Sri Lankans living in Canada staged a mammoth demonstration today (12th February) in front of Sri Lanka High Commission office in Ottawa.

This protest was organized by the “Campaign for Democracy in Sri Lanka- Canada” to protest against the illegal and politically motivated arrest of the (RTRD) General Sarath Fonseka who was the main opposition’s political candidate of the last month’s presidential election and dictatorial Rajapksa family. (RTRD) General Sarath Fonseka polled over 40% of the popular vote, many considered as a blatantly rigged election by the ruling family of Sri Lanka.

The protest was well attended by all major ethnic groups in Sri Lanka. This was despite few henchmen of ruling family living in Toronto sending threatening emails to people not to participate in the protest. These pathetic people forget that Canada is a country of social justice and no place to try their same disgusted tactics of denying the freedom of speech and human rights by threatening and harassing the people who express their conscience.

Everyone was covering their face with a black cloth, which was written “ freedom” on it and showing Sri Lanka national flags, posters and banners such as “Release General Sarath Fonseka Immediately”, “Restore Democracy in Sri Lanka”, “ Presidential election corrupted – DO NOT ACCEPT It” etc. They were also shouting slogans such as “release General”, “no democracy in Sri Lanka”, “no freedom in Sri Lanka” etc.

Also, the participants distributed leaflets to describing the deteriorating social justice in Sri Lanka under the corrupt, dictatorial ruling family in Sri Lanka. Defying the extreme cold weather, the demonstration lasted over two hours.

At the end, a letter was handed over to the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka appealing for the safety and immediate release General Sarath Fonseka and for restoring the democracy in Sri Lanka

Fonseka to 'testify on war crimes'
Sri Lanka's former military commander says that he is prepared to give evidence in an international court on war crime charges against Sri Lanka.
General Sarath Fonseka speaking to journalists in Colombo on Monday said, "I am not going to save anyone who has committed war crimes".
International human rights organisations as well as the US state department has alleged that the Sri Lankan government committed war crimes during the final phase of the war against Tamil Tigers.
Several human rights organisations have called to try the Sri Lankan state in international courts on alleged abuses against civilians and surrendees.
During the presidential election where Gen. Fonseka challenged president Mahinda Rajapaksa, both claimed credit for defeating the LTTE.
"I am definitely going to reveal what I know, what I was told and what I heard. Any one who has committed war crimes should definitely be brought into courts," Gen. Fonseka said.
"Those who reveal the truth are not traitors" he added.

Just think who'd want him released other than tigers?
