Turning 40 in Sri Lanka. Would you change careers or double down on a skill you believe in?

I'm approaching 40 and trying to make an important decision about the next phase of my life. I'd appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have changed careers later in life or built successful careers from Sri Lanka.

I have a BSc Special degree in Tourism Management and around eight years of experience in the travel industry, progressing from operational positions to management. My work included travel operations, reservations, business processes, and involvement in internal systems and online platform projects.

I eventually left the industry and moved into forex trading and Facebook content creation using AI tools.

Trading is still something I believe I can make work. I've spent years learning and developing my approach, and I don't necessarily want to abandon it. However, I haven't achieved the consistency I need to depend on it financially. My Facebook pages have generated views and some income, but that income is unpredictable too.

Currently, I'm unemployed, single, and renting a room. I don't own a home, and I've been living independently for a long time. At nearly 40, I feel the need to build a much stronger financial foundation.

My immediate goal is to find a job paying at least LKR 200,000 per month, or a remote opportunity that can eventually generate around $1,000 per month.

The reason isn't that I want to give up on trading. I want stable income to cover my living expenses so I can approach trading without the pressure of needing every trade to pay my bills.

At the same time, I know I can't spend the next several years experimenting with random skills or chasing opportunities that never translate into income.

If you were in my position, what would you do?

Would you leverage previous management experience to pursue remote operations, project coordination, implementation, or customer success roles? Would you invest time in learning a technical skill like CRM systems, business automation, or data analytics? Or would you take a completely different route?

I'd especially appreciate advice from people who have actually secured remote jobs, hired people, changed careers after 35, or built a reliable income from Sri Lanka.

What specific path would you choose, how would you get your first opportunity, and how realistic is my income target?

I'm looking for practical experience and honest criticism, not motivation or generic advice about following your passion.

Trying to do too many things will end up doing everything half baked and achieving nothing significant (for most people).
First try to fully focus on an income path that have realistic chance of making necessary "maintenance income" for monthly living. (You may branch-out your existing skill set so that it gives a freelance or remote income).
Probably I'd fully focus for 3-months on this. Use every working time to work on this. Use the rest of the time to think about this. You will most likely come out with some ideas.

ONLY after you achieved the above goal, setup a schedule for trading. (For practice + learning). Do this also for about two months, then you may try something new again like FB or something else.

    bump.
    why did you giveup tourism?
you can go back to tourism.
The tourism industry feels saturated, especially in day-to-day operations, where salaries often don't reflect the workload or experience required. I don't want to return to the same type of operational role and end up in the same position financially.

I'm more interested in moving towards Business Analyst, Operations Specialist, or Product Specialist roles, where I can build on my experience in management, business processes, and online platform development while developing more valuable skills.

My challenge is identifying which direction offers the best combination of realistic entry opportunities, long-term earning potential, and a skill set I can build on.

Thanks for putting it that way.

මම උනානන් ආපහු tourism වලට බහිනව. Tourism is blooming in Sri Lanka නෙහ්.
