If you buy from apple directly they will activate the warranty on the purchase date even if you are not open the box. Only 3rd party seller apple products have their warranty activate on the day you first use the device.

I know this because I got one Macbook from UK John Lewis and one from Apple directly same day. One from Apple store got its warranty activated on the purchase day and other one after I first use the device couple of days later .
