You’re mixing up correlation, class prejudice, and bad policy into one argument and calling it “100 reasons.”

Using the United States as your example actually weakens your point. The US didn’t become developed because education is expensive. It became developed because it invested massively in public education, research universities, and access. Even today, public schools and state universities are a huge part of that system. High fees are widely criticized for creating inequality, not praised as a success model. (e.g., the Sugar-Daddy concept became more and more famous because students couldn't afford the university fees)

And let’s be real about consequences. When education becomes unaffordable, people don’t magically “stay in their place”.they struggle. You even see extreme cases where students fall into exploitative situations just to fund their studies. So what’s your answer to that? What happens to capable students who don’t have money? Do they just give up? That’s not a system, that’s exclusion.

Ragging isn’t caused by free education. It’s caused by weak enforcement, toxic university culture, and poor administration. Blaming “village students” is just lazy scapegoating.

And this idea that only wealthy, English-speaking students should be educated? That’s not “capitalism.” That’s just elitism(ප්‍රභූවාදය) dressed up with buzzwords like Adam Smith. Even Smith argued that education should be accessible because an uneducated population weakens a nation.

    What you’re proposing would:

Kill social mobility(Blocking people from moving up in society)
Killing diversity(Reducing the mix of people (backgrounds, cultures, classes, perspectives))
    Shrink the skilled workforce
Lock the country into permanent inequality

Sri Lanka’s free education system produced generations of professionals from every background. Remove that, and you don’t get a “better class”, then you get a smaller, weaker country run by a tiny privileged circle.

And this obsession with “class” and “villages” says more about your mindset than reality. Talent isn’t born in Colombo alone, but it’s everywhere. Education is what unlocks it.

If you actually care about fixing things, talk about discipline, accountability, and quality in universities, but not excluding people because they’re not rich enough for your comfort.
ok bro. Sorry. I had used some short minded & really bad vocabulary in this case. Sorry, its my fault. Apologies. I have to agree with you mostly.
But still, I have to say with all due respect, the free education system had made things go out of control. I am not a fan of free things. People need to earn everything. when things are free, there is NO value behind it.Specially the education. About USA, the country is wel developed not because of the state edu system, but the innovative people coming from paid unis like Stanford, Princeton, Harvard, etc. All these state unis are a cancer even to the US economy. That's why Trump is trying to cut down funding there. Who are going to those: just those black homeless community. Its the damn truth. So we need to agree on this, US is developed because it has a great innovative startup culture related to the paid Uni system. There also state funded community colleges are a failed system with more shootings + drugs from low class Niggas.

I appreciate the apology. And I respect your willingness to engage honestly. But some of the points you’re making still don’t hold up when we look at them properly. The idea that “free things have no value” sounds good on the surface, but it’s not really true. Air is free. Public roads are free. Basic healthcare and education in many countries are publicly funded. Their value doesn’t come from a price tag, but it comes from how essential they are and what people do with them. Education is the same. Its value comes from effort, discipline, and outcomes, but not from whether someone paid to enter. Also, think about fairness for a second. If someone is born into a poor family, does that mean they should automatically be locked out of education? That’s not “earning”, that’s just being filtered out before you even get a chance. For example, if you were born into a poor family, would this comment exist today? No right. In the case of the United States, yes, places like Harvard University, Stanford University, and Princeton University produce innovation. No one denies that. But those institutions do not exist in isolation. They sit at the top of a system that includes massive government funding for research, strong public schooling, and state universities and community colleges to provide talent. Even in Sri Lanka, students who play sports well, score well in the Grade 5 exam, and pass the O-level get into the best schools in Colombo. But those poor schools should be closed? You can’t just pick the high scores and ignore the ground beneath them. And calling public universities or community colleges a “failure” just isn’t accurate. In reality, they educate millions of people, supply the workforce, and support economic growth. Most engineers, nurses, teachers, and even a large number of researchers don’t come from elite private universities. For example, when u admit to a hospital due to an emergency situation, would you ask the doctor which university he comes from? In Sri Lanka, your concern about things “going out of control” is valid, but the cause isn’t free education itself. The real issues are weak discipline and enforcement, poor university management, lack of accountability, and uneven quality across institutions. Blaming access instead of fixing these problems is like blaming roads for accidents. Also, linking crime, drugs, or violence to income level or background is not a good solution. Problems like that exist across all social classes. We call them white-collar thieves. Reducing it to “low-class people” is not only unfair, but it also prevents real solutions. because when there is such a mindset, people tend to suspect poor people instead of paying attention to the real points. And about Donald Trump, sorry to say this, this point made me laugh. because Donald Trump has become a Joke to the entire world. I have a few team members from USA(Natives). They also voted for Trump, but now they regret their decision. His attempts to cut education funding have been widely criticized by economists and educators because they weaken long-term innovation and research capacity. Strong countries invest more in education, not less. At the end of the day, do we want a system that gives opportunity to "all capable people", or only to those who can afford it? Because if we limit education to money, we don’t create a better society. We just waste talent and lock inequality in place. If we really want progress, the focus should be on improving quality, discipline, and accountability, not shutting the door on people before they even get a chance.

