Barcelona 2-8 Bayern Munich: Bundesliga champions obliterate dismal Blaugrana to book semi-final spot

    1WkGJG5.jpg

Bayern Munich made a grand statement in the Champions League as they hammered Barcelona 8-2 to book their semi-final place in remarkable fashion.

Lionel Messi and his team-mates were swept aside by the dominant Bundesliga champions in a chaotic first half, with Philippe Coutinho then coming on to deal further blows to his parent club in the closing stages.

Thomas Muller's sublime strike got things started and, although David Alaba's own goal drew Barca level, Ivan Perisic and Serge Gnabry had Bayern 3-1 up by the 27th minute.Muller's second piled further misery on Barca – who conceded four goals in the first half of a Champions League match for the first time – and while Luis Suarez responded after the break, Bayern had more to give.

Joshua Kimmich restored a three-goal cushion with a goal set up by the brilliance of Alphonso Davies, before Coutinho set up Robert Lewandowski and helped himself to a double within the space of seven minutes to compound the misery of the club that owns him.

Manchester City 1-3 Lyon: Guardiola's side dumped out again after contentious Dembele strike

    53KHjKP.jpg

Manchester City again came unstuck against Lyon in the Champions League as a controversial 3-1 defeat saw Pep Guardiola miss out on a semi-final against his former club Bayern Munich.

Lyon won away to City in the 2018-19 group stage - also drawing at home - and they again had the tournament favourites' number in Lisbon on Saturday.

Maxwel Cornet scored in both prior meetings between the sides and was on target once more midway through the first half as City struggled to get to grips with the five-man defence named by Guardiola.

That formation was ditched before the hour mark and Kevin De Bruyne equalised, but substitute Moussa Dembele restored Lyon's lead following a contentious counter-attack with 11 minutes remaining and then added another after an Ederson error.

Raheem Sterling remarkably missed an open goal between Dembele's decisive strikes as City suffered further European misery in stunning fashion.

Manchester City midfielder De Bruyne wins Premier League Player of the Season 2019-20

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has won the Premier League Player of the Season award for the 2019-20 campaign, despite Liverpool running away with the title.

The Belgium international playmaker matched the record for assists in a single campaign by providing 20, equalling a mark set by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry in the 2002-03 campaign, while he also scored 13 goals. Furthermore, he created the most chances and had the most goal involvements of any player in the division.

The fans recognised his achievement by nominating him as the league’s outstanding player in a public vote, in which he saw off competition from Liverpool trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane, plus Southampton striker Danny Ings, Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope and Leicester forward Jamie Vardy.

De Bruyne takes the crown from Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk, while Anfield favourite Mohamed Salah won it for the 2017-18 campaign.

The 29-year-old started the season in strong fashion, with eight assists and two goals in the opening seven rounds of fixtures, where he was involved in at least one goal in each with the exception of a shock 3-2 loss to Norwich – a match he played only 33 minutes of after he was named as a substitute.

While he enjoyed his richest vain of form at the start of the season and over the festive period, when he scored three and created three more in a blistering four-game burst, he was a consistent provider of excellence for Pep Guardiola’s side throughout the campaign, finishing on a high as he scored two and laid on another in a 5-0 win over the Canaries.

City, however, finished a distant second in the league behind champions Liverpool, who romped to the crown by an 18-point margin. The last league-winning player to win the gong was N'Golo Kante of Chelsea in 2016-17.

The news of the award will come as little consolation to the 29-year-old, who was a member of the City squad that surprisingly crashed out of the Champions League to Lyon at the quarter-final stage following a 3-1 defeat. De Bruyne netted in that game but his contribution was not significant enough to stop Guardiola’s side being on the wrong end of a monumental upset.

In all competitions during the 2019-20 season, De Bruyne featured 48 times for Guardiola’s men, scoring 16 times and laying on another 23.He has been with City for five campaigns and now has 57 goals and 89 assists in 222 appearances for the club.

Sevilla 2-1 Manchester United: De Jong fires Sevilla into Europa League final

Dutch striker Luuk de Jong came off the bench to shatter Manchester United's Europa League hopes, sending Sevilla through to the final.

Luuk de Jong fired Sevilla into another Europa League final as the LaLiga side won 2-1 in Cologne to shatter Manchester United's hopes of silverware.
Winners of this competition in 2014, 2015 and 2016, Sevilla took another stride towards glory after resisting heavy pressure from United in this semi-final.
