Sinhalu my idea for developing tourism ,we should encourage tiny island nations around us to vist SL even nw likes of Maldivian favorite destination for shopping, medical needs n education they prefer SL ne wht abt we build a budget airline link with other island nationsuch as Mauritius,Seychelles n Madagascar…since all above island nation’s purchasing power is higher

If we’re to pull like 1 million tourists frm above islands to SL we could generate at least one billion (assuming they would spend USD 1000 per tour) obviously they would spend more since they come for shopping, medical needs etc.

All we need is a budget airline linking those islands

Medical Tourism is the best way to solve all the problems.

Its already in operation and thriving. Here is an example.

What we need is really UL to offer promotional fares. Take a look at Singapore. SQ will give you vouchers when you fly with them to spend at the Singapore airport. Singapore Tourism board used to offer hotel stay vouchers. You get people in, they will spend money. Over the years I did receive many and break journey in Singapore.

Pre Covid days, I normally transit via SIN at least 4 times a year, sometimes more. Just check the passenger numbers transiting through Changi on a given day. They have a display indicating the transit count per day which usually averages > 300,000 a day. Many of them travel to cheaper destinations via SIN, only a very few visit SL.
We have a Tourist Board that does nothing to promote tourism. Like the Government these institutions are again run by morons. All they care is to earn a buck for themselves.
Fixing high prices for hotel rooms is not the answer. Set reasonable prices and offer packaged holidays. Attract numbers. Our Embassy could promote SL. Advertising can.

PS: These days even SIN is deserted. I travelled thr' Changi very recently and they are still running in a crippled mode.

There is a much more better alternative than attracting high numbers and now its generating foreign currency as we speak in unsanctionable way. 😎

True the issue is policy makers r in deep slumber ..for ages aviation sector has requested frm de gov to lower de landing dues so more airlines would consider SL as a destination for transit, refuel etc but gov is keeping numb..

I mean Sri Lanka has potential to enhance at least USD 15 billion by jst twisting our policies a bit

Was Mihin running at a profit? Imagine you starting up a shop. You never had any funds. No initial investment capital. From the setting up of the business, all equipment from shelving to the fridges and the goods you sell are on loan. You got to pay the staff. Even though you may have a small operational profit on the sale of the goods, when you take into account the whole set up , obviously you got to lose. The same with Airlanka. :P

PS: I agree with you on the last point. When you appoint morons like Shiranthi's brother who knows noting about running an airline - other than that aircraft are supposed to fly - what else to expect?
A while ago I had a look at UL financial reports. They were doing well during the pandemic. No other airlines to compete with and they did make some profit.
