The tech deal of the decade has finally been sealed. After 18 months of circling one another, Microsoft and Yahoo! have teamed up to tackle Google's apparently unshakeable dominance of the online search and advertising market.
Negotiations between the two were no doubt explosive. Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's chief executive, is known for his wild expostulations while Yahoo!'s Carol Bartz delights journalists with her expletive-peppered press conferences. We can only imagine what the pair were like behind closed doors.
Whatever sparks flew when thrashing out a deal, it was clear that both parties needed one. Neither was succeeding in search, apparently regardless of the amount of money they threw at it.
