    Hey bois,

This one really fucking hurts to post. :(

As Head of Engineering I had to be part of the decision to let go 20 of our senior engineers today. Backend and frontend, proper seniors with 8–15+ years experience. These aren’t just names on a list..... these are people I’ve worked side-by-side with for years. They were all crushing it, no performance issues whatsoever. Zero.

It was 100% because of the brutal economic shitstorm in Australia right now. Rising costs, projects getting slashed, cash getting tight… we held on as long as we possibly could but we ran out of runway.

I feel sick about it. These guys carried us through so much.

This industry can be brutal sometimes....

honestly i am starting to believe that it is a scam. everywhere you go and many countries you go it is always the same. lowering cost and making profits always the same song. i wonder when will they rest...ZERO COST ! maybe. always economy is bad or times are hard. I once asked a old guy when were the times good? he said it was always like this and the people at the top always make money reagrdless of what we do....

I get it 100%. That "always the same story, people at the top always win' feeling is real and I've felt it myself plenty of times. This wasn't about "lowering costs to boost profits" or padding anyone's bonus. We've been burning cash for months, projects getting cancelled left and right, and we literally ran out of runway. We delayed this layoff as long as we could because none of us wanted it.

Modern day slavery. It gets worst for the average joe.At the end we have the fiduciary duty to the shareholders.
In a way it's good.only people who has the passion for it will survive.

Appreciate the honest take mchn. Shit's heavy right now.The "only the passionate survive" bit… I kinda agree in theory, but a lot of the 20 seniors we just let go were passionate as hell. They weren't coasting. Sometimes it's just brutal timing and bad luck, not lack of passion.
