AFAIK transiting through HKG for SriLankan passports DOES require a Visa - whether flying CX or NOT - just to stay in Transit area.
Just check with the airline to confirm. They will tell you the correct information.
Call Cathay Pacific reservations help line.

Check the following links.. Official HKG Government sites. Looks like any transit is not mentioned though SriLankans require a Visa.
The column heading says
"Always require VISA, except in direct transit by air and when the person does not leave the airport transit area"
- However, it's better to confirm with CX first.
Also things can be different if you have an Australian Entry Visa.

Best is to ask the airline... Ultimately it's their responsibility. They wouldn't probably board him if a transit visa is required.
But according to the HK Govt site the heading says.. for SriLankans.

Always require VISA, EXCEPT in direct transit by air and when the person does not leave the airport transit area.
