A 14-year-old student studying at a leading girls’ school in Colombo 07, who attempted suicide by hanging herself inside a college toilet had a narrow escape and was hospitalized in a critical condition.
The incident had occurred around 10 am yesterday when the victim along with three other students were found by the school prefects having mobile phones inside the classroom.
The students were reportedly warned by the prefects and were summoned to the Principal’s office when one of the students had insisted on going to the toilet. The teachers and the prefects became alarmed when the student had not returned after 20 minutes.
The teachers broke open the toilet door with the aid of the college labourers to find the student hanging herself from her school tie attached to a fanlight grill. She was immediately brought down, rushed to a nearby private hospital, and was admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
According to hospital sources the victim is being connected to the life support machine as her condition was known to be highly critical. Her status was unstable at the time this edition went to press last night.
Police Spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara told Daily Mirror that a special police team had been deployed to investigate the case and record statements from the school staff.
One of the fellow students who witnessed the victim hanging inside the lavatory was also hospitalized with a chest pain generated due to the shock and a teacher as well as another assistant had fainted at the same time, college sources said.
The year nine student was reportedly the only child of her family.
