Maybe, but it seems to me that we're handling the situation infinitely better than Ecuador despite being economically inferior and having a higher population density

They do have Oil & Gas. Yet another mismanaged country. Also Education plays an important part, really the lack of it.
Schooling is not compulsory, and also not free, although there are many cheap schools, a lot of people end up being uneducated. Probably around 60% or more. That's one reason for downfall.
Also they have tourism... It's the Gateway to the Galapagos islands!
