at least, ppl who cheat on their lovers, may know that they can be legally punished.

for both men and women

What kind of a law is this? Now you can get sued for breaking up? This is ridicules. I'm not saying what the girl did was right.. But they were not married and didn't have a legal binding. If the guy was truly in it for the love then he wouldn't have sued for 5mil.
This is not justice....its utter nonsense.![]()
well then you say let the girl get away with all those jewelry which the boy would have got her using all his savings and all?? isnt this also kind of a theft??
There are three things to consider hereLater they had made arrangements to get married and Prasanna had bought jewellry worth Rs.50,000 to give as a gift to his girl friend.

There are three things to consider here
1. It says give as a gift, but it doesn't say that he has actually given it. Seems to me like he just bought the jewelery but has NOT yet given. if that is the case then he can just sell them back, right ? Maybe he might not get the full amount but still its not a total loss.
2. the next thing is, even if he has already given her the jewelery it was intended as a gift. There is a difference between loaning or lending someone something and giving a gift. A gift is something that you give without expecting anything in return. Ok just assume that you've been friends with some one (not necessarily a BF or a GF, just any friend), and usually friends do favors and give gifts to each other, right ??. and then for some reason you two stopped being friends, then do you ask compensation for all the things you did/gave while you were friends??
3. People break up all the time, its not a very strange thing. But the guy suing for 5 million is strange. One might argue that this was the plan of that guy from the beginning. Who knows, if the girl is from a rich family this guy might have planed the whole thing. Just so that he can file a law suite and get money. People have done much more bizarre things for money and law suits.
In this I think that girl is the real victim....
well u can never say. im not saying wat ur saying is wrong bro. but who knows.
and as for ur 3rd point. dude, i dont think n e girl from a rich family in sri lanka specially in da villages will go abroad to a middle east country to work in a bloody garment factory men! and u think the bugger wud hav planned it for so many years?? u think ppl r so jobless?
and also bro. imagine ur from a lower middle class family who has gone abroad to work and earn money so that u can feed ur family and also settle down in your life. and in the process u find a girl, propose to her and all is set for the marriage to happen and you spend all your savings on the wedding and its arrangements and then the girl says "i dont want to marry you" and goes away keeping for herself all the stuff given to her by the boy for the marriage which is worth thousands and also his savings!! u think any person with a sensible mind will just look at all this at just wait??
and also lets just say this girl who took these jewelry and stuff, and goes away and after sometime marries another person and lives happily with the stuff given by her ex BF. how fair is that ah?? will u ever just watch and wait if ur GF did that?
Your argument is valid too.. That 3rd scenario is bit unrealistic, I agree. But I’ve heard so many stories (outside SL) where people have planned for years to deceive or even to kill someone they pretended to love, for money (insurance claims and law suits). So it is not completely unthinkable either. But you have a point, a girl from a rich background will not go to Middle East to work.
Personally I don't think these issues should be taken to court at all. Ok, maybe asking a reasonable amount like 100,000 or 200,000 as damages for emotional distress is agreeable. But suing for 5 million is way out of line. What about the girls life ? Is that fair for her ? Does she have to suffer her whole life for dumping one guy ?? 5 million, seriously ??
