potential Premier League derby date has been avoid in the last four, with Arsenal or Napoli due to take on Villarreal or Valencia. All of those still involved in the competition are hoping to make it to the final in Baku on May 29.

Spain drop Isco & Saul as Luis Enrique oversees shake-up ahead of Euro 2020 qualifiers

Luis Enrique has omitted Isco and Saul Niguez from his latest Spain squad, opting to bring in plenty of new faces ahead of March fixtures against Norway and Malta.

The former Barcelona boss has made a number of surprising changes to his 23-man squad, handing Getafe striker Jaime Mata and Real Betis midfielder Sergio Canales their first call-ups to the international stage.

Sevilla defender Sergi Gomez and Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz are also in line for their first Spain caps after being included, while Valencia midfielder Dani Parejo and Espanyol central defender Mario Hermoso will be hoping to earn their second appearances.

Isco has been left out after dismal last few months at Real Madrid which saw him slip way down the pecking order at the club under Santiago Solari.

Zinedine Zidane was re-appointed at Santiago Bernabeu in Solari's stead on Monday and he is expected to restore Isco to the first team, but he has not seen enough playing time recently to make Luis Enrique's final selection.

Another surprise name to be left at home is Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul, who has been a fixture in Diego Simeone's side this season. His Atletico team-mate Koke also failed to make the cut, along with Diego Costa, who is still struggling with fitness issues.

Spain will be hoping to get their European Championship's qualifying campaign off to a good start against Norway on March 23, before making the trip to Malta three days later.La Roja won the competition in both 2008 and 2012, with a 2010 World Cup triumph wedged in between, but their success has dried up in recent years.

Vincente del Bosque stepped down as head coach after Spain were knocked out of Euro 2016 in the last 16 by Italy, while Fernando Hierro could only guide his country to the same stage at the World Cup two years later.

Goalkeepers: David de Gea, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Pau Lopez.
Defenders: Jose Gaya, Jordi Alba, Juan Bernat, Mario Hermoso, Inigo Martinez, Sergio Ramos, Sergi Gomez, Jesus Navas, Sergi Roberto.
Midfielders: Sergio Busquets, Rodri Hernandez, Dani Ceballos, Fabian Ruiz, Sergio Canales, Dani Parejo.
Strikers: Alvaro Morata, Rodrigo Moreno, Marco Asensio, Iker Muniain, Jaime Mata.

'He resigned by text message' - Scholes decision shocks Oldham owner as Solskjaer invites him to Man Utd

Oldham Athletic owner Abdallah Lemsagam revealed his shock after head coach Paul Scholes 'resigned by text message', with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer offering to sit down with the former Man United manager to discuss his departure.

Scholes stepped down as Latics manager on Thursday after just seven matches in charge of the first team, insisting he was "unable to operate as intended" in the role. The Man United great was in charge for a grand total of 31 days at Boundary Park, leaving with a record of one win, three draws and three losses.

Oldham chief Lemsagam has responded to Scholes' claims in a post on the club's official website, insisting the 44-year-old failed to "raise any concerns" with senior staff."I am disappointed by Paul’s decision to resign and surprised by the reasons he has given in his statement," said Lemsagam.

"Both myself and the staff at the club gave Paul all the support and autonomy that he asked for. I personally was always supportive of any decisions Paul made or consulted me on reassuring him that he was the man in charge.

"I continued to encourage him despite the results and reassured him that his job was secure. I was content to remain in League Two for this season and working with the team we have for the remainder of this season is important."He did not raise any concerns at all about the team or any other matters informally or formally, prior to his resignation. He gave n

"Management is a difficult job and both myself and everyone at the club would have worked with Paul to find solutions, had we been given the chance. I personally believed that he would be the manager to take us forward this season and next and I know many of you felt the same.

"As a club, we wish him well again and thank him for his contribution."Man United caretaker boss Solskjaer has also weighed in on Scholes' brief stint at Oldham, backing his former colleague and inviting him to Old Trafford to vent his grievances.

The Norwegian, who is currently preparing his side for a FA Cup quarterfinal against Wolves on Saturday, stated in a press conference: "He’s probably got his reasons why he left, so, you’ve gotta ask him, he’s invited here if he wants to come and have a little chat about it, we’ve texted and it didn’t work out, that’s just management."

'It's not like we were sh*t!' - Solskjaer defends Man Utd display in Arsenal defeat

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hit back at criticism of his side's performance in defeat to Arsenal, claiming those who called his side "sh*t" are wrong.

The Gunners inflicted a first Premier League defeat on Solskjaer since he took over from Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford as they ran out 2-0 winners at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Solskjaer, who had previously also not lost an away game since becoming interim boss at Old Trafford, was criticised for his tactics in north London while some claimed his players seemed tired following their dramatic Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain five days earlier.

But Solskjaer has hit back at claims that his side put in an underwhelming display, telling a press conference: "You’re always measured on results but we played a good game against Arsenal.

