First CC in 2007 after moving to UK as a student. Credit limit £300 (52%APR ) very high interest rate card but got that to pay on time and build credit history.
Then in 2011 applied for proper CC through my bank (HSBC UK). Got approved for £2500 (21%APR). I'm using that card ever since and now my credit limit is £44000 (17%APR).
Credit cards are really useful if you know how to use your card wisely.

My HSBC Premier CC already have 9 months interest free on purchases and 18 months interest free on balance transfers (17% is the general rate for the card). Around Christmas time they always give 24m interest free on purchase option. 2 years ago I paid for my Kitchen refurbishment using that option and paid off last June.If you have a good credit history, you should be able to get a 0% card in the UK easily. In UK, customer loyalty is penalised not rewarded.
What I've done:
I'm maintaining the Santander for purchases and other two for rewards.
- Santander 0% for 23 months - (previously switched from Sainsburys 0% for 18-months and next switch to Natwest or Virgin Money 0% in 2026. - This card is for purchases. Limit £14,000
- Lloyds World Elite Mastercard (22.9%) but comes with unlimited priority pass airport lounge access. I always maintain near-zero balance on this card. Limit is £11,000 has a fee of £180pa.
- Amex Preferred Rewards Gold (30.7%) - has a number of perks including cashback for air tickets and other purchases. Also generates points which can be transferred to airmiles. I have a £15,000 limit but with a fee of £195.
