Last year I lost a Macbook despatched from Apple. Really, I did not notice that this one was not delivered for more than 3 months- simply because I receive about 100 or more deliveries every month.
Subsequently I raised a non delivery with Apple, they contacted DHL and sent me the proof of delivery receipt. I didn't identify the signature on it. We have hundreds of staff and and I checked with everyone - it was a fake signature.
Two weeks later the courier guys called me , apologised and said I am correct. When they checked the delivery truck GPS records, they could confirm that the truck never visited my office on the day that the receipt was signed. They duly arranged with Apple to send another unit to me.
So they can trace much more than standard e-tracking.
