In a series of defeats of budgets of local government bodies, on Tuesday the budget of the Dehiattakandiya Pradeshiya Sabha was defeated by 05 votes, PS sources said.
When the Budget was presented for approval, it was defeated by 05 votes with opposition UNP members and JVP members voting against the budget.
When the budget was presented UPFA Pradeshiya Sabha Member Patrick Jayasinghe stated that the budget report had certain deficiencies and proposed that it should be presented again next month after making necessary changes. Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha speaking at the meeting pointed out that the budget report was done after careful scrutiny and participation of all the members of the ruling party and therefore it would not be postponed. D.M.Gunaratne and Sudath Devapriya voted for the Chairman’s proposal. Eight members (08) including the Leader of the Opposition ,Thilak Kariyawasam of UNP, J.B.Randeniya and Susantha Yasaratne of JVP voted against.
Commenting on the incident, the Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha K.G.Wijeratne said that the causes for the defeat were the efforts by a group of ruling party members who wanted to put the ruling UPFA government into difficulty.
