so what caused it and how did it progress from stat to end?I will tell you what it was like in the '70s. Each house had a ration book and depending on the number of people in each house we were allocated a list of essential food items that we could buy from a Sathosa outlet. You had to stand in a queue for hours to get your rations, then from the sathosa queue, you had to go to the bakery queue to buy your bread. We couldn't buy any nice clothes, the only materials available were cotton, you have to buy the material and go to a tailor to get your clothes made. Dasa store on Galle Rd Colpity once had a supply of Tetron Cotton material which was a luxury, we had to run and stand in a queue and get it before they ran out of stock. When someone came from overseas it was unbelievable to get a small toy or some chocolates. This was a long time ago and I can't remember everything, but I can tell you it was absolute misery to live in Ceylon, as it was called at that time.
