Yes for people born after 1977. You need to take used Tyres , batteries , bulbs etc to get a new one. There were no Butter, Cheese or Milk (Milk board and Highland could not supply even 5% of requirements.
There were restrictions on rice transport (absurd) we could not get rice from our own paddy transport to our houses in our car!! (you could get permit but this is again very time consuming and inefficient method!!) Why do you need such restrictions to transport few Kgs? Not commecial quantities.
Rice was not served in hotels /restaurents /eataries at least two days of the week. (so you need to eat Bread? again you had queues for Bread!!
No Enghlish Books (all Penguine Classics, Text books ), No foreign study (except ICMA (now CIMA) and very few even then very difficutl to pay in foregin currency
Not even a Calculator (later Upali build one 80s), Pencils, and even proper instrument box(we got Metalix but the quality was very low)
We had very few exports apart from Tea , Rubber and Copra (such as Noritake )
But I salute her foresight in to NAM and having 6th summit in Colombo(where Mrshall Tito, Col Gadaffi, Kenneth Kaunda, Anwar Sadath, last not least Mrs. Indira Ghandi (who was offered Temple Trees to stay!!). This summit brought us economic benifits as she asked Gulf countries to give us trade(employment) instead of Aid(at that time oil price was record high)
So her economic policies were a failure and that is a fact. 1977 did not open the economy but we did import substitution policy under Ronie De Mel (Read the thesis of Prof Jagath Wickremasinghe (former SLIC chairman under CBK and my lecturer at that time). His phd is on import substitution of Sri Lanka in 1977 which was partially success.(much better than Mrs. B's policies)
She was not a corrupt politician though UNP deprived her civic rights on some thing (I do not know the facts ). Under LRC lot of her lands were taken over by govt!!(opposite to what is happening now)
Chairman Mao's policies were also changed and there were some corruption allegation agaisnt his wife too! (she was prosecuted)
