I had the same fate So I thought of helping you with my experience. She was 4+months older than me(I was SEP she was MAY) So her parents opposed( There was this caste problem also).
She said the same things your ex said and I tried all the things you did. That was 6 years ago.
But she went away. She also said that she needs freedom to love and cant carry-on the affair in a clandestine manner.
I tried tried and tried. But she didn't even wanted to speak to me.
I cried for many years and suffered a lot coz there was no life to me than her.
But meanwhile my friends were with me as a wall protecting me.. Just like EK family is with you now.
Also I hardened up my mind and did my A/L's for the second time(First time I screwed up.. and you knw yand she might have thought that there's no use to her coz I couldn't enter the intended uni at the first time coz she got 3A's first time. She did commerce and I did Maths)
I was able to enter UoM.
Today I'm in a very good position and I got a GF who is 1000 times better than her( Who was with me in ups and downs)
The fate made my ex-gf to pay dearly in the meanwhile. Everything she did went wrong and upside down there after( I don't like to say how)
Machan finally what I have to say is "FIND SOME ONE WHO REALLY LOVES YOU AND NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND"
