With the latest political drama unfolding infront of our eyes, this is my two cents on the matter. Let's look at the bigger picture, shall we?
Lately, Sanga's name is being mentioned among the candidates for the next presidenty of ICC. Can he go all the way? Yes, he's the current President of MCC, one of the most prestigious roles in cricket, and a past legend of the game. He's the first non British citizen to be given the honour of being appointed as the President of MCC in the club's illustrious history of over 230 years, and is a man loved by every single cricket fan across the globe for his class as a gentleman, and cricketing ability. In short, he has no reason whatsoever to not be a favourite for the position.
Let's assume Sangakkara gets into the office. What happens next?
The cricket Mafia of Sri Lanka is run by Thilanga Sumathipala. The current President of SLC, Shammi Perera is a puppet of Sumathipala and the whole cricketing community knows this. The SLC presidency is given out by a vote among the club leaders in the country, and it's a well known fact that most these 'clubs' were allegedly created for the sake of the voting power they hold in SLC elections, which in turn favours Sumathipala and Co. Sumathipala has managed to keep SLC in a choke hold by abusing this system for well over a decade.
IF (and this is a big if), Sanga becomes the President of ICC, he's bound to look into SLC affairs more closely. This means Sumathipala and Co cannot do as they please, and they might even face consequences for the crimes they've done in the past involving Sri Lankan cricket.
This effectively means the cancerous hold Sumathipala's cricket Mafia has over Sri Lankan Cricket, will come to an end.
We've seen Mahela, Sanga and other big names speak up against the building of the Homagama stadium. We've seen Mahela's, Sanga's and Aravinda's cricket reformation proposals being tossed in the trash by the Sumathipala Mafia. We've seen other nations use the expertise of our legends and honour them (Mahela, a two time IPL winner as coach, Sanga, the President of MCC, Murali being acclaimed as the most valuable test player of the 21st century just last week, among many others), while Sumathipala and Co tries to keep these men as far away as possible from SLC.
And now, we see Mahindananda and Sumathipala dragging the names of Sanga, Mahela, Aravinda through the mud. To make sure their names are blacklisted in the world cricket scene. To make sure they do not have any power over Sri Lankan Cricket. Just a couple days back, Sumathipala literally stated that Sanga isn't fit for the ICC presidency. Do you think anyone who has nothing to worry about, would openly campaign against their countryman running for the most powerful position in world cricket?
Wake the fuck up. This is another political 'game' they're playing with people who gave us so much joy as children, and as adults. These guys gave so much to our country. Are we just gonna sit by and watch while they go through this? Are we that spineless as a nation
