Clinton: Too soon to estimate casualties in Haiti

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday the United States and the world must do everything possible to help Haiti surmount its "cycle of hope and despair."

Appearing on morning network news shows after cutting short an overseas trip, Clinton said it's still too early to make a firm estimate of the number of deaths in the wake of Tuesday's devastating, 7.0 magnitude earthquake. But she said officials know that approximately 3 million people, including 45,000 Americans, have been affected and that "tens of thousands, we fear, are dead."

Up to 200 UN staff still missing after Haiti quake

Up to 200 United Nations' staff in Haiti, including peacekeepers, remain unaccounted for after its headquarters and other buildings collapsed in a devastating earthquake, a U.N. spokeswoman said on Thursday.

"Between 50 to 100 MINUSTAH (peacekeeping) staff are believed trapped in the building. In total, between 115 and 200 are unaccounted for, but it is an estimate from last night," Elisabeth Byrs, spokeswoman of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told Reuters.

50000 dead in Haiti, says Red Cross

The Red Cross federation says it estimates there have been 45,000-50,000 deaths in the Haitian earthquake.

Spokesman Jean-Luc Martinage said the Haitian Red Cross came up with the estimate based on information from a wide network of volunteers across the quake-stricken capital of Port-au-Prince.

Haiti sees 140,000 dead, fears violence / 40,000 bodies buried

Haitian authorities have buried 40,000 bodies and believe another 100,000 people probably died in this week's earthquake, a senior official told Reuters on Friday.

Aramick Louis, secretary of state for public safety, also said that gangs were starting to take to the streets and the government's main fear was a flare-up of violence.
