The rift between Minister Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman and Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan continues to deepen with Mr. Muralitharan calling for Mr. Chandrakanthan’s removal from his post of CM.
The National Integration Minister told Daily Mirror ‘Hot Seat’ yesterday that in his opinion somebody like incumbent Batticaloa Mayor Sivageetha Prabhakaran was more suitable to be appointed to the post of EP Chief Minister.
Mr. Muralitharan accused Mr. Chandrakanthan of misleading and misguiding some influential people behind the scenes to get him subsequently appointed as the Eastern Province Chief Minister, a move which Mr. Muralitharan admits to have initially supported but now has second thoughts about. “After assuming office Mr. Chandrakanthan did a lot of bad things in those areas. We had a good chance of developing those areas if he coordinated with us. He wants police powers for the East. Why does he need that? If he asked for funds to develop those areas which were once under LTTE control, the President may agree and provide the funds,” Mr. Muralitharan said.
He also accused the Chief Minister of spreading racism among the Tamil community in the EP and added that the government was now not keen on working with the Chandrakanthan administration until drastically changed the way he thought and operated.
“I openly say that we have to select a proper person for the post of Chief Minister. It has to be an educated person with good leadership qualities. When you compare him with the other Chief Ministers you find that the others are well educated and well accepted in their communities,” Mr. Muralitharan said.
When he was again asked who he feels was the most suitable for the CM post, Mr. Mrualitharan said there were many including the incumbent Batticaloa Mayor who could be brought in to replace the present CM.
We failed in our repeated attempts to reach Mr. Chandrakanthan for a comment on the views expressed. (See the full interview on page 10)
