Personally I think the since there might be a change in govt soon, it made some top kingpin nervous - a few drug lords will be killed off taking their secrets with them to the grave. For the last three decades, Sri Lanka has been turned in to a top drug smuggling and money laundering destination with the backing of politicians. Now that there is a big chance a change is coming soon, these politicos are possibly trying to cover up their tracks.
