Iran government and Iran public are two different entities that we should deal with accordingly. USA didn't declare war or public of Iran, just the corrupt government. Sri Lanka is temporarily taking custody of the warship. It's allowed under international law.

It's actually a major diplomatic achievement by Sri Lanka. If the US attacks the ship now, it implies they are attacking Sri Lanka not Iran, which would be a serious breach of international law.

Technically its a Sri Lankan ship now because they surrendered the ship to Sri Lanka. Its all technical but there's a difference under international law.

Although I suspect that Sri Lankan government would have unofficially taken permission from the US Embassy in Colombo.
