Yes I too agree with your views malli, any body is free to do experimental music, new styles, variety of genres, as u say, but do so with your own original creations. Any one who has originality, creativity, & his own identity in his brand of music, does not need to do his experiments with other people's songs. Certainly not with the immortal beauties of Jothipala. It is indeed a heartening feeling that the new generation appreciates the songs of this legacy who died 22 yrs. ago. But distorting these old songs is not the way "to take Sri Lankan music to the next level." Those who have nothing new to offer Sri Lankan music, will cling on to Jothi for another 25 yrs. with their trials & errors , gleefully destroying these songs. This is the sad thing.
My humble appeal to every one is, enjoy Jothi's songs by all means, ( I mean how can any one not enjoy his songs ?) but please please do not distort them.

Again, no offence to any one personally. Particularly KK. He is a little genious & the best of this decade. The way forward for him is not experimenting with Jothi songs. Why should he ? He has proved himself with his own stuff.

You have an amazing voice too. Best of luck with your new creations & new styled music.

I understand your point of view. We are talking about two different levels of singing I think. Every singer/musician has a period where they fiddle with others' creations. I'm sure Jothi sang other singers' songs before he sang his own song. The first song he ever sang was not his own song. I made this cover because I'm not up to the standard of creating my own melody and singing my own song yet.

Even if one day I reach that level and sing my own song, why can't I sing Jothi's songs and enjoy? Is listening to originals the only way to enjoy Jothi's songs? Why can't somebody sing and enjoy? why can't somebody play and enjoy or read and enjoy?

All I did was to create a cover, and to share it with my friends and an online community who I believe admires similar music as I do. The sole purpose of this cover was to get feedback on my effort. Is that considered as "distorting"? If that is the case, I can't sing a Jothi's song with my friends with the guitar in my hand on a Saturday night, because it is not going to be as good as Jothi's original and hence I would be committing the crime of "distorting" his music. In that case I can't sing anybody's song because the chances are that I'm not going to be as good as any professional singer.

The only difference here to a saturday night is that instead of singing live, I recorded and shared a link.

I did not release this song in an album. I did not get radio and tv channels to play this. I didn't even force my friends to listen. All I did was to send the link and whoever is interested can listen and comment.

About KK, as far as I know the only time he sang this song was in a concert held to celebrate Jothi's extraordinary talent. He was invited and asked to sing this song for an audience that loved Jothi. He accepted and sang for the delight of many Jothi fans. He did not use this song to win the hearts of Jothi fans and create a name for himself. Just like you said he has proved himself with his own talent over and over again.
