IT industry protest on 8th April (#SAVESRILANKA)
Liberty Roundabout, Colombo 03
Code of conduct
From now on:
1. Invite your industry friends and colleagues.
2. Create your own placard. Limit the content of placards to ones in this list (link).
3. The IT Industry Protest is by IT Professionals and not thugs and hooligans. Let’s make sure
we and the invitees understand and act accordingly.
Before you leave home/office:
1. Dress in black or in a color closer to black.
2. Pack your placard.
3. Bring reusable water bottles (optionally a few extras for others who might need it).
4. Bring sweets to share with others (again think green and avoid plastic/polythene wrapped
snacks).
5. Be ready for power cuts. Make sure your mobile is fully charged.
6. Be prepared for the rain (have a cap, an umbrella depending on the weather situation closer
to the event, and avoid using helmets).
7. Have a snack before coming (be prepared for 3-4 hour stay).
8. Walk or use public transport to come to the venue (there is very limited parking near the
Liberty roundabout and it will be difficult to find parking at that time).
During the protest:
1. This is a peaceful protest. No violence or damage to public property at any cost.
a. You might be insulted or ridiculed or physically attacked (highly unlikely).
b. Be vigilant for anyone who is suspicious and trying to incite violence and distance
yourself and your group from them.
2. Maintain professionalism at all times.
a. No obscene language or words that are insulting to specific groups or genders.
b. No obscene placards or statements.
c. Don’t target anybody, personally.
d. Focus on establishing political stability, a corruption free and transparent governance
and the right policy reforms to build this country and the IT industry.
3. Focus the slogans only to the ones agreed (link).
4. Do not block/disturb traffic.
a. Do not step on to the road during the protest and cause traffic congestion.
b. Do not block pavements and cause inconvenience to pedestrians or cause
pedestrians to step on to the road to get past the protest.
5. Take photos, videos and share on social media.
6. This is a protest and not a party.
a. It is not a “big match” and we should avoid giving that impression at all costs.
b. No alcohol!
i. Do not come if you are drunk.
ii. Do not consume alcohol during the protest.
7. Do not litter the venue.
After the protest:
1. Take back all placards, water bottles, etc that you brought to the venue.
2. Travel or walk-away peacefully.
3. Clean the venue. Leave Liberty Junction as it was before our protest at a bare minimum.
In an emergency (unlikely):
1. Leave the venue safely and quickly towards Vihara Mahadevi park.
2. Avoid moving towards any high security areas.
3. Use a soaked cloth, handkerchief or goggles in an incident of tear gas.
