Is free Education/Health worth it?

ලoකාවෙදි ළමය බඩට ආව දවසෙ ඉදන් කවද හරි මැරෙනකන් සියලු සෞඛය වියදම් නොමිලේ, අධයාපනය් නොමිලේ සුබසාධන වියදම් අරව මේව බොහොම හොදයි..

But now we have to question whether these things are really worth it. Education is sub-standard. Even though we praise the free education system in Sri Lanka and point out a very few success stories, reality is that it's a complete failure. Health service is of no quality as well.

We should privatize these fields in order to improve the standards and there's no other way around it.

I disagree. Many developed countries except US being a notable exception have good healthcare and education.

Dropping healthcare and education just to save the taxes wouldn't help at all, because that difference is not going to make any difference. Back in 2009, when the war was finished, that saved money didn't really make it into infrastructure.


What needs to be done is to discourage the private sector and develop the public sector.

Despite what you think, many public schools and universities are better than most developing countries that charge money anyway. Healthcare is sub-par, yes, but it gets the lives saved for the lower level families.

If you drop free healthcare and education, it will only help the rich. The poor don't pay income taxes anyway, and VAT is the only thing they do.

Dude it's being proven over and over again that with a huge public sector, you can't develop and improve the living standards of a country. It's the private sector spending which gives the life to the economy. When the government is involved in these matters, quality will never improve and it will deteriorate further.

US healthcare is not as bad as the media or the uninformed people portrays it to be. As long as you pay for good insurance, they get the most advanced best health care possible. True that the costs are high compared to other nations, but as long as you have a decent job and insurance you get the best possible service anywhere in the world.

Law of the Jungle. Poor will get poorer if something happened to him/her. Will have to live in lifetime debt. At least in Sri Lankan healthcare poor people can go to hospitals for free and people who have a decent job can go to Asiri/Lanka Hospitals etc and have personal/company insurance covers. Every level of society will get the benefit. I still prefer Sri Lankan healthcare despite the quality of the government hospitals.

රටක් දියුණු වෙන්න මිනිස්සුන්ට හොද අද්‍යාපනයක් දෙන්න ඕනේ. ඒක නිසා නිදහස් අද්‍යාපනය (ෆ්‍රී නෙමේ) තියන එක වටිනවා A Levels වත් ඉවර වෙනකන්. විශ්වවිද්‍යාල අද්‍යාපනය සදහා රජය දරන වියදම ඒ ළමයි රැකියාවක් කරන කාලයක සුළුවෙන් හරි ආපහු අය කරගෙන ඒ සල්ලි උසස් අද්‍යාපනය දියුණු කරන්න යොදා ගන්න ඕනේ.

සෞඛය පහසුකම් ලංකාවේ සැලකිය යුතු තරම් හොදයි. සල්ලි නැති දුප්පත් මනුස්සයන්ට තමයි ඔකේ අගේ තේරෙන්නේ.

අද්‍යාපනයක් සහ හොද සෞඛයක් නැති මිනිස්සු එක්ක රටක් ඉස්සරහට යන්න අමාරුයි.

Your observations are valid... Ii have always commented here that the SL education system was ruined by that idiot Baduddin Mohammed, who was the Education Minister during Sirimavo time. Remember the days of Parippu and Rice from the Moon....
No subsequent government or the stupid "Curriculum Development Board" fixed it.... (Probably it should have been aptly named as "Lack of Curriculum Development Board")
The quality of teaching has fallen, the kids have only superficial knowledge on many subjects without a proper foundation in place. I often wonder why do we run schools. Every weekend when I see the number of children on the road when tuition classes finish, it's more or less like a wesak procession...
Why don't we close down the damned schools and rent them to tuition masters? Many parents spend huge amounts of money on tuition. Are the kids any smarter? NO.
We need a whole revamp on education. It's very easy to eliminate the "Parrot" like learning and weed out the clever ones. Sadly the clever educators in the country already left for overseas.......

PS: BTW I fully endorse free education and healthcare. We really need it in place.