"We have played so much worse and won games and that’s the strange thing when you’re a manager. You can look behind the result and say that was a good performance that didn’t get what it deserved.

"It’s so strange, the Arsenal one, very disappointed in the result and it hurts more than anything. But we can’t look at the performance and say we were sh*t because we weren’t, to be honest and blunt. We weren’t. We played well."The Red Devils are looking to bounce back from that disappointment when they travel to Wolves in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Man Utd have reached the final of the competition twice in the last three years, beating Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium in Louis van Gaal's final game in charge in 2016 before Mourinho's side lost to Chelsea in 2018.

It remains one of two trophies the current squad remain in contention for following their progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and Solskjaer is now focused on ending the season positively and pushing for silverware.

"We’ve done well. We’ve given ourselves the chance to be in and amongst the top four, we’re in the quarter-finals of both the FA Cup and Champions League.

"We’ve been on a good run, but it's not squeaky bum time like the gaffer [Sir Alex Ferguson] used to say but it tightens up in April and May at Manchester United."We narrow the focus and it’s now about winning trophies and making use of the squad."Man Utd's results under Solskjaer have led to overwhelming support for him to be given the manager's job on a permanent basis.

Former team-mate Gary Neville has insisted that the Norwegian should be offered a long-term contract during the upcoming international break, but Solskjaer insists he is not looking any further than the end of the season."I didn’t have a schedule, I had until May to do whatever I could with the team, playing style and mood, and everything has been going well.

"But then again football kicks you in the teeth sometimes and there’s always the next day. If we get through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup then I’ll have a nice few days back home."

Man Utd targeting top-three finish & FA Cup final - Romero

Manchester United are looking to secure a top-three finish in the Premier League and give themselves a shot at FA Cup glory, says Sergio Romero.

The Red Devils were in danger of seeing their 2018-19 campaign collapse after stumbling out of the blocks under Jose Mourinho. They have, however, enjoyed a welcome upturn in fortune under the guidance of interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and can now look to end the season on a high.

That means doing more than merely securing Champions League qualification – with the club still involved in that competition this term – and putting themselves in a position to challenge for major silverware.

Ahead of a FA Cup quarter-final clash with Wolves on Saturday, Argentine goalkeeper Romero told the club’s official website of the ambition in Solskjaer’s squad: “It’s a really exciting period coming up. We’re battling on all fronts.“We’re battling for the top four but if we can make the top three that would be even better.“The draw is just around the corner for the Champions League and we can’t wait to find out who we’ll play.

“And the FA Cup is a really important trophy and it’s a massive match coming up this Saturday at Wolves, but we’ll go there and give everything we’ve got. We’ll have our travelling supporters behind us and it’s all about trying to progress in this fantastic competition.”

Romero added on United’s cup charge which is set to take them back out on the road to Molineux: “We had difficult games away at Arsenal and Chelsea but we managed to perform well in those games.

“We know it’s another difficult trip down to Wolves but we’re confident and we know this trophy is very important for us.“We want to be involved in the very last day that this competition is taking place, ie. get to the final and give ourselves the chance to lift a trophy and make everyone at the club and of course our fans very happy.”

Solskjaer will be hoping to secure a trophy in his ongoing bid to land a permanent contract at Old Trafford, with Romero conceding that the Norwegian has made a stunning impact with United. He said: “We knew we had our own responsibilities to help change things around and I think that first match, the big 5-1 victory away at Cardiff, was very important.

Kovac: Bayern can't compete with Europe's elite clubs

Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovac has claimed that his side cannot compete financially with Europe's elite clubs - particularly the Premier League.Bayern were knocked out in the round of 16 of the Champions League for the first time in nearly a decade at the hands of Liverpool, and their fellow Bundesliga clubs - Borussia Dortmund and Schalke - also fell at the same hurdle.

And following the 3-1 defeat in Munich, Kovac complained about the magnitude of his counterpart's spending in comparison to his own, and highlighted the financial muscle of Premier League as a concern for clubs in Germany.

"Money doesn't always win, but Jurgen Klopp spent €500 million in the last four years," Kovac said. "Even we as the Bundesliga forerunners did not do that. It's just an advantage [for them].

"We must now continue with our planning and reflect about how we want to set ourselves up for the new season. We must not lie to ourselves. It's not by accident that three German clubs are eliminated by three English clubs."For the top stars, it's just more appealing to go to the Premier League than to Bundesliga."

He went on to explain that, as a result, he feels German football must focus on giving young players a chance in order to find success without having to spend huge amounts on marquee signings. "If we want to make up for this, we must identify young and talented players early on.

"The basic question is: Do we want to play in that game or not and then [we must] calculate on other teams running away from us."In the past two windows, Kovac acquired Leon Goretzka on a free transfer from Schalke and Canadian winger Alphonso Davies, 18, from the Vancouver Whitecaps.

And the future planning Kovac mentions has clearly already started, with Bayern having wrapped up a deal for Benjamin Pavard to join at the end of the season from Stuttgart, and the 22-year-old World Cup-winning right-back will be joined by teenage striking sensation Jann-Fiete Arp the following season.

