@imhotep, have you heard anything about this?
It was in the news... She's the first woman. There were two other previous instances. Two previous patients, They were referred to as the "Berlin patient,” and and “The London patient.” They received adult stem cell transplants in 2008 and 2016, respectively. The Berlin patient since passed away from cancer—though his HIV stayed in remission.

This one is a bit different because it's a new new method that involved umbilical cord blood. Not bone marrow. Umbilical cord stem cells also do not need to be matched as closely to the recipient as bone marrow cells do. This partial matching paves the way to find a donor much easily.

This particular woman was diagnosed with HIV in 2013. Later in 2017 she was diagnosed with leukemia. In a procedure known as a haplo-cord transplant, she was given cord blood from a partially matched donor to treat her cancer. A close relative also provided her with blood transfusion.
After the umbilical cord blood transplant, they are then given additional adult stem cells. This is because the cord blood cell yield is not sufficient to beat the cancer.
Another three years later the doctors discontinued the HIV treatment but so far HIV did not resurface. It's hard to say whether it can be replicated it worked for now.

PS: Also read and watch the video on my old post just over an year ago - how the CCR5-Delta32 mutation is linked to HIV immunity.