This is the 100% real reason I'm saying since my school days that "WE DO NOT NEED FREE EDUCATION IN SRI LANKA" People need to pay for school & university. Then only the families who can afford education will get it. Then automatically these stinky idiots will stay in their stinky villages & help SL to get more rice from paddy fields or those big big farm lands in the Jungle. These real Adu kule poor buggers can't be fixed even if they learn how to count or read. Free education is the biggest disaster SL politicians did to SL. Open for comments....

I can agree with you in 1 way, but I see the issues in more than 100 ways. With all due respect, I can sayy yes the so called free education has done more damage to us than the benefits. Look at USA. As far as I know most of the schools are not fully free. Are they under developed ? 100000 times developed than SL. Free education let the stupid idiots from those villages to come to the state Universitries & start ragging to kill innocent students. This is a result from the free education. Have you ever seren a student from Royal College - Colombo got caught in ragging in any university. Maybe possible for those who come to the school since 2:00 in the morning travelling 100km per day. This is why I say class or living standards can't be bought. They are there for a reason. You are open for your comments. Feel free. If the education is fully paid & only in English, more opportunities will open for the people who can afford. Then automatically those who are farmers & janitors will do their jobs. we just need the real capitalistic system. Exactly what Adam Smith introduced.

ok bro. Sorry. I had used some short minded & really bad vocabulary in this case. Sorry, its my fault. Apologies. I have to agree with you mostly.

Dude, a language is not a measure of IQ or class. Sri Lanka, being a British colony, had most people studying in English until fucking Banda made Sinhala the official language. Since then, everything changed and many things went wrong. Those who were privileged began to think that having education in English language is a classy thing, but it’s not. Attitude is what makes a person classy. Yes learning in English is easy and lead to lots of opportunities.

However, I agree with you that everything should have value and must be earned. If everything is given freely, its value will be lost.

Proficiency in English should not be considered a measure of social class.

Sorry for interrupting your arguments in between. This is just my opinion

Bro, you can always enter a thread & express your opinion. We are having this conversation here to discuss. Anyone really participating into a discussion without using bad words is always welcomed. I have to say, I never said English speaking community can be considered high IQ or class. I told it opens more opportunities. Look at the current Gov in SL now. As I heard those people have made all the issues for a better education system in SL. Look at them now. They can't even have a proper conversation with international media just to express a basic idea.A group of stupid JVP guys who are sufferring from their own mistakes. (By the way, its a total new topic: I still do believe Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe is the best president for SL). Please don't misunderstand, I never said English speaking ppl have a high IQ. It only opens more opportunities.

    Hi,
You are always welcome. Yes I'm only trying to express what I feel about the situation ongoing in SL. Its just my personal idea & everyone can comment & express their ideas. We are having a friendly conversation hier. Basic healthcare is not actually free in many countries. It just looks like free on the surface, but citizens contribute to the healthcare by paying a tax. For example, in Germany where I'm living we pay around 40% tax. This tax is being used to fund the education & healthcare. No matter how much you earn, you need to pay the tax. That's how we are getting this so called free public healthcare. Its the sdame in every EU country as I know. In SL, ppl get all free with 0 tax & now they don't wanna pay a tax. Only the high earning ppl maintaining the so called poor ppl in SL. Again, what is the use of giving more than 10+ years free education to a person if they come out of these free systems & ask for more free money & benefits to live ? Those so called unpriviledge guys who always do a Art or some Sinhala language degree & become a graduate & then beg for more money on the street. Is this what we need to spend money for ? feed these idiots with all the scholarships & free money, let them identrified as educated with some useless Art degree , then jump on the roads & ask for jobs & more money. SL could use this money to develop better roads & build a better airport :p Think carefully, when a man get free education & free healthcare for around 10+ years & still he or she can't find a way to support the life alone. Fight with the society for free things & more money. Is this man worthy of being alive ? This is exactly what Adolf Hitler did. Killing the dumb & disabled. He is exactly correct. These people are only consuming food & breathing air for nothing, then shitting, sleeping & havinbg sex. What can they do. can u please tell me 1 thing SL can get from these free money (Aswasuma ) people? These people (all of these ) had free state schooling I think. What a lost ? Can u imagine ? Think with brain, not with heart my bro. How nice if all the state school money were put into tech development in SL. Just imagine how much. Billions & Billions. Thios is my logic. And one more thing, I'm not from an elite rich family. As I heard my grandpa came to Colombo from Kandy. APoor guy, he started a as a helper in CEB & then ended as one of the biggest material suppliers & contracters suppliers to CEB. This is how people develop. From Helper to a businessman. I only follow my humble beginning & just following their path.
