House cat skulls have gotten significantly smaller over the last 10,000 years, and so have their brains.

New research has shown that thousands of years of human dependence has caused the cat brains to shrink. They have compared domesticated cats with two of their closest wild ancestors, African (Felis lybica) and European wildcats (Felis silvestris). The team found that cranium size — and therefore brain size — in domesticated cats has shrunk significantly over the past 10,000 years or so compared with their wild ancestors.

This doesn't necessarily mean that your tabby is dumber than a wildcat. But, according to one hypothesis, it shows that prioritizing tameness in domesticated animals may have inadvertently changed the ways those animals' brains develop, the researchers said. These changes likely begin when an animal is still an embryo and just beginning to develop its neural crest cells — a special type of cell unique to vertebrates, which plays a key role in the development of the nervous system, among other things.

They say - "Selection for tameness in the domestication of animals may have caused a downregulation in the migration and proliferation of neural crest cells, leading to decreased excitability and fear," the researchers wrote in their study. "However, this downregulation may also cause correlated changes to morphology, stress response and brain size."

"Changes to cranial volume have been well documented across [domesticated] species, including sheep, rabbits, dogs and many more," the researchers wrote.

Understanding this not only shines a light on some of the developmental changes that domestication incurs on wild animals, but also raises concerns about wild species that are "threatened by hybridization with domestic animals," the researchers concluded.

PS: If the cats could speak, most probably it might say there are 69 lakhs without any brains. So what? :P

    cats are stupid anyway.
Cats are not that stupid... Their skill set is different that of dogs. Dogs Have the Most Neurons, Though Not the Largest Brain: There's a Trade-Off between Body Mass and Number of Neurons in the Cerebral Cortex of Large Carnivoran Species. Dogs have closer to 530 million neurons, compared to the 250 million of cats. In fact, dogs have the most neurons of any carnivore, even though they didn't have the largest brains.
(A Human has about 86 billion of these - the cerebral cortex alone has about 16 billion neurons)

A cat brain though small, occupies about 0.9 percent of their body mass, compared to 1.2 percent for the average dog. In fact, a cat’s complex cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for information processing, contains more neurons than that of dogs. This is the area of the brain that interprets information, language, rational decision making, and complex problem solving.

PS: But there could be stupid cats just like some of the stupids around us. :P

Really? never knew that! When it comes to cats, I can go to any extent to put dogs over cats. If I have to disregard science, I'll do it happily. Call me stupid I don't care :P Personally I think dogs are million times better.

It depends.. Didn't I write that the skill set is different? You cannot really just compare two species. It's like asking the question whether a spanner or a screwdriver is better. Doesn't make much of a sense ... is it? It depends on the circumstances - what it's used for.
Each species has evolved in a specific way which enables them to solve problems that are most critical to their survival and continued reproduction. Cats are good at their hunting skills probably. You cannot compare a cat climbing a tree against a dog. So dogs are not million times better. It's our perception. Each species have their own skills and limitations.
One instance where dogs fare better than cats is the taste. Cats cannot taste sweetness. Dogs can. Cats lack the receptor for sweetness. :oo:

Just take care of all of them because we are humans. That's our responsibility as sapient beings.

If the same principle applies to all domesticated animals, are dogs brain shrinking too? Likewise, the human brain should have the same impact due to the development of tools? Surely there should be other factors impact in the development of the brain not explained in this particular research?

No one is sure.. but there are studies that show that we have reached the highest point and now on the decline. The average IQ keeps on falling.
Take SriLanka for instance... We are now at alarming levels of low IQ. Probably the 69 lakhs contribute to this partly. :P
Some believe that it could be because lower-IQ families are having more children - "Dysgenic Fertility" is the correct term.
