Ladies and gentlemen of Elakiri, I have been looking to financially aid one (or a few) students who are struggling with their education or higher education due to financial difficulties. I have been keen on this for a few years. However, it's extremely difficult to find genuine people 😔 even though I know there are many such students in Sri Lanka (I was in that group several years ago). I would appreciate it if any of you can point me to someone or share your thoughts.
I know there are enough poor families struggling to feed their children, but that's not the focus of this post.

You can do this though a school, few of my friends received such aid for 2 years I guess, selection was done by school teachers. Or thru non charity org, we did such thing thru Leo club few years ago

I would suggest finding this through a connection like someone who is already in the academic / education field because it is tough to find someone from a person in an online community or else there are organizations like Uni Alumni and other associations which help school or uni students. You can contact them as well.

IDK maybe books are important for Piriwena type of education. But in schools or even universities, almost no one uses libraries for academic purposes.

    මේ සමෘද්ධි ක්‍රමය දිගටම ප්‍රමෝට් කරන එක වැරදියි

just go and ask from few of mass tuition class teachers. There should be lads who performed well in A/Ls but lack of funds have to educate academics...

Thank you for all the replies, critiques, and bumps! I really appreciate it!

I agree that the title could be too strict. However, my intention is to offer a helping hand to a genuinely dedicated student who is facing financial difficulties while striving to improve their life through education. I don't expect anything in return, and I don't mind if the student fails as long as they have put in a sincere effort. If possible, I would even remain anonymous.

This is my personal belief, but I strongly believe that assisting one person who is genuinely struggling to succeed is far more valuable than helping a ton of people who do not care about their future. If I had the capacity, I would certainly help everyone, but I would prioritize those who are already fighting even with limited resources.

Very good move indeed. There are so many ways. Contact schools in remote areas or your friends working in these areas. I have been doing this over decades. I sponsor school children and also needy Med students & Engineering students. Mostly I never hear from them later once they pass out and I don't expect them to do so either. I make it very clear to them at the start about it. I only request the Uni students to carry forward this once they get employed. At least support one student on their own.
Most Med students once they reach the final year call me to say that they do not need funds as they have means to support themselves at that stage. My wife always donates a good stethoscope once the Med student reaches the third year.
Sometimes we get a NewYear card from some, but I should mention that one particular person visits my place quite often with his family whether I am there or not and spends a day with my mother.

Sometimes there are sad endings... Always things do not work out right. Maybe write about this later on a different thread. But in most cases the outcome is positive.

Firstly, I want to commend your noble intention to support struggling students. It's a wonderful initiative, and I completely understand your desire to make a meaningful impact.

However, I'd like to share a suggestion that might be more sustainable and effective in the long run. Instead of selecting specific students and forming ongoing relationships, consider a more diversified approach. Here's why:

Minimizing Dependency: By donating to a single student or a few students and committing to monthly support, there's a risk of creating a dependency on your assistance. If for any reason, you're unable to continue the support, it could lead to disappointment and stress for the students and their families.

Performance Pressure: Students who receive ongoing support might feel pressured to perform exceptionally well academically to justify your continued assistance. This can add unnecessary stress to their education and personal lives.

Fair Distribution: To reach a broader audience of deserving students, it might be more equitable to donate to multiple places, like different schools in rural areas, each year. This way, you can help a larger number of students without forming long-term bonds.

Empowering Communities: By periodically selecting different schools or students, you empower communities as a whole. Your contributions can make a significant difference in various areas, enabling more students to access education.

So, I propose the idea of selecting 1 to 10 different places or schools each year and making a one-time donation to each of them. This approach can maximize your impact while avoiding the potential pitfalls of long-term commitments. It also ensures that your support reaches a wider range of deserving students and communities.

Your generosity will undoubtedly make a positive difference in the lives of many students, and this approach can help you achieve that goal more effectively.

Is this valid for foreign education as well? If you are serious, let me know so I can apply this year as well. I was selected for a Scandinavian University for but couldn't proceed due to financial difficulties.
