Anarkali, who is constantly facing death threats from fellow UPFA candidate and Presidential Coordinator, Sajin Vaas Gunawardena, was also threatened by another UPFA candidate, Nishantha Muthuhettigama in Samudra Mawatha, Galle on the 14th. She had lodged a complaint with the Galle police on the same day and Nishamntha Muthuhettigama has been requested to appear before court on the 18th. Sajin Vaas Gunawardena and Nishantha Muthuhettigama have launched a massive battle to win preferential votes to secure the post of Chief Minister in the Council and they are both closely associated with the President. The two candidates have been at loggerheads and Nishantha had even abducted one of Sajin’s supporters, who was later released following a request made by the President. They were summoned by the President to Temple Trees and managed to resolve the matter without taking it before court.
Although Nishantha Muthuhettigama is not related to the President, he is related to the President’s private secretary, Godawatte. During the late Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s tenure as the Opposition Leader, Godawatte was the chief clerk at the Opposition Leader’s Office and in 1994 became the private secretary to Mahinda Rajapakse, who at the time was the Labour Minister. He was made the private secretary on Basil Rajapakse’s advice.
Godawatte, who has bee a loyal aide to the President since 1994 is now the private secretary to the President in the Finance Ministry. Nishantha Muthuhettigama is now using Godawatte’s powers in his election campaign. Basil Rajapakse, who is currently annoyed with Sajin Vaas, is also supporting Nishantha Muthuhettigama.
It is only the JHU that has come forward to help Anarkali who is being attacked by the President’s friends and relatives. The JHU supports Anarkali since the party’s chief financier, Nahil Wijesuriya, is her uncle.