'I'm not ready to just be a back-up' - Giroud demands more minutes after Kiev hat-trick

Olivier Giroud insists that he does not want to be considered as merely a back-up striker for Chelsea as his fine form in Europe continued. The France international scored a perfect hat-trick as the Blues booked their place in the Europa League quarter-finals with a 5-0 win over Dynamo Kiev on Thursday.

Giroud is now the top scorer in the competition with nine goals to his name heading into the last eight, but he has scored just once in the Premier League under Maurizio Sarri.

He has not started a league match for the Stamford Bridge outfit since December 30, with Gonzalo Higuain having arrived in west London to replace Alvaro Morata in the January transfer window.Giroud, though, is not happy playing second fiddle and insists his form in continental competition is proof that he has what it takes to be given more opportunities domestically.

"No chance [I will deputise for another striker]," Giroud told reporters. "I’m a competitor. I have been through a lot of tough moments in my career. I want to enjoy playing my football after winning the World Cup last summer."I want to take maximum pleasure on the pitch. That’s why when I play I try to enjoy the game as much as I can. I want to play every single game and to be happy on the pitch. But I am not picking the team. The manager makes some choices.

"I play in the Europa League, and I am happy to help the team to go through the stages, step by step. The target is clearly to win it. The Premier League is another thing you know? I’m 32, but I’m still young. I feel very well physically."When I do the tests on the treadmill I have to say that I have one of the best tests [at the club]. Physically I feel very good. I have the motivation to carry on.

"Some of the boys asked me why I didn’t retire after the World Cup with the national team, but I’m still hungry, and I know how much I will miss football after my career. I want more and more. I think I have a few nice years in front of me."I don’t know how many, my body will tell me. I still feel as fresh as when I was in my twenties. I remember all of my hat-tricks, but this one was important because it was an international game in the Europa League.

"I scored a hat-trick for Arsenal against Olympiacos when they needed to win by three goals, and we won 3-0. But this was the best day for Chelsea. When I have the opportunity to play and finish well the work of my team-mates, I do it with great pleasure."

Chelsea are one of six English teams to have qualified for the quarter-finals of either the Europa League or Champions League this season, with the Blues themselves set to face Slavia Prague in April following Friday's draw. And Giroud is hopeful that a Premier League representative will reign supreme on the continent this season, though he is not ruling out departing English shores in the future.

"It is very nice for the Premier League to have four teams in the quarter finals of the Champions League and it’s well deserved. It’s true that we play a lot of games in the year, maybe more than any other championship.

"The league is very tough, very demanding in a physical way and it’s intensity. But I’m happy that English clubs are back on the European scene. Hopefully one of them will win it."For me the Premier League is great, it is my favourite league. Now we don’t know about the future – who can say? We’ll see."

Sarri's side return to action on Sunday when they travel to Goodison Park to take on Everton and look to close the gap on the Premier League's top four in the process.

'Premier League crown is for the people' - Klopp not concerned by his Liverpool legacy

Jurgen Klopp is not concerned with his Liverpool legacy, insisting a Premier League title victory would be 'for the people'.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss has steered the Reds to successive top-four finishes in the Premier League but has come up short in three finals, including last season's Champions League showpiece against Real Madrid.Liverpool also lost out to Manchester City and Sevilla in the finals of the EFL Cup and Europa League respectively in the German's first season in charge.

The Reds are still fighting for glory on two fronts this season - they have been drawn to play Porto in the Champions League quarter-finals - but Klopp is unconcerned by suggestions he must win silverware to be remembered as a success.

"You can't imagine how less interested I am in that," he told the media when asked about leaving a legacy at Liverpool."I'm never all about myself in the job. My job is to do whatever I can to help the team be as successful as possible, not searching to be remembered in 50 years when people speak about me.

"I love what I do, I think I have a fantastic team out there and that's all that I need to be a happy person."I respect a lot the desire of all the people, and all the players, and I can be part of that dream, but it's not for me at the end, it's for the people."

He added: "I'm not interested in who judges me. God will judge me one day. What other people say, I couldn’t be less interested."After beating Bayern Munich in European action in midweek, Liverpool return to Premier League duty on Sunday with a trip to Fulham.

However, knowing Manchester City will have a game in hand due to their FA Cup quarter-final against Swansea City this weekend, Klopp does not believe taking over top spot with a win at Craven Cottage will have any impact on their rivals in the title race."Being ahead of City itself is not that important, but we want to win the game at the weekend," he said during his pre-match media conference on Friday.

"The game in hand of City is Manchester United, I think, so for sure not an easy one. But it [the title race] is not decided at the weekend. All the stories will be written, but we will accept them because it means we won the game.

"The only thing we think about is winning the game. We haven’t struggled psychologically because we are not ahead of them any more."If there is something to celebrate at the end of the season we will be the first involved in that. Until then, let’s play football."
