The upcoming Southern Provincial Council poll is the most violated election in Sri Lanka's recent history, independent election monitors said.
According to the election monitors a total of 227 incidents has been reported in the Southern PC since the first day of accepting of nominations.
The most number of complaints have been received against the misuse of state properties by the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) candidates and its supporters, said Uditha Gunasekara, the Chief Executive of the Network of Election Monitoring at a press conference held today in Colombo.
NEM said by the end of the pre-election process of the Southern PC election which ended midnight Wednesday, the election violence has been increased to a significantly high level, an 85 percent rise compared to the Uva PC election.
According to its sources 64 election propaganda offices of various political parties were set on fire by unidentified groups during the same period.
The most number of violence incidents have been reported from Hambantota, the district represented by the country's President, with 108 incidents, election monitors said. Matara district had 71 incidents while another 48 reported from Galle district.
Out of the total number of 227 complaints, most number of complaints has been received against the ruling party candidates and its supporters, Gunasekara confirmed.
Meanwhile the police department has already deployed 7,000 policemen to the Southern Province to strengthen the security during the upcoming polls.
The Southern PC election is to be held on next Saturday, 10th of October to select 55 councilors for a next four-year term.
