General Sarath Fonseka confirmed for the first time that he would contest the Presidential elections scheduled to be held on January 26 next year, thus ending a long spell of speculation.
The retired Chief of Defence Staff and former Army Commander said that he would be a candidate for the polls while he was addressing a lawyers’ seminar in Colombothis evening.
General Fonseka is to hold a media briefing on Sunday where he is to outline his future campaign regarding the polls. He said during the seminar that he would abolish the Executive Presidency in the event of being elected and would consider further details depending on the mandate.
